The Auto Grid Review
Mahindra XUV 7XO Review: Our Verdict
The XUV 7XO has quickly become the premium Mahindra we see most in Kondapur, and it carries over the XUV700's one real paint weakness: the clear coat on the big flat bonnet and the long doors is soft, so Galaxy Grey and Midnight Black cars arrive with holograms from the dealer PDI and swirl within a month of roadside washing. The new piano-black grille, the gloss cladding along the sills and the flush door handles are the parts that scratch first in daily use, and the talon accents in the grille trap grit. On the ORR the bumper's lower lip and the leading edge of the bonnet chip, and the R19 wheels on the AX7L throw stones into the rear-door lower edges. The ventilated-seat AX7L diesel AT, usually in Ruby Velvet or Stealth Black, is the dominant spec here, and most owners want the entire gloss-black package included. It is a long, mostly flat car to film with awkward areas only around the sequential tail-lamp recesses and the deploying handles.
What we like
- +5-star Bharat NCAP with six airbags and curtain coverage to row three as standard
- +Triple-screen cockpit, Dolby Atmos and Level 2 ADAS at prices that undercut rivals
- +Both engines are strong: 203 PS petrol and a 450 Nm diesel with optional AWD
- +Six-seat captain-chair option and ventilated seats front and rear
What we’d change
- –Soft clear coat shows holograms and swirls early
- –Gloss-black grille, cladding and flush handles mark in daily use
- –AWD is limited to the diesel AX7T and AX7L automatics
- –Waits of up to three months in Hyderabad through 2026
Is the XUV 7XO right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
The 540-degree camera, auto-deploying handles and the smooth torque-converter automatic help, but at 4695 mm it is a lot of car for Jubilee Hills lanes and basements.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
The 450 Nm diesel AT, DAVINCI damping, adaptive cruise and the quiet cabin make it the most relaxed sub-30-lakh car on the Hyderabad–Bengaluru highway.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
A 5-star BNCAP, curtain airbags to the third row, ISOFIX, a usable third row with its own AC vents and a 60:40 tumble second row make it the family default in this price band.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
The 203 PS mStallion petrol is genuinely quick and the chassis is composed for a three-row SUV; it is front-driven and understeers at the limit, but it is the enthusiast's pick among big Mahindras.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Too large and expensive to insure for most first-car buyers, although the AX petrol manual is a well-equipped entry point for a confident driver.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
The six-seat AX7L with captain chairs, Boss Mode on the co-driver seat, ventilated rear seats and a rear sunblind is a proper chauffeur-driven car at a fraction of a German SUV's price.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
The AWD diesel handles wet ghats and mild trails, but with road tyres, a monocoque body and no low range it is a soft-roader; the Scorpio-N 4WD is the real explorer.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Mahindra XUV 7XO: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Bumper lower lip and bonnet leading edge chip first; the soft clear coat on the bonnet and long doors holograms after dealer buffing, and the piano-black grille, gloss cladding, flush door handles and rear-door lower edges scratch in daily use.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with gloss-black grille and handle patches for AX5 and AX7 buyers; AG1 Square full body on AX7T and AX7L cars in Ruby Velvet, Midnight Black or Stealth Black, with the sill cladding included. We correct delivery holograms before filming.
Coverage
Full front, handles and cladding standard; full body for dark top trims; add roof-rail and Skyroof-surround strips for cars that carry luggage.
