The Auto Grid Review
Mahindra Thar ROXX Review: Our Verdict
The ROXX is now the Thar we film most in Kondapur, and the typical car is an AX7L diesel automatic in Stealth Black with the dual-tone roof, or a Tango Red STAR EDN. Mahindra's paint on the ROXX is harder than on the XUV 3XO, but the gloss-black roof and the piano-black grille on the STAR EDN are magnets for wash swirls, and the R19 wheels throw stones into the rear-door lower edge and the arch lip. On highway cars the bonnet lip and the lower half of the front bumper chip first; on trail cars we see branch scratches along the full flank from the A-pillar back, because the five-door body is wider across the arches than owners expect. The long flat bonnet, upright windscreen and square doors make it a clean install, with the only awkward area being the moulded wheel-arch cladding, which we leave bare. A surprising number of owners ask for the hard top panoramic-sunroof surround to be filmed, because it marks easily when the roof is loaded.
What we like
- +5-star Bharat NCAP with six airbags across the range
- +Real low-range 4WD with a locking differential on the AX 4x4 automatics
- +Five usable seats and a boot, which the three-door never offered
- +Level 2 ADAS and a panoramic sunroof in a ladder-frame SUV
What we’d change
- –Waits of two months or more have persisted since launch
- –4WD is diesel-only and the automatic 4x4 variants were not open for online booking at the time of writing
- –Gloss-black roof and trims show swirl marks early
- –Tall body and all-terrain tyres mean more wind and road noise than a monocoque SUV
Is the Thar ROXX right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
The torque-converter automatic and the 540-degree view on the AX7L make it easier in traffic than it looks, but the 4428 mm length and tall stance are a handful in Jubilee Hills basements.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
The 2850 mm wheelbase and the Watt's-linkage rear make it far calmer on the ORR than the three-door, and the 400 Nm diesel AT cruises comfortably; the tyres still roar at speed.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Six airbags, a 5-star BNCAP score, ISOFIX and a proper rear bench make it the first Thar a family can justify; the boot is adequate rather than generous.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
The 4x4 AT with CrawlSmart, IntelliTurn and an electronic locker is more capable than most owners will ever test, and the 130 kW petrol AT is quick for a ladder-frame SUV.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Running costs, tyres and insurance are on the high side for a first car, and the base MX1 petrol lacks the sunroof and screens buyers expect at this money; resale is the saving grace.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Rear legroom is acceptable and the ride is settled, but the climb in, the noise and the image are wrong for a chauffeured car.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
650 mm wading, 41.7-degree approach, terrain modes and a lockable rear axle in a body that carries five people and their bags: this is the car for Nallamala forest weekends.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Mahindra Thar ROXX: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Bonnet lip and lower front bumper chip first on highway cars; the rear-door lower edges and arch lips take stones from the R19 wheels, and the gloss-black roof, STAR EDN piano-black grille and the full flank pick up branch and wash scratches.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front plus lower-door and arch-lip strips for city and highway owners; AG1 Square full body for AX7L, STAR EDN and any 4x4 car that will see trails, with the gloss-black roof included because it marks fastest.
Coverage
Full front standard; add doors, rear quarters and roof for dark or dual-tone cars; full body for off-road use.

AX5L diesel AT 4WD is the sweet spot for off-road use with Level 2 ADAS and the electronic locking differential; AX7L adds the panoramic sunroof, R19 wheels, Harman Kardon audio and ventilated powered seats. MX5 is the value pick for buyers who do not need 4WD.
Yes. Bharat NCAP rated the Thar ROXX 5 stars in November 2024 with 31.09/32 for adult and 45/49 for child occupant protection, the highest ICE score at the time, and the rating applies to all variants.

Mahindra has not published ARAI efficiency figures for the Thar ROXX on its official site or brochure, so we do not list one. Owners we speak to report the 2.2 diesel as the more frugal of the two engines on the highway.
We recommend it. The bonnet lip, lower bumper and the lower rear doors are the panels we repair most on ROXX cars, and the dark roof swirls quickly. A full-front AG1 install with door and arch strips is our standard package; message Auto Grid on WhatsApp for a plan for your variant.
