The Auto Grid Review
Tata Safari Review: Our Verdict
The Safari arrives at Kondapur as a family’s big purchase, almost always a diesel AT in a dark colour — Daytona Grey, Royal Blue or the Dark edition — and usually within days of the puja. Its bonnet behaves exactly like the Harrier’s: a wide, flat panel that collects chips across its leading edge on the Vijayawada highway. The extra 60 mm of length is all behind the C-pillar, so the Safari adds a tailgate that is constantly loaded and scuffed on its top edge, plus a rear bumper that catches on the Gachibowli basement ramps because of the longer overhang. Paint quality matches the Harrier — decent thickness, soft enough to swirl under a dealer’s rotary — and the Stealth matte finish again needs film before anything touches it. The captain-seat 6S cars are the ones owners are most protective of, and they are the ones we film full-body.
What we like
- +Genuine six- or seven-seat space with third-row vents
- +Same strong diesel AT as the Harrier
- +Dual 5-star ratings with seven airbags on top trims
- +Captain-seat 6S option with Boss mode
What we’d change
- –Bonnet and tailgate top edge chip and scuff
- –Long rear overhang scrapes on ramps
- –Petrol waits of 10–12 weeks in August
- –72 variants to decode
Is the Safari right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
It is 4.67 m long and wide; the 360° camera helps, but it is not a car for daily Punjagutta traffic.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
The best Tata for a loaded family on the expressway — 350 Nm, adaptive cruise on Accomplished, and a third row that adults tolerate.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Three rows, ISOFIX, dual 5-star ratings and rear AC for every row; the 420 L boot grows huge with the third row folded.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
Heavy and soft; the petrol AT is refined and the diesel has torque, but body roll and light steering make it a cruiser, not a driver’s SUV.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Price, size, insurance and running cost put it well outside a sensible first car; learn on something a metre shorter.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
The 6S captain seats with Boss mode, sunshades and a quiet diesel make the Safari the best chauffeur-driven Tata.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
Terrain modes, a strong diesel and long-travel suspension manage ghats and dirt tracks; no 4x4, and the overhang limits approach angles.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Tata Safari: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Flat bonnet leading edge, front bumper, tailgate top edge and the rear bumper corners (long overhang); Stealth matte paint and the dark editions mark permanently or show every swirl.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front plus tailgate loading strip for every Safari; AG1 Square full body for 6S captain-seat cars and for the Stealth (matte-compatible film) and Red Dark editions.
Coverage
Full front and tailgate strip as standard; full body with rear-bumper top and sill guards for family road-trip cars.
