The Auto Grid Review
Maruti Suzuki WagonR Review: Our Verdict
No hatchback comes through Kondapur more often than the WagonR, and most of them are ZXi+ AGS cars in Gallant Red or the dual-tone Bluish Black roof. The tall, flat doors are a magnet for parking dings and shopping-trolley scrapes, and because the paint is a thin metallic over a flat panel, every ding shows. The front bumper is wide and low-slung for a tall car, so it scrapes on speed-breakers and collects chips from highway runs to Shamshabad. Roof edges on the dual-tone cars show rub marks from roof-rack straps and car covers. The upside is that flat panels film beautifully: a full-front package plus door-edge strips covers almost everything we see damaged, and the big flat bonnet is one of the quickest in the range.
What we like
- +Best space-per-rupee in the Maruti range with a 335 L boot
- +Four powertrains: 1.0, 1.2, CNG and flex fuel
- +Side and curtain airbags and ESP across the range
- +Flat panels are easy to protect
What we’d change
- –Tall flat doors ding easily in car parks
- –Front bumper scrapes on speed-breakers
- –Touchscreen and alloys only on ZXi+
Is the WagonR right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
Tall seating, a 4.7 m turning radius and the AGS make it the easiest family hatch to live with in traffic; the 1.0 CNG is the cheapest to run.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
The 1.2 K12N holds 100 km/h on the ORR happily enough, but the tall body feels crosswinds and there is no cruise control.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Upright seating, a flat floor and the 335 L boot make it a genuine four-adult car; side and curtain airbags and ESP are listed on all variants.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
Body roll and a soft setup; the 1.2 is brisk but the chassis has no appetite for it.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Easy to drive, cheap to maintain, unbeatable resale — the reason it is India’s default first family car.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Rear seat is upright and roomy for a hatch, but refinement and road noise rule it out for chauffeured use.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
Takes four and luggage to a hill station on tarmac; the low front bumper and road tyres end it there.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Maruti Suzuki WagonR: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Tall flat doors and door edges take parking dings; the low front bumper scrapes and chips; roof edges on dual-tone cars show cover and rack rub.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front plus door-edge guards is the package we fit most; AG1 Square full body for the dual-tone ZXi+ cars whose owners want the contrast roof kept clean.
Coverage
Full front standard; add door edges, sills and rear bumper corners for apartment-parking owners.
