The Auto Grid Review
Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Review: Our Verdict
The Hyryder is the Toyota that Kondapur's IT-corridor families actually buy, and the V e-Drive hybrid in Cafe White dual-tone or Speedy Blue is the spec that rolls into our bay most weeks. Being built at Toyota's Bidadi plant rather than Maruti's, the paint is a touch thicker than the Grand Vitara's and the panel gaps are tighter, but the long, gently sloping bonnet and the big front bumper still take the first ORR stone damage, and the plastic-clad wheel arches hide a painted lip that chips. Hybrid owners drive silently in traffic and often cover 25,000 km a year, so the lower doors behind the front wheels sand-blast on the Vijayawada highway. The crystal-acrylic grille is a scratch magnet from pressure washing. It is a well-proportioned car to film — few sharp creases, generous panel edges — and the dual-tone roof seam needs a clean edge rather than a wrapped one.
What we like
- +Strong hybrid with 27.97 km/l claimed and near-silent city running
- +Six airbags, ESP and TPMS on every grade
- +AWD available on the Neo Drive petrol — rare in the segment
- +Toyota reliability and an 8-year hybrid battery warranty
What we’d change
- –Hybrid grades carry the longest waits in some cities
- –Hybrid boot is shallower because of the battery
- –No diesel and no turbo-petrol
- –Crystal grille and wheel-arch lips scratch easily
Is the Urban Cruiser Hyryder right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
The e-Drive hybrid runs on battery for much of a Gachibowli crawl, the 6AT Neo Drive is smooth, and the 360 camera makes basement parking easy.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
Stable and quiet at 100–120 km/h with cruise control standard; the hybrid's 115 PS is adequate rather than brisk for overtakes with a full load.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Six airbags, ISOFIX, a reclining rear seat and rear vents suit a family of four; the hybrid's shallower boot is the only compromise.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
The e-CVT drones under hard throttle and the chassis is set up for comfort; this is an efficiency car, not a driver's car.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
A big first purchase, but running costs are low and Hyryder resale is strong because Toyota hybrids hold value.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
The rear seat reclines and is quiet in EV mode, but legroom is mid-size-SUV sized; an Innova Hycross is the chauffeur-driven Toyota.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
The AWD Neo Drive with hill descent control and roof rails handles Ananthagiri and monsoon tracks that most rivals cannot; the hybrid stays 2WD.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Long bonnet and front bumper take ORR stone chips first; painted wheel-arch lips and lower doors sand-blast on highway runs; the crystal-acrylic grille and dark roofs scratch from pressure washing.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with lower-door strips and wheel-arch lips for commuters; AG1 Square full body on hybrid V grades and dual-tone cars, which owners keep for six to eight years and cover high mileage in.
Coverage
Full front standard; add lower doors, arch lips and the grille surround for highway users; full body for hybrids and dual-tone.
