The Auto Grid Review
Maruti Suzuki Swift Review: Our Verdict
The fourth-generation Swift is a regular in our Kondapur bay, nearly always a ZXi+ in Sizzling Red or the Luster Blue dual-tone, bought by someone who wanted a hatch that looks quick. The paint is a noticeable step up from the WagonR and Celerio — the metallic coat is deeper — but the nose is low and the bonnet is short and steeply raked, so the front bumper lip and the lower grille take stone damage from ORR runs within the first few thousand kilometres. The blacked-out A-pillars and the dual-tone roof edge show cover rub, and the lower doors behind the front wheels sand-blast on wet roads. The bonnet is one curved panel with a strong central crease that films well, and the headlamps are large but simple, so a full-front package sits cleanly without relief cuts.
What we like
- +Cheapest to run of the premium hatches: 25.75 km/l AMT and a CNG AGS
- +Six airbags, ESP and ISOFIX on the petrol range
- +Deep metallic paint and tidy panel gaps
- +Three-cylinder Z12E is frugal and torquey enough in town
What we’d change
- –Low nose and lip chip first
- –Three-cylinder thrum at idle and under load
- –265 L boot is the smallest in its class
Is the Swift right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
The AMT, light steering, a 4.8 m turning circle and 25 km/l claimed economy make it the Maruti we recommend most for a Hitec City commute.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
Stable enough at 100 km/h and the ZXi+ gets cruise control, but the three-cylinder gets vocal and the small tank means frequent stops.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Six airbags and ISOFIX are standard, the rear seat takes two adults, but the 265 L boot limits it as a family’s only car.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
The chassis is still the sharpest small Maruti and the manual is slick, but the Z12E has less punch than the old K12 and the AMT is for traffic, not corners.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Easy to drive, strong resale, big service network; the only caveat is insurance and the temptation to drive it hard.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
A compact hatch with a low rear seat and no rear recline is not an executive car.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
Fine for a ghat run on tarmac with two aboard; the low nose scrapes on broken approaches and there is no clearance for tracks.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Maruti Suzuki Swift: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Front bumper lip and lower grille chip first because the nose is low; lower doors sand-blast behind the front wheels; the dual-tone roof edge and black A-pillars show cover rub.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with lower-door strips for commuters; AG1 Square full body on the Sizzling Red and dual-tone ZXi+ cars where the paint is the reason the owner chose it.
Coverage
Full front standard; add lower doors and rear-arch guards for highway-heavy users, full body for the dual-tone cars.
