The Auto Grid Review
Hyundai i20 Review: Our Verdict
The i20 is the premium hatchback we see most in the Kondapur bay, typically an Asta(O) IVT in Atlas White with the black roof or a Fiery Red Sportz(O). Hyundai's paint on the i20 is a step up from the NIOS: more even, with a harder clear coat, though Starry Night and Titanium Black still arrive with light dealer-polish swirls on the roof and bonnet. The low, wide parametric grille and the sharp bumper corners are the chip zones, and the i20's long doors collect car-park dings at the swage line. The painted black roof on dual-tone cars and the black-painted alloys and skid plates on the Knight edition swirl and scratch respectively. The matte Titan Grey needs a matte-specific film. It is an easy car to film well because the panels are large and flat with few creases, and the tailgate spoiler is the only fiddly piece.
What we like
- +Six airbags, ESC and ISOFIX standard on every trim
- +IVT automatic is smoother than rival AMTs
- +Bose audio, 10.25-inch screen and Bluelink on top trims
- +Big cabin and boot for a hatchback
What we’d change
- –Only 83–88 PS; the turbo lives in the N Line
- –Global NCAP 2022 test of the older spec scored 3 stars; no Bharat NCAP result
- –Price overlaps with the Venue
- –Dual-tone roof swirls easily
Is the i20 right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
The IVT, light steering, good visibility and a 360-degree-free but clear rear camera make it an excellent Gachibowli commuter with a refined cabin.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
Stable and quiet for a hatchback at 100 km/h with cruise control, but the engine runs out of breath when overtaking with four aboard.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Six airbags, ISOFIX and ESC standard, a genuinely roomy rear seat and a 311-litre class boot; only the older 3-star Global NCAP result and no BNCAP score count against it.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
The chassis is tidy but the 1.2 is not; the i20 N Line with the 120 PS turbo is the driver's version.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Sportz and Sportz(O) are well-equipped, safe first cars with Hyundai's service network, though the Grand i10 NIOS is the cheaper route.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Rear legroom is best-in-class for a hatchback, but a chauffeur-driven buyer will want the Verna or Creta.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
Low ground clearance and road tyres make it a tarmac-only car; ghat roads are fine, dirt tracks and water crossings are not.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Hyundai i20: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Parametric grille surround and bumper corners chip first; long doors take swage-line dings; the painted black roof on dual-tone cars and the Knight's black alloys and skid plates scratch and swirl. Matte Titan Grey cannot be polished.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with door-edge and sill strips for Sportz and Asta cars; AG1 Square full body on Knight and dual-tone cars, with a matte-finish film on Titan Grey Matte.
Coverage
Full front standard; add the roof on dual-tone cars and full body for Knight and matte editions.

FAQs
Hyundai i20: Questions Buyers Ask
Hyundai's Delhi list on 29 October 2026 runs from ₹5,99,700 for the 1.2 Kappa MT Era to ₹10,68,200 for the Asta(O) IVT dual-tone Knight, ex-showroom. The IVT automatic starts at ₹8,86,200 (Sportz IVT).
Sportz(O) brings the sunroof, Bose audio, rear camera, cruise control and automatic climate control. Asta(O) is the only trim with the 10.25-inch navigation screen, Bluelink, dashcam and LED headlamps.
The current i20 has no Bharat NCAP result. Global NCAP tested the older two-airbag i20 in April 2022 and gave it 3 stars for adult and child occupants; every i20 sold today has six airbags, ESC and ISOFIX as standard.
The N Line swaps the 83 PS 1.2 for the 120 PS 1.0 turbo with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT, adds all-disc brakes, a twin exhaust and a firmer chassis. The standard i20 gets the smoother IVT and more colour and trim choice.
The grille surround and bumper corners chip first and dual-tone roofs swirl quickly, so a full-front AG1 film with sill strips is our standard i20 package and Knight or matte cars get full body. Message Auto Grid on WhatsApp for a plan for your trim.
