The Auto Grid Review

Toyota Fortuner Review: Our Verdict

4.3/ 5 · Auto Grid Editorial

The Fortuner is the car our Kondapur bay was built around. Hyderabad buys more of them per capita than almost any city, and the typical order is a 4x2 AT or the 4x4 Neo Drive in Platinum White Pearl or Attitude Black, filmed full body within the first week. Toyota's Bidadi paint is thick and hard, and the pearl white in particular resists swirls, but this is a tall, square SUV with a near-vertical front: the bonnet leading edge, the chrome grille surround and the flat front bumper take highway stone spray like a wall, and the lower doors behind the big 265-section front tyres sand-blast on every Srisailam or Vijayawada run. The wide chrome beltline and door handles pit with hard water, and Attitude Black shows the dealer's delivery polish instantly under our lamps. GR-S cars come with black wheels and gloss-black trim that scratch faster than the paint. It is the most-filmed car in Telangana for good reason: it is kept a decade and resold at a price nobody believes.

What we like

  • +Thick, hard factory paint and bulletproof 2.8 diesel
  • +Seven airbags, VSC and genuine low-range 4x4
  • +Shortest Toyota waiting period in Hyderabad
  • +Best resale value in the segment by a distance

What we’d change

  • –Vertical nose and chrome take stone spray hard
  • –No ADAS on the current generation; third generation due 2027
  • –Cabin tech and 8-inch screen are dated for the price
  • –Ride is firm and the third row is cramped

Is the Fortuner right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored

Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.

City Commuter

10–30 km a day through traffic

A 4.8-metre ladder-frame SUV with a 5.8 m turning radius is hard work in Banjara Hills traffic, though the 6AT and sensors make it manageable.

Highway Cruiser

ORR laps and expressway weekends

500 Nm, a commanding view and a frame that ignores expansion joints make the 4x4 AT a relaxed Bengaluru highway car; wind noise is the only reminder of its shape.

Family First

Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips

Seven airbags, ISOFIX and a huge cabin suit a family, but the third row is for children and the ride is firmer than a Hycross.

Driving Enthusiast

Cares how it steers, not just how it looks

Rear-wheel drive, 500 Nm and paddle shifters give it character, and the GR-S's retuned dampers help, but it is a tall truck in corners.

First-Car Buyer

Budget-conscious and resale-aware

Too large, too thirsty and too expensive as a first car — though its resale makes it a safe place to park money.

Chauffeur-Driven Executive

Judged from the rear seat

The second row is wide and the presence is unmatched, but the ride and refinement trail an Innova Hycross for a chauffeur-driven buyer.

Weekend Explorer

Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads

H4/L4 low range, a locking rear differential, A-TRC and 80 litres of diesel — it is the vehicle for Ananthagiri trails, monsoon fords and Ladakh alike.

Paint Protection

PPF for the Toyota Fortuner: What We Install and Why

Where it takes damage

Near-vertical bonnet edge, chrome grille surround and flat front bumper take highway stone spray hardest; lower doors behind the 265-section tyres sand-blast; chrome beltline pits; Attitude Black and GR-S gloss-black trim show swirls first.

Our recommendation

AG1 Square full body — this is the car most Fortuner owners in Hyderabad film end to end, and the paint has to survive ten years and three lakh kilometres; AG1 full-front with lower-door, sill and A-pillar coverage for 4x2 owners who mostly stay in the city.

Coverage

Full body is the standard Fortuner package; full front plus lower doors, sills and A-pillars as the minimum.

FAQs

Toyota Fortuner: Questions Buyers Ask

Toyota's official Delhi price list (29 October 2026) runs from ₹35.11 lakh for the 2.7L petrol 4x2 AT to ₹50.97 lakh for the GR-S 4x4 AT ex-showroom; the 2.8 diesel 4x2 MT is ₹35.75 lakh and the 4x4 AT Neo Drive 48V is ₹43.55 lakh, with Platinum White Pearl adding ₹20,000. The 2026 Leader Edition is priced by dealers.

About one month per CarDekho's 14 September 2026 dealer survey — the same as Bengaluru, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Kolkata — while Delhi quoted two months and Mumbai, Lucknow and Patna three.

Launched 2 June 2025, it pairs the 2.8 diesel 6AT 4x4 with a 48V belt-integrated starter generator and lithium-ion battery for smart idle start-stop, regenerative braking and torque assist, plus Multi-Terrain Select, a 360-degree camera and a wireless charger.

Toyota South Africa has confirmed a global unveiling of the third-generation Fortuner on 1 December 2026; Toyota Kirloskar Motor has not announced an India date, and reports expect a 2027 launch. The current car remains on sale.

The 2.8 4x2 AT is the Hyderabad default and holds value best; take the 4x4 AT Neo Drive 48V if you drive ghats or monsoon roads, and the GR-S only if you want the look — it has the same engine.

It is the most-filmed car in our bay: the vertical nose, chrome and lower doors take highway damage hard and owners keep the car a decade, so AG1 Square full body is our standard Fortuner recommendation, with full front plus lower doors as the minimum. Message Auto Grid on WhatsApp for a plan for your grade and colour.
