The Auto Grid Review
Mahindra XUV 3XO EV Review: Our Verdict
The XUV 3XO EV has only been in our Kondapur bay since the spring, and it behaves like the petrol car with a quieter drivetrain: the same thin clear coat that holograms under a dealer buff, the same bumper lip and bonnet centre that collect ORR chips, and the same piano-black Infinity tail-lamp bar that scratches from a bucket wash. What changes is weight. The battery car sits lower on its springs and the lower front bumper and the sills take more sand-blasting on Shamshabad runs than the ICE 3XO. Nearly every one we have filmed is an AX7L with the Skyroof, and owners are keen on keeping the roof glass surround and the charging-flap area clean, because the flap gets opened every night. It is a straightforward install with the same panels as the petrol car.
What we like
- +Six airbags, ESP and all-disc brakes standard, with Level 2 ADAS and a 360° camera on AX7L
- +50 kW DC charging gives 0–80% in 50 minutes
- +Full XUV 3XO cabin width and a 364-litre boot with no battery intrusion
- +Two variants keep the decision simple
What we’d change
- –Single 39.4 kWh battery; no bigger pack option
- –Real-world range of about 285 km limits highway use
- –No Bharat NCAP result yet for the EV version
- –Wall charger is a paid option
Is the XUV 3XO EV right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
A 10.6 m turning circle, single-pedal drive, 310 Nm from standstill and a week of commuting on one charge make it an ideal Gachibowli-to-Hitec City car.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
About 285 km of real-world range and 50 kW peak charging mean a Vijayawada run needs a planned stop; it is a city EV first.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Six airbags, ADAS on the AX7L, ISOFIX, a wide rear bench and a flat 364-litre boot work well for school runs and weekend shopping.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
Instant torque and the Fearless mode are fun at traffic lights, but the soft front-drive chassis and road tyres do not reward hard driving.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Low running costs and an automatic with no clutch suit a first-time buyer, though the purchase price and EV resale uncertainty need weighing against a petrol AX5.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Quiet and smooth, but it remains a sub-4m car with compact rear space; not a chauffeur-driven vehicle.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
190 mm minimum clearance and front-wheel drive handle rough village roads, but range anxiety rules out remote ghat trips.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Mahindra XUV 3XO EV: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Lower front bumper, bonnet centre and sills take the first chips and sand-blasting because the battery car rides slightly lower; the piano-black tail-lamp bar, Skyroof surround and the charging-flap edge scratch from daily use.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with sill strips and a charging-flap patch for AX5 buyers; AG1 Square full body on AX7L cars with the Skyroof and leatherette cabin, since owners keep EVs longer and the clear coat is thin.
Coverage
Full front and sills standard; add the tail-lamp bar, roof surround and charge flap; full body for AX7L.
