The Auto Grid Review
Mahindra XUV 3XO Review: Our Verdict
After the Nexon, the XUV 3XO is the compact SUV that crosses our Kondapur bay most, and we have learnt that Mahindra's clear coat on this car is thinner than on its bigger SUVs: Galaxy Grey and Nebula Blue cars arrive with buff holograms, and Tango Red fades at the bonnet centre within two summers if left uncoated. The long bonnet with its soft crease and the short front overhang mean the bumper lip and the lower grille collect ORR stone chips, and the Infinity tail-lamp bar's piano-black housing scratches from the lightest wash. REVX cars with the dual-tone black roof and the piano-black alloys are the ones owners want fully covered, because every contrast panel marks. The AX7L TGDi automatic is the trim we see most, almost always with the Skyroof, and the panoramic glass surround is worth including because the roof is where the sun hits hardest in Hyderabad.
What we like
- +Six airbags, ESC, all-disc brakes and a 5-star BNCAP as standard across the range
- +Widest cabin and longest wheelbase in the class, with a genuine panoramic roof
- +Only Level 2 ADAS in the segment and a real torque-converter automatic
- +Petrol, TGDi petrol, diesel, AMT and now CNG under one roof
What we’d change
- –Thin clear coat shows holograms and swirls early
- –More than 30 variants across MX, REVX and AX make choosing hard
- –Diesel comes only with the AMT, not the torque converter
- –ADAS is limited to the L trims and REVX A
Is the XUV 3XO right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
A 5.3 m turning radius, the 6-speed torque-converter automatic, 201 mm clearance and dual-zone AC make it one of the easiest compact SUVs for the Hitec City crawl; the ZNG adds low running cost.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
The 130 PS TGDi and 300 Nm diesel both cruise comfortably at ORR speeds and the L trims add adaptive cruise, though tyre roar on the R17s is noticeable.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Six airbags, 5-star BNCAP, ISOFIX, the widest rear bench in the class and a 364-litre boot cover every family box; the diesel AMT is jerkier than a parent would like.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
The TGDi's 230 Nm and the Zoom mode give real mid-range punch, but the soft ride and light steering are tuned for comfort rather than corners.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
MX1 and REVX M are well-equipped starting points, the service network is everywhere in Telangana and resale is solid, although variant sprawl makes it easy to overspend.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Rear space is best-in-class for a sub-4m car, but it is still a compact SUV; executives will want the XUV 7XO.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
201 mm of clearance and the diesel's torque handle ghat roads and broken tracks, but it is front-wheel drive on road tyres.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Mahindra XUV 3XO: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Bumper lip and lower grille chip first, followed by the bonnet centre and the lower doors; the piano-black tail-lamp bar and REVX black roof and alloys scratch from washing, and Tango Red fades on uncoated bonnets.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front plus sill strips for MX and AX5 cars; AG1 Square full body on AX7L, REVX and dual-tone cars where the contrast panels are the point. We correct delivery holograms before the film goes down and include the Skyroof surround.
Coverage
Full front standard; add lower doors and the tail-lamp bar for highway users, full body for dual-tone and REVX editions.
