The Auto Grid Review
Mahindra Bolero Review: Our Verdict
Bolero owners rarely walk into a detailing studio, and the ones who reach our Kondapur bay are usually buying a B8 for a farm or a site office and want the new paint to last. Mahindra's Bolero paint is utilitarian: thin on the flat door skins, with an orange-peel texture that hides swirls but chips readily on the vertical bonnet face and the slab front bumper. Diamond White is nearly every car we see; the new Stealth Black shows every wash mark. The square body and flat glass make it the easiest install on our list, and the high-mounted bonnet means the leading edge takes gravel at eye height on rural roads. Owners are practical, so a front-end-only package is what we usually fit, along with the sill and the lower tailgate where the side-facing third row loads and unloads bags.
What we like
- +Ladder frame, 210 Nm diesel and simple mechanicals that any roadside workshop understands
- +Seven seats under four metres with a 60-litre tank
- +2026 update finally brings a touchscreen, alloys and leatherette
- +Strong rural and fleet resale
What we’d change
- –Dual airbags and ABS only; no ESC, ISOFIX or crash-test rating
- –Side-facing third row
- –Leaf-spring rear is bouncy unladen
- –Manual gearbox only
Is the Bolero right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
Light steering and a short body help in Ameerpet traffic, but the clutch, the lack of an automatic and the bouncy ride make it a poor daily commuter.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
76 PS is adequate for a loaded two-lane highway run but the ORR at 100 km/h is noisy and busy; this is not a cruiser.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Two airbags, no ESC and a side-facing rear bench are hard to recommend for a family in 2026; it is a work vehicle first.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
A 1.5 diesel with 210 Nm and leaf springs has nothing for an enthusiast beyond honesty.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Cheap to run and repair, tough and with a resale value that barely drops in rural Telangana, though the base B4 is spartan.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
No rear AC vents, a vinyl or fabric bench and a leaf-spring rear end rule it out for anyone being driven.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
Rear-wheel drive only, but the ladder frame, high stance and simple suspension shrug off broken village roads better than any monocoque crossover.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Mahindra Bolero: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Vertical bonnet face and the flat front bumper chip from gravel on rural roads; the sills and lower tailgate scuff where the side-facing third row loads cargo, and Stealth Black shows wash marks early.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with sill strips for most Boleros; owners in dark colours or on daily gravel routes benefit from adding the doors and tailgate lower section rather than a full body.
Coverage
Front end standard; add sills, lower doors and tailgate for fleet and farm use.
