The Auto Grid Review
Mahindra Thar OG Review: Our Verdict
The three-door Thar has been one of the most-filmed cars in our Kondapur bay since 2020, and the OG changes the job in one important way: the new R19 alloys on the ZXT sit under flared arches that now catch every stone the front tyres throw. On the outgoing car the bonnet edge, the exposed fender-top latches and the flat tailgate around the spare were the panels we re-touched most, and the matte-black wheel-arch cladding scratched white within a season of Gandipet trail runs. Mahindra's paint on Thars is thick and reasonably hard, but the solid-colour Everest White and the new Artemis Silver show swirl marks from roadside washes very quickly. Owners here pick the 2.2 diesel 4WD AT in the ZXT trim almost every time, usually in Stealth Black or Tango Red, and most arrive within a week of delivery because the first highway drive to Srisailam has already peppered the front bumper. It is a simple car to protect: big flat doors, a slab bonnet and a vertical windscreen that collects rock strikes.
What we like
- +Genuine low-range 4WD, locking differential and 232 mm clearance
- +Six airbags, all-disc brakes and ESP now on the top trim
- +Three engines and two gearboxes across just three trims keep the choice simple
- +Resale strength that no other lifestyle SUV in India matches
What we’d change
- –Four seats and a boot you reach through the side-hinged tailgate
- –Introductory prices end after 30 November 2026
- –Hard top only; no convertible roof in the OG line-up
- –Not yet crash-tested by Bharat NCAP
Is the Thar OG right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
The new electric steering and the 6AT make Madhapur traffic bearable, but the turning circle, tall step-in and 50-litre petrol tank are not commuter virtues.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
DAVINCI damping and the Pentalink rear should calm the old car's hop on the ORR, but a ladder-frame, short-wheelbase box with all-terrain tyres is still noisy at 100 km/h.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Four seats, no boot to speak of and a side-hinged tailgate rule it out for school runs; a family that wants the badge should look at the five-door ROXX.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
A low-range transfer case, an electronic locker, a torquey 2.2 diesel or the 330 Nm petrol and a proper manual: this is the car the Hyderabad off-road clubs actually run on Sunday mornings.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Insurance and tyres are expensive and the mileage is modest, though the Thar's resale value cushions the ownership cost better than anything else on this list.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
The second row is reached by tipping the front seat and legroom is tight; nobody is chauffeured in a three-door Thar by choice.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
650 mm wading, 40-degree approach angle, Mud/Sand/Snow terrain modes and a wider track make it the default choice for Ananthagiri forest tracks and monsoon river crossings.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Mahindra Thar OG: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Front bumper, bonnet leading edge and the exposed fender-top latches take the first chips; the flat tailgate around the spare wheel and the lower doors behind the front tyres sand-blast on highway runs, and the black wheel-arch cladding scuffs white on trails.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front (bumper, bonnet, fenders, mirrors, headlamp area) plus door-edge and sill strips for most Thar OG owners; AG1 Square full body for ZXT 4WD cars that will see regular off-road use, because branch scratches arrive on every panel, not just the nose.
Coverage
Full front as the baseline; add lower doors, rear quarter panels, the tailgate face and A-pillar/windscreen-frame strips for trail cars.

FAQs
Mahindra Thar OG: Questions Buyers Ask
Mahindra lists the Thar OG from ₹10.32 lakh (AXT 1.5 diesel MT RWD) to ₹18.99 lakh (ZXT 2.2 diesel AT 4WD) ex-showroom, as per the 22 September 2026 launch release and the official configurator read on 29 October 2026. These are introductory prices valid for deliveries until 30 November 2026.
The Thar OG is the three-door, four-seat model on a 2450 mm wheelbase; the Thar ROXX is the five-door, five-seat model on a 2850 mm wheelbase with a larger boot, more features and higher-output engine tunes. The OG is the purer off-roader, the ROXX the family-friendly one.
ZXT is the only trim with six airbags, all-disc brakes, LED headlamps and TPMS, so it is our recommendation if the budget allows. The 2.2 mHawk 4WD AT is the most popular configuration we see; the 1.5 D117 RWD manual keeps the price down but has no 4WD.
Deliveries started on 11 October 2026. Dealer surveys published in September 2026 quoted one to three months for the outgoing three-door Thar, with over two months in Hyderabad; expect similar or longer waits for the OG's popular ZXT 4WD diesel automatic until production catches up.
Not yet. The Thar OG launched in September 2026 and had not been published by Bharat NCAP at the time of writing. Mahindra says the ZXT carries six airbags, ESP with rollover mitigation, a roll cage and all-disc brakes.
More than most cars, yes. Its vertical nose and exposed fender latches take rock strikes, and off-road branches scratch the doors and arches. A full-front AG1 install with door and sill strips is our standard Thar package; message Auto Grid on WhatsApp for a plan for your variant.
Indicatively ₹12.39 lakh–₹23.23 lakh on-road in Hyderabad: ex-showroom ₹10.32 lakh–₹18.99 lakh (Delhi, 29 Oct 2026) plus Telangana life tax (17%–18%), first-year insurance and registration. Dealer quotes vary with insurance add-ons and accessories.
The top variant is the ZXT 2.2 mHawk AT 4WD (Diesel, 6-speed AT) at ₹18.99 lakh ex-showroom Delhi; the base model is the AXT 1.5 D117 MT RWD (Diesel, 6-speed MT) at ₹10.32 lakh. 15 variants in all, as of 29 Oct 2026.
Thar OG: 3-door lifestyle off-road SUV, ₹10.32 lakh – ₹18.99 lakh ex-showroom, Diesel/Petrol, Auto Grid rating 4.1/5. Scorpio Classic: Ladder-frame 7/9-seat SUV, ₹13.43 lakh – ₹17.48 lakh ex-showroom, Diesel, rated 3.3/5. See the Mahindra Scorpio Classic page for its full variant list and our verdict.
