The Auto Grid Review
Tata Punch Review: Our Verdict
The Punch is the car that first-time buyers bring to Kondapur, usually within a week of delivery and usually a Pure+ or Adventure AMT in Pristine White or Daytona Grey. The 2026 facelift’s paint is noticeably tidier than the 2021 car — fewer dust nibs, better gloss on the solid white — but the clear coat is still thin on the bonnet and the lower doors. What we repair most: the front bumper’s lower lip (speed-breaker scrapes, not stones), the rear bumper corners from basement pillars, and the C-pillar door handle recess that fingernails chew through within a year. The CNG cars have the tanks under the boot floor, which keeps the boot usable at 210 L but adds weight to the rear springs; the rear bumper sits a little lower and scrapes more often. It is a quick car for us to film; the only fiddly bits are the cladding edges on the wheel arches and the roof rails.
What we like
- +5-star BNCAP in a car under six lakh
- +Twin-cylinder iCNG with AMT keeps the boot usable
- +193 mm clearance and 90-degree doors
- +iTurbo option for those who want pace
What we’d change
- –Thin clear coat on bonnet and lower doors
- –AMT is slow in stop-go compared with a DCA
- –Rear seat is narrow for three
- –Smart-trim waits stretched to 10–12 weeks in August
Is the Punch right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
Tall seating, a tight 4.9 m-class turning circle and the AMT make it the easiest Tata to thread through Ameerpet; CNG AMT keeps running cost very low.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
The 88 PS NA petrol runs out of breath above 100 km/h; the iTurbo helps, but cabin noise and the short wheelbase show on the ORR.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Six airbags, ISOFIX and the top crash score are rare at this price; the 366 L boot is big for the class.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
The 120 PS iTurbo with a 6-speed manual is genuinely lively for a micro SUV, but the chassis is set up for comfort.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Low price, high seating, low insurance, strong resale and Tata’s widest service reach — it is the classic first car for a reason.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Rear legroom and ride polish are not what a chauffeur-driven buyer wants; look at the Harrier.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
Ground clearance and the short overhangs cope with village roads and shallow fords, though it remains front-wheel drive.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Tata Punch: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Front bumper lower lip, bonnet leading edge and the C-pillar door-handle recess damage first; CNG cars scrape the rear bumper more often because they sit lower at the back.
Our recommendation
AG1 front bumper plus bonnet and the handle recesses for most owners; AG1 full-front for Accomplished+ cars with the sunroof and diamond-cut alloys. We add a rear-bumper loading strip on CNG variants.
Coverage
Bumper-and-bonnet package as the entry point; full front with door-handle recess cups and rear-bumper top strip recommended.
