The Auto Grid Review
Toyota Innova Crysta Review: Our Verdict
No vehicle has crossed the Kondapur bay for longer than the Innova, and the Crysta remains the one that fleet owners, wedding-car operators and large Telangana families bring in for full-body film because it will do four lakh kilometres and they want the paint to survive with it. Toyota's Bidadi paint is thick and hard; what fails first is physical, not chemical — the big slab-sided doors take trolley and two-wheeler contact in Ameerpet parking, the long bonnet collects highway chips, and the rear quarter panels behind the wheel arches sand-blast because the car runs on 205 and 215-section tyres with little arch lip. Super White is the fleet colour and hides most of it; the new ZX dual-tone with Attitude Black Mica shows every swirl from the dealer's polish. The 2026 grille is chrome-heavy and pits with pressure washing. It is a slow, simple car to film and the best value full-body job we do.
What we like
- +Proven 2.4 GD diesel and ladder frame — the highest-mileage car we see
- +Thick, hard factory paint
- +Shortest Toyota waiting period in Hyderabad
- +Seven or eight seats with one-touch tumble second row
What we’d change
- –Manual gearbox only — no automatic since 2023
- –Only 3 airbags on G, GX and GX+
- –No ADAS and dated infotainment
- –Diesel-only drivetrain faces CAFE pressure
Is the Innova Crysta right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
A 4.7-metre manual diesel is work in traffic; the high seat and sonar help, but there is no automatic.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
343 Nm at 1,400 rpm, a rock-solid frame and a 5-speed with long gearing make it a tireless Vijayawada and Bengaluru highway tool.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Space for eight, a flat floor and a huge boot with the third row folded; choose VX or ZX for the full seven-airbag set.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
Rear-wheel drive and a torquey diesel are the only things here for a driver; it rolls, understeers and the clutch is heavy.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Too big and too expensive as a first car, though it is the easiest car in India to resell at any mileage.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
The captain-seat 7-seater with the ZX's leather and ambient lighting is still the default chauffeur-driven vehicle across Telangana.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
Ladder frame, rear-wheel drive and tough suspension shrug off broken monsoon roads; it is not 4x4 but it is unbreakable.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Toyota Innova Crysta: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Long bonnet and the chrome-heavy front take highway chips; slab-sided doors take parking contact; rear quarters behind the arches sand-blast on high-mileage cars; the chrome grille pits under pressure washing.
Our recommendation
AG1 Square full body for fleet, wedding and family cars that will run four lakh kilometres — the paint has to last as long as the diesel; AG1 full-front with door-edge and rear-quarter strips for private owners on lower mileage.
Coverage
Full body is the usual Crysta package; full front plus rear quarters and door edges as the minimum.
