The Auto Grid Review
Tata Altroz Review: Our Verdict
The Altroz is the hatchback we most enjoy filming at Kondapur because Tata gave it a proper, deep paint job — the Ember Glow and Dune Glow metallics have real flake and the clear coat is thicker than the Tiago’s. Its weak spots are structural rather than paint: the 165 mm ground clearance means the front bumper lip meets every Kondapur speed breaker, the long doors on a five-door hatch swing into pillars in tight basements, and the flush door handles on the 2025 car scuff where fingernails find the release. Most Altroz buyers who visit are Creative S or Accomplished S petrol DCA customers who chose it over a Baleno for the safety rating, and the diesel owners are the long-distance commuters from Kompally and beyond. The roof is a single large flat panel that collects bird-dropping etching on cars parked under trees in Banjara Hills.
What we like
- +Thick, well-finished paint for the segment
- +5-star BNCAP and GNCAP — the safest hatchback sold here
- +Only diesel in the class, 25.1 km/l ARAI
- +6-speed DCA petrol is a genuine automatic
What we’d change
- –Low 165 mm clearance scrapes the bumper lip
- –Flush handles scuff
- –NA petrol is modest on the highway
- –No turbo-petrol any more
Is the Altroz right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
The DCA petrol is the best city gearbox in a Tata hatchback, visibility is good and the iCNG AMT keeps running cost minimal.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
The 1.5 diesel with 200 Nm is the long-distance pick and the ALFA platform rides flat at 100 km/h; the NA petrol needs patience.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Six airbags, two 5-star ratings, ISOFIX and a 345 L boot; rear space is among the best in the class.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
The chassis is capable but 88 PS gives it little to work with since the turbo-petrol was dropped.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Safe, easy to park, cheap to run on CNG, good resale and Tata’s widest service reach — a textbook first car.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Rear seat is roomy for a hatchback but ride polish and refinement are hatchback-grade.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
165 mm clearance and road tyres limit it to tarmac; a Punch is the better choice for dirt tracks.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Tata Altroz: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Front bumper lower lip (speed breakers), door edges and flush-handle recesses, and the flat roof under tree parking; bonnet chips on highway diesels.
Our recommendation
AG1 front bumper and bonnet with door-edge and handle-recess guards as the city package; AG1 full-front for diesel commuters and full body for Ember Glow and Dune Glow cars whose metallic paint is worth keeping.
Coverage
Bumper-and-bonnet entry package; full front standard for highway users; full body optional for the metallic shades.
