The Auto Grid Review
Mahindra Scorpio Classic Review: Our Verdict
Scorpio Classics still come into Kondapur in steady numbers, and the buyer is unmistakable: a Galaxy Grey or Stealth Black S11 bought for presence, often as a second vehicle for a business. Mahindra's paint on the Classic is from an older process than the Scorpio-N and it shows, with a softer clear coat that holeograms after a dealer buff and chips along the bonnet scoop edge and the leading edge of the clamshell bonnet. The tall front end takes stone strikes at bumper, grille and the chrome fender bezels, and the painted side cladding on the S11 is the first thing to scuff in a tight parking slot. The slab-sided body is simple to film, with the only fiddly areas being the bonnet scoop and the tower tail-lamp surrounds. Most owners choose a full-front package and ask us to add the cladding because it is painted rather than black plastic.
What we like
- +Commanding ladder-frame stance and 300 Nm diesel at a lower price than the Scorpio-N
- +Six-speed cable-shift gearbox is lighter than the old Scorpio's
- +ESC, FATC and cruise control standard
- +Flexible 7 or 9 seat layouts
What we’d change
- –Two airbags only and no crash-test rating
- –Manual, rear-wheel drive only; no automatic or 4x4
- –Older-generation cabin, paint and NVH
- –Three colours on the current configurator
Is the Scorpio Classic right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
The high seat gives a clear view over traffic, but at 4456 mm with a manual-only diesel and a 1995 mm roof it is a chore in Banjara Hills parking and basements.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
300 Nm, a six-speed and cruise control make it a relaxed two-lane highway car, but body roll and wind noise are from an earlier decade.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Dual airbags, no ISOFIX listed and side-facing rear seats on the S are hard to justify for a family that can stretch to the Scorpio-N Z4.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
Rear-wheel drive and a torquey diesel give it a certain old-school character, but the soft suspension and slow steering offer no real driver reward.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Robust and cheap to maintain, with strong rural resale, but its size and manual gearbox make it a demanding first car.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Captain chairs on the S11, rear AC vents and a high seating position are the appeal; the ride and refinement are not executive grade.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
A ladder frame, generous clearance and a 60-litre tank suit rough district roads, though there is no 4x4 and the road tyres limit it on wet tracks.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Mahindra Scorpio Classic: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Bonnet scoop edge and clamshell bonnet leading edge chip first; the tall bumper, grille and chrome fender bezels take stone strikes, and the painted side cladding on the S11 scuffs in parking.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front including the bonnet scoop, plus painted-cladding strips on the S11; AG1 Square full body only for dark-colour cars whose owners want the showroom finish kept, because the older clear coat marks easily.
Coverage
Full front and cladding as standard; add doors and rear quarters for dark colours.
