The Auto Grid Review
Toyota Hilux Review: Our Verdict
The Hilux reaches Kondapur as a lifestyle purchase — a VX 4x4 in Sulphur Metallic or Emotional Red for a farmhouse near Shamirpet or a weekend at Pocharam — and it is filmed because owners know what gravel does to a 5.3-metre truck. The ninth-generation body uses the same Bidadi paint process as the Fortuner, thick and even, but a pickup's geometry works against it: the bed sides and tailgate scratch from loading before the first week is out, the rear mudguards and the long rear doors sit directly in the spray from the front tyres, and the Cyber Sumo nose is a flat wall to highway stone. The hexagonal side steps are tough but trap grit against the sills. It is a long, simple-surfaced vehicle to film; the bed rails and the tailgate top edge are where the extra coverage matters, and the LED headlamp housings on the VX are worth protecting.
What we like
- +Ninth-generation body with 12.3-inch screen and 7 airbags on every grade
- +Proven 2.8 diesel, 500 Nm and low-range 4x4 with a rear diff lock
- +One-month waiting period in most cities
- +Toyota durability for a vehicle that works and plays
What we’d change
- –Diesel automatic only — no manual or petrol
- –Bed, tailgate and rear doors take damage from loading and spray
- –5.3-metre length and 6.3 m turning radius in the city
- –Attitude Black limited to the VX 4x4
Is the Hilux right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
A 5.3-metre pickup with a 6.3 m turning radius and leaf-spring rear is not a commuter; parking in Hyderabad basements is the daily problem.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
500 Nm, cruise control on the VX and the hydraulic engine mounts make it a relaxed expressway truck, with an 80-litre tank for long legs.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Seven airbags and ISOFIX are standard and the double cab seats five, but the bed is open and the ride is firm unladen.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
Rear-drive, torque-rich and happy to slide on gravel in 2WD, with a short-geared L4 for crawling; on tarmac it is a truck.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
A specialised 5.3-metre diesel pickup that is expensive to insure, run and park in Hyderabad; it is nobody's sensible first car.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
The rear bench is upright and the ride unladen is bouncy; this is not a chauffeur-driven vehicle.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
H4/L4, a rear diff lock, Multi-Terrain Select, downhill assist and a bed for gear — the most capable off-road Toyota below a Land Cruiser.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Toyota Hilux: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Bed sides, bed rails and tailgate top edge scratch from loading; rear mudguards and rear doors take tyre spray; the flat Cyber Sumo nose and bonnet edge take highway stone; side steps trap grit against the sills.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front plus rear doors, rear mudguards and a tailgate panel for working and touring owners; AG1 Square full body including bed rails on VX lifestyle trucks in Emotional Red or Sulphur Metallic where the paint is part of the purchase.
Coverage
Full front plus rear doors, mudguards and tailgate as the standard pickup package; full body with bed rails for lifestyle VX owners.
