The Auto Grid Review
Tata Harrier Review: Our Verdict
Harriers come to Kondapur as big, dark cars with big, flat bonnets, and that bonnet is the whole story. It is one of the largest single panels we film, it sits almost horizontal, and on the Outer Ring Road it takes stone hits across its full width — the chips cluster on the leading 30 cm. The Stealth edition’s matte paint cannot be polished, so any scratch is permanent until we film it, and we now tell every Stealth buyer to book us before registration. Tata’s paint on the Harrier is thicker than on the Nexon but softer than on the Sierra; the Fearless and UL trims arrive with dealer-applied ceramic that we usually strip because it was laid over swirls. Diesel ATs dominate what we see, and the petrol cars only started arriving in numbers this year. The 19-inch Blackstone alloys on UL trims kerb badly in Jubilee Hills basements.
What we like
- +Strong 350 Nm diesel with a proper torque-converter AT
- +Level 2 ADAS, 360° camera and powered seats on Fearless and above
- +Dual 5-star ratings
- +Road presence and a planted highway ride
What we’d change
- –Bonnet chips across its full width
- –Stealth matte paint cannot be polished
- –Rear drum brakes on lower trims
- –Petrol variants had 10–12-week waits in August
Is the Harrier right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
It is a wide car for Hyderabad lanes and the diesel AT is thirsty in traffic, though the 360° camera and ADAS help.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
This is the Harrier’s home: 350 Nm, adaptive cruise on Fearless+, a quiet cabin and a ride that flattens the Bengaluru highway.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Dual 5-star ratings, seven airbags on top trims and a 445 L boot; it only loses a point to the Safari for the third row it does not have.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
The turbo-petrol AT is smooth rather than sharp, and the car is heavy; the diesel’s torque is the fun part.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Too big, too expensive to run and insure for a first car, though the Smart trim is a value entry.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Powered, ventilated seats, rear sunshades, a quiet diesel and a commanding rear view; the Safari is the better pure rear-seat car.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
Terrain modes, a strong diesel and long-travel suspension suit ghat roads, but it is front-wheel drive and there is no 4x4.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Tata Harrier: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The near-horizontal bonnet chips across its full width on highway runs, followed by the front bumper, the mirror caps and the 19-inch wheel-arch lips; Stealth matte paint scratches permanently.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front is the minimum for any Harrier; AG1 Square full body in matte-compatible finish for Stealth editions, and full body on Red Dark and Fearless UL cars where the dark paint shows every swirl.
Coverage
Full front standard; full body with matte film for Stealth and with gloss film for the dark editions; door-edge and sill guards for ghat-road users.
