The Auto Grid Review
Tata Nexon Review: Our Verdict
No single model crosses our Kondapur bay more often than the Nexon, and after a few hundred of them we know its paint well. Tata’s clear coat on the Nexon is soft enough that a dealer-side buff before delivery leaves holograms in Daytona Grey and Ocean Blue that only show under our inspection lamps. The bonnet is short and steep, so the front bumper and the lower grille take most of the ORR stone damage; the lower doors behind the front wheels sand-blast on Shamshabad highway trips. Fearless+ PS DCA is the trim we see most, almost always with the sunroof and in Pristine White or the Red #Dark. The sequential tail-lamp cluster is a known paint-free zone; the plastic cladding around it scratches but holds. It is a straightforward car to film — big flat doors, a bonnet with simple creases — and the dealer-delivered swirls are the main thing we correct before the film goes down.
What we like
- +Best safety record in its class — 5-star GNCAP and BNCAP
- +Every gearbox type on the menu, including a real DCA
- +Turbo iCNG with a usable 321 L boot
- +Strong dealer and service network across Telangana
What we’d change
- –Soft clear coat shows dealer-buff holograms
- –Over 80 variants and three editions confuse buyers
- –ADAS and JBL are locked to one petrol DCA trim
- –Rear seat is tight for three adults
Is the Nexon right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
The 7-speed DCA petrol or the 6-speed AMT make it a relaxed commuter, the turning radius is tight and 208 mm clearance handles broken Madhapur roads.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
The diesel’s 260 Nm and the sorted ride make it a good expressway car, though wind noise above 100 km/h is a step behind the Sierra.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Six airbags, the top crash scores and ISOFIX make it the safe-choice compact SUV; the 382 L boot swallows a weekend’s luggage.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
The turbo-petrol has real mid-range, but the chassis and brakes are tuned for comfort rather than corners.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Easy to drive, cheap to insure, excellent resale and a huge used-market for it later; the Smart and Pure trims are sensible first cars.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Rear legroom and seat height are compact-SUV sized; an executive will want the Harrier or Safari.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
Ground clearance is good for a compact, but it is front-wheel drive only and the tyres are road-biased.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Tata Nexon: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Front bumper and lower grille take the first chips, followed by the bonnet lip and the lower doors behind the front wheels; dealer-buff swirls are common on grey and blue cars.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with lower-door and sill strips for commuters; AG1 Square full body on Fearless+ and Red #Dark cars where the paint is the point. We correct the delivery swirls before filming.
Coverage
Full front standard; add lower doors and rear-wheel-arch guards for highway-heavy users, and full body for the editions.
