Defender Waiting Period
Typical across India: CarWale previously reported waits stretching up to 32 weeks (roughly 7–8 months) for CBU imports in Mumbai, varying by dealer, variant and colour. JLR's local CKD assembly of the Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE from its Pune plant, confirmed in late October 2026 with deliveries targeted from 15 November 2026, is expected to shorten lead times for that specific trim, but Land Rover India has not yet published a new post-assembly waiting-period figure. · Hyderabad dealers: No Hyderabad-specific dealer survey found as of this writing; check current stock with a Hyderabad Land Rover dealer. (as of 4 Nov 2026)

The Auto Grid Review
Land Rover Defender Review: Our Verdict
The Defender is still a rare sight at our Kondapur bay, but the locally-assembled 110 has started changing that — a ₹34-lakh price cut brings in buyers who'd never have considered the fully-imported car. Its slab-sided, flat-panel body is genuinely easy to film well, but the exposed exterior door hinges, the bonnet-mounted model script and the front/rear skid plates are all raw, unpainted or textured surfaces that our installers have to mask around carefully rather than just run a blade over — rush that step and you either leave a gap or nick the lettering. The front bumper's lower skid plate and the sills take the worst of speed-breaker and off-road scraping, and owners who actually use the Terrain Response modes off-road come back with stone rash on the lower doors within weeks. OCTA owners are a different crowd entirely — far lower volume, far more particular about the bonnet graphics and raised air intake staying scratch-free, and they expect full-body coverage as a given at that price point.
What we like
- +Locally-assembled 110 X-Dynamic HSE is now genuinely attainable at ₹99 lakh, a first for this nameplate in India
- +5-star Euro NCAP rating on the core 110 body style
- +Three distinct engines (P300/P400/D300) and real off-road hardware, not just styling
- +635 PS OCTA gives the range a genuine flagship with its own identity
What we’d change
- –90 and 130 remain fully-imported CBU, so they miss the 110's price cut entirely
- –No official ARAI/claimed-efficiency figure published for any Defender engine in India
- –Exposed hinges, skid plates and bonnet lettering need careful masking during PPF installation
- –Waiting-period data has not caught up with the October 2026 local-assembly change
Is the Defender right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
It's comfortable and easy to place in traffic for its size, but a Defender is overkill and expensive for a pure city commute when a smaller SUV would do the job.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
Air suspension on the P400 and D300 settles the Defender nicely on the Hyderabad–Bengaluru expressway stretches, with real torque on tap from the diesel for overtaking.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
The 5-star Euro NCAP score, ISOFIX anchors and the optional 5+2 or the 130's full 8-seat layout make this a genuinely safe, spacious family off-roader, not just a styling exercise.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
The OCTA's 635 PS V8 and sharpened chassis give it real pace, but even the regular Defender rewards enthusiasts who care about genuine 4x4 capability over outright cornering grip.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Price, running costs and sheer size rule this out as anyone's first car, even with the locally-assembled 110's sharper entry price.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Rear seat comfort and refinement are good on the 110 and 130, but an executive wanting a chauffeur-driven image car will usually look at the Range Rover Sport or Velar instead.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
Permanent AWD, Terrain Response 2, genuine wading depth and skid plates make this one of the few SUVs at any price in India that can actually back up its off-road styling on a ghat trail.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Land Rover Defender: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The front bumper's lower skid plate and the sills take the brunt of speed-breaker and off-road scraping, while the flat bonnet and door panels pick up highway stone chips readily; the exposed exterior door hinges, the bonnet-mounted model script lettering and the raised air intake/bonnet graphics on OCTA are raw or textured details that need careful masking rather than a straight cut.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with sill and skid-plate coverage as the baseline for every Defender that comes through our bay, given how often the lower panels take real off-road damage; AG1 Square full body for OCTA and OCTA Edition One owners, where the bonnet graphics and raised air intake are the point of the car and masking around the exterior hinges and model script needs extra time.
Coverage
Full front, sills and skid plates standard; add the rear wheel arches and tailgate for owners doing regular off-road or ghat-road trips, and full body for OCTA buyers.

FAQs
Land Rover Defender: Questions Buyers Ask
Land Rover India's own 'price from' figures, as of 4 November 2026, are ₹99 lakh for the locally-assembled Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE 2.0-litre petrol, ₹1.18 crore for the 110's 3.0-litre petrol or diesel, ₹1.43 crore for the Defender 90, ₹1.46 crore for the eight-seat Defender 130, and ₹2.59 crore to ₹2.79 crore for the fully-imported Defender OCTA and OCTA Edition One, all ex-showroom.
Jaguar Land Rover started assembling the Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE from CKD (completely knocked down) kits shipped from Slovakia to its Pune plant in late October 2026, cutting the entry price by up to ₹34 lakh compared with the earlier fully-imported car, with deliveries confirmed from 15 November 2026. The 90, 130 and OCTA are not part of this change and remain fully-imported CBU models.
The Defender 110 was tested by Euro NCAP in 2020 and scored a 5-star rating overall, with 85% for adult occupant protection, 85% for child occupant protection and 79% for safety assist. It has not been separately tested by Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP, which is standard for this class of CBU-adjacent luxury SUV, but the Euro NCAP result is widely cited as applicable to the India-spec car.
On the locally-assembled 110 X-Dynamic HSE, the entry 2.0-litre P300 petrol is the value pick at ₹99 lakh; the 3.0-litre D300 diesel's 650 Nm suits long highway and off-road use better, and the 3.0-litre P400 petrol gives nearly the same torque with a smoother, quieter engine — both are priced identically at ₹1.18 crore, so it comes down to whether you prefer diesel running costs or petrol refinement.
Land Rover India does not publish an ARAI or WLTP-claimed mileage figure for the Defender on its own site. Given the size, weight and permanent AWD system, expect real-world city mileage in the single digits for the petrols and low double digits for the diesel — we'd treat any third-party mileage claim for this car with caution until JLR publishes an official number.
CarWale previously reported waits of up to 32 weeks (about 7–8 months) in Mumbai for the fully-imported car, varying by variant, colour and dealer. The October 2026 move to local CKD assembly for the 110 X-Dynamic HSE should shorten that specific trim's wait, but Land Rover India has not published an updated figure yet — confirm current lead times with your dealer, especially for the 90, 130 and OCTA, which remain fully imported.
They're different shapes of the same job: the Defender is the boxy, hard-edged off-roader with exposed rivets and external hinges, built for genuine 4x4 use, while the Discovery is the rounder, more family-oriented 7-seat SUV sold now only as the Gemini and Tempest editions. The locally-assembled Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE petrol actually undercuts the entry Discovery Gemini on price; choose the Defender for off-road presence and a wider engine choice, the Discovery for a plusher, more practical family SUV.
We don't track theft statistics ourselves, but keyless-entry relay theft has been a well-documented risk across Land Rover's modern range globally, and insurers price premium SUVs accordingly. We'd recommend a secondary mechanical immobiliser or a Faraday pouch for the key fob as sensible, low-cost precautions rather than relying on the factory system alone — ask your dealer what JLR India currently bundles on the locally-assembled 110.
Yes — the front skid plate, sills and bonnet take the worst of highway stone chips and off-road scraping on this car more than most SUVs its size, since owners genuinely drive it the way it's styled. We run a full-front-plus-sills-and-skid-plate AG1 package as standard, with full-body coverage for OCTA buyers.
Indicatively ₹1.19 crore–₹3.49 crore on-road in Hyderabad: ex-showroom ₹99.00 lakh–₹2.79 crore (Delhi, 4 Nov 2026) plus Telangana life tax (18%–21%), first-year insurance and registration. Dealer quotes vary with insurance add-ons and accessories.
The top variant is the Defender 110 OCTA Edition One (Petrol, 8-speed automatic, permanent AWD) at ₹2.79 crore ex-showroom Delhi; the base model is the Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE P300 (2.0L petrol) (Petrol, 8-speed automatic, permanent AWD) at ₹99.00 lakh. 7 variants in all, as of 4 Nov 2026.
Defender: Full-size luxury off-road SUV, ₹99.00 lakh – ₹2.79 crore ex-showroom, Petrol/Diesel, Auto Grid rating 4.4/5. Land Cruiser 300: Luxury ladder-frame flagship SUV, ₹2.18 crore – ₹2.25 crore ex-showroom, Diesel, rated 4.6/5. See the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 page for its full variant list and our verdict.
