The Auto Grid Review
Mahindra XEV 9e Review: Our Verdict
The XEV 9e is the largest-value car we film regularly in Kondapur, and the typical order is a Pack Three 79 kWh in Tango Red or Desert Myst, delivered to a buyer trading up from a German saloon. Mahindra's INGLO paint is hard and holds a gloss well, so our prep work is light; the exposure is the long, low nose with its wide intake, the illuminated logo housing, the deploying door handles and the piano-black arch cladding, all of which chip or scuff in daily use. The 4.79-metre length and the coupé roof mean the rear quarter panels and the tailgate's lower edge take gravel from the R19 wheels on Shamshabad runs. Cineluxe cars in Satin Black and Satin White are a different conversation: satin cannot be polished, so we recommend covering them before the first wash. It is a big install with complex curves at the rear haunches, but the result is the best-looking Mahindra we send out.
What we like
- +First car to score 32/32 for adult protection in Bharat NCAP
- +656 km MIDC range, 20-minute fast charging and a 663-litre boot
- +Triple screens, Harman Kardon Atmos, AR head-up display and auto park
- +Lifetime battery warranty for first private owners
What we’d change
- –Wall charger and installation are extra, and the Pack Two 79 kWh price is not published
- –Satin Cineluxe paint cannot be polished if scratched
- –4.79 m length and a 10 m turning circle in city parking
- –Waits of up to eight months reported in Mumbai
Is the XEV 9e right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
Single-pedal drive, auto park and the 360-degree camera help, but 4.79 metres of coupé is a lot of car for Banjara Hills lanes and apartment basements.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
656 km MIDC, 20-minute charging, adaptive suspension, Level 2+ ADAS with lane centring and a whisper-quiet cabin at 130 km/h make it the long-distance EV of the range.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
A perfect adult safety score, seven airbags on Pack Three, ISOFIX and a 663-litre boot plus a 150-litre frunk; rear headroom under the coupé roof is the only compromise.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
286 PS to the rear wheels and 0–100 km/h in 6.8 seconds with Race mode are quick, but the BE 6 is the sharper tool; the 9e is tuned for calm.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
A thirty-lakh, 4.8-metre, 286 PS rear-driven EV is not a first car by any sensible measure; insurance alone would cover a year of running a XUV 3XO.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Multi-step reclining rear seat, rear sunshade, the quietest cabin Mahindra makes, Atmos audio and the Cineluxe lounge interior make it the chauffeur-driven Mahindra.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
207 mm of clearance covers a ghat road, but the long overhangs, low nose and road tyres keep it on tarmac.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Mahindra XEV 9e: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Long low nose and wide lower intake collect ORR stones; the illuminated logo housing, deploying door handles and piano-black arch cladding scuff in daily use, the rear quarters and tailgate lower edge take gravel from the R19 wheels, and Cineluxe satin paint cannot be polished.
Our recommendation
AG1 Square full body for Pack Three and Cineluxe cars, in a matte-compatible film for the satin colours, because owners keep these cars for years and the compound rear curves are where scratches show; AG1 full-front with sill and cladding strips for Pack One and Two.
Coverage
Full body for Pack Three and Cineluxe; full front, sills and rear quarters for lower packs.
