The Auto Grid Review
Maruti Suzuki Baleno Review: Our Verdict
The facelifted Baleno has only been on sale since September, but the first few through Kondapur are already telling: Alpha (O) AGS cars in Grandeur Grey and the new Enigmatic Teal, bought for the ventilated seats and the ADAS. NEXA paint has always been a notch deeper than Arena’s, and the Teal in particular has a pearl that shows chips as pale pits, so owners are protecting it from day one. The low, wide bumper and the long flat bonnet catch stones on the ORR; the previous-generation Balenos we see for touch-up all have chipped bonnet noses and sand-blasted lower doors. The ADAS cars carry a radar behind the front grille badge and a camera at the mirror — both stay off the film plan. The bonnet, doors and big flat tailgate film cleanly; the NEXWave grille is the fiddly bit.
What we like
- +Only hatch in its class with Level 2 ADAS and ventilated seats
- +Six airbags standard and a CNG automatic
- +Deep NEXA paint and even gaps
- +More fuel-efficient than the old 1.2 K-series
What we’d change
- –Three-cylinder engine is less refined than the old four
- –Bharat NCAP scores (on the six-airbag car) trail the Dzire
- –ADAS and ventilated seats limited to the Alpha trims
Is the Baleno right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
The AGS, 24.77 km/l claimed, ventilated seats for a Hyderabad summer and the 360° camera make it the most comfortable premium hatch for traffic.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
Adaptive cruise and lane keep on the Alpha (O) take the strain out of Vijayawada highway runs; the three-cylinder is the only thing that reminds you of the price.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Six airbags, ISOFIX, a wide rear bench and rear vents; it is the roomiest hatch Maruti makes, though Bharat NCAP scores are mid-pack.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
Comfort-tuned and sensibly tyred; the Baleno is a cruiser, and the Z12E is about economy rather than response.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
A premium-feeling first car with strong resale and Maruti running costs; the Delta AGS is the sensible pick.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Rear room is the best in the class and the ride is calm, but it is still a hatchback with a low rear seat.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
Tarmac ghats only; the low front bumper scrapes on broken approaches and there is no clearance to spare.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Maruti Suzuki Baleno: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Bonnet nose and the wide low bumper chip first; lower doors sand-blast; the pearl in Enigmatic Teal and Grandeur Grey shows chips as pale pits.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with lower-door strips, leaving the radar badge and mirror camera clear on ADAS cars; AG1 Square full body on the Teal and dark-metallic Alpha cars whose owners bought the colour.
Coverage
Full front standard; add lower doors and rear-arch guards for highway users, full body for the pearl shades.
