The Auto Grid Review
Mahindra Scorpio-N Review: Our Verdict
The Scorpio-N is the Mahindra we see most often in Kondapur after the Thar, and the pattern is consistent: a Z8L diesel automatic, usually Stealth Black or Deep Forest, often the 4WD, delivered with buff holograms already in the clear coat because the dealer PDI tried to remove transport marks. Mahindra's paint on the N is harder than the Classic's but the big flat bonnet and the slab doors are enormous canvases that show every swirl, and the chrome grille slats and the bumper's lower lip catch the first stones on the ORR. The sting-shaped DRL surrounds and the R18 wheels are a gravel path straight into the front door's lower edge. It is a large, mostly flat car to film, with the only tricky sections being the sculpted bonnet shoulders and the tail-lamp recesses. Owners of the new 2026 cars with the panoramic roof also ask us to protect the roof rails and the roof surround, which is sensible on a vehicle that carries luggage on top.
What we like
- +Five-star Global NCAP adult rating in a body-on-frame SUV
- +Strong engines: 203 PS petrol and 175 PS / 400 Nm diesel with real 4XPLOR 4WD
- +2026 update adds a panoramic roof, 540° camera, ADAS and bigger screens
- +Immense road presence and towing-grade torque
What we’d change
- –Three-star child rating and only two airbags on the lowest trims
- –Z2 and Z4 diesel manuals get the 132 PS tune, not the full 175 PS
- –Heavy, tall and thirsty in city traffic
- –Odd rupee-level pricing after the October 2026 revision confuses buyers
Is the Scorpio-N right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
The torque-converter automatic and the 540-degree camera help, but at 4662 mm, 1917 mm wide and well over two tonnes it is tiring in Madhapur traffic and basement ramps.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
The 400 Nm diesel AT, the Pentalink rear and adaptive cruise on the Z8L make it one of the most relaxed Hyderabad–Vijayawada cars under thirty lakh.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
A 5-star adult rating, six airbags, ISOFIX and a genuinely usable third row; the 3-star child score and the side-hinged tailgate's loading height are the caveats.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
A 203 PS petrol with rear-wheel drive and a proper low-range 4WD diesel in the same line-up is rare; it rolls in corners but it is the most entertaining ladder-frame SUV sold here.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Too big, too thirsty and too expensive to insure for a first car, though the Z2 petrol is a strong-value entry if the size does not intimidate.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
The six-seat Z8L with captain chairs, rear AC, the high hip point and the commanding view is the reason so many Scorpio-Ns in Hyderabad have a driver up front.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
4XPLOR with 4H/4L, terrain modes, a brake locking differential and a 57-litre tank make the Z8L 4WD the family off-roader for Papikondalu and Nallamala trips.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Mahindra Scorpio-N: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Chrome grille slats, the bumper's lower lip and the front door lower edges take the first stone damage; the huge flat bonnet and doors show dealer-buff holograms and wash swirls, and the roof surround and rails mark on cars that carry luggage.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with lower-door strips for most Z8/Z8T buyers; AG1 Square full body on Z8L cars in Stealth Black, Deep Forest or Oceanic where the owner bought the car for its finish. We correct the delivery swirls before filming.
Coverage
Full front and lower doors standard; full body for dark top trims; add roof rails and the panoramic-roof surround on 2026 cars.
