The Auto Grid Review
Hyundai Exter Review: Our Verdict
Exters are regular visitors to the Kondapur bay, mostly HX6 and HX8 AMTs bought as second city cars, with Ranger Khaki and Atlas White the colours we see most and a steady trickle of the matte Ecotronic Grey. The paint is thinner on the lower doors than on the bigger Hyundais and the wheel-arch cladding is an add-on rather than a full-width moulding, so the doors behind the front wheels sand-blast on Shamshabad runs. The boxy nose puts the bumper and the painted bumper garnish square in the stone-chip line, and the roof is flat enough to collect bird-dropping etching in a Hyderabad summer. The silver side-sill garnish scratches; the Knight edition's dark grey garnish hides it better. It is a quick car to film: big flat doors, a simple bonnet and no chrome to mask.
What we like
- +Six airbags, ESC and ISOFIX standard on every variant
- +Only 4-cylinder engine in the micro-SUV class
- +Factory dual-cylinder CNG keeps a usable boot
- +Low running and service costs
What we’d change
- –83 PS feels stretched with four aboard on the ORR
- –AMT is slow compared with a CVT
- –No crash-test rating published
- –Lower-door paint chips easily
Is the Exter right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
Small footprint, high seat, good visibility and the AMT with paddles make it an ideal Hitech City runabout; the sunroof on HX4+ and above is a bonus.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
It will cruise at 100 km/h but the 83 PS engine works hard with passengers and luggage, and there is no ADAS or adaptive cruise.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Standard six airbags and ISOFIX are reassuring, the boot is useful, but the rear seat is narrow for three and no NCAP result has been published.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
Honest handling and a 4-cylinder engine, but there is no power to exploit; this is a practical car, not a fun one.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
HX3 and HX4 are excellent first cars: cheap to run, insure and service, with wireless CarPlay and the full safety kit.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Rear legroom is micro-SUV sized and there are no rear comfort features beyond AC vents.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
Good clearance and short overhangs suit broken roads, but the engine and tyres limit it to tarmac and mild gravel.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Hyundai Exter: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Lower doors behind the front wheels, the front bumper and painted bumper garnish, and the flat roof (etching from bird droppings and sun). Silver side-sill garnish scratches; matte colours mark if polished.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with lower-door and sill strips for most Exters; AG1 Square full body on Knight and matte Ecotronic Grey cars with a matte-finish film.
Coverage
Full front plus lower doors standard; add the roof for cars parked outdoors, and full body for Knight and matte editions.
