The Auto Grid Review

Mahindra XUV400 Review: Our Verdict

3.6/ 5 · Auto Grid Editorial

XUV400s came through Kondapur in healthy numbers through 2024 and 2025, nearly all EL Pro cars in Everest White or Galaxy Grey with the copper-accented dual-tone roof, and the trade has slowed since the XUV 3XO EV launched. The paint is the XUV300-era finish: thicker than the 3XO's and reasonably resistant to swirls, but the copper satin roof and the gloss-black grille insert scratch easily, and the long bonnet collects ORR chips at the leading edge like its donor car. The heavy battery means the lower bumper and sills sit closer to the road than on an XUV300 and they sand-blast on Shamshabad trips. It is a simple car to film with soft, flat panels, and the copper roof is worth protecting because touch-up paint for that satin finish is not available.

What we like

  • +5-star Bharat NCAP with six airbags on the EL Pro
  • +456 km MIDC range from the 39.4 kWh pack and a 7.2 kW on-board charger
  • +Proven, discounted run-out stock in October 2026
  • +Larger than the XUV 3XO EV at 4.2 metres

What we’d change

  • –Only one variant left on the official configurator
  • –Older cabin, no ADAS and no Harman Kardon system against the XUV 3XO EV
  • –Satin copper roof scratches easily and is hard to repair
  • –Resale uncertain once the model is withdrawn

Is the XUV400 right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored

Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.

City Commuter

10–30 km a day through traffic

Single-pedal drive, 310 Nm and a 7.2 kW charger that refills overnight make it a comfortable Hyderabad commuter; it is simply an older design than the 3XO EV.

Highway Cruiser

ORR laps and expressway weekends

The 456 km MIDC rating translates to roughly 300 km on the highway, enough for Vijayawada with one planned stop, though charging is slower than the newer Mahindra EVs.

Family First

Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips

Six airbags, a 5-star BNCAP and ISOFIX are strong, but the boot is smaller than the 3XO EV's and there is no ADAS.

Driving Enthusiast

Cares how it steers, not just how it looks

0–100 km/h in 8.3 seconds was quick for its class, and it remains brisk, but the soft chassis is not built for corners.

First-Car Buyer

Budget-conscious and resale-aware

Festive discounts make the EL Pro a tempting first EV, but a buyer should price the resale risk of a model on its way out.

Chauffeur-Driven Executive

Judged from the rear seat

A compact rear seat, no rear sunblind and a cabin from the XUV300 era mean nobody is chauffeured in an XUV400 by choice.

Weekend Explorer

Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads

Ground clearance is reasonable for the class but range anxiety and front-wheel drive limit it to tarmac weekends.

Paint Protection

PPF for the Mahindra XUV400: What We Install and Why

Where it takes damage

Bonnet leading edge, lower front bumper and sills chip and sand-blast because the battery car sits low; the satin copper roof and gloss-black grille insert scratch from washing and are hard to repair.

Our recommendation

AG1 full-front with sill strips for most owners, and a roof treatment for dual-tone cars because the copper satin finish cannot be touched up; AG1 Square full body only if the owner plans to keep the car well past the model's withdrawal.

Coverage

Full front and sills standard; add the roof and grille insert on dual-tone cars.

FAQs

Mahindra XUV400: Questions Buyers Ask

Mahindra's official configurator, read on 29 October 2026, listed a single variant, the XUV400 EL Pro 39.4 kWh with 7.2 kW charger, at ₹17.49 lakh ex-showroom. Mahindra offered a ₹1 lakh festive benefit on it in October 2026.

Not officially. The XUV400 is still listed on Mahindra's SUV page and configurator, but only the EL Pro 39.4 kWh is orderable and the XUV 3XO EV launched in January 2026 with the same battery and motor at a lower price, so it is in run-out.

Mahindra quotes 456 km on the MIDC cycle for the 39.4 kWh battery and 359 km for the 34.5 kWh battery. Real-world highway range is considerably lower, as with every EV.

Yes. Bharat NCAP rated the XUV400 5 stars in November 2024 with 30.38/32 for adult and 43/49 for child occupant protection.

The low-set bumper and sills chip on highway runs and the satin copper roof scratches easily and cannot be touched up, so we recommend a full-front AG1 install with sill strips and a roof section on dual-tone cars. Message Auto Grid on WhatsApp for a plan.

Indicatively ₹17.98 lakh–₹18.24 lakh on-road in Hyderabad: ex-showroom ₹17.49 lakh (Delhi, 29 Oct 2026) plus Telangana life tax (0% (EV exemption)), first-year insurance and registration. EVs pay no road tax or registration fee in Telangana until 31 December 2026. Dealer quotes vary with insurance add-ons and accessories.
