The Auto Grid Review

Jeep Wrangler Review: Our Verdict

4.3/ 5 · Auto Grid Editorial

The Wrangler is the one car at our Kondapur bay owners genuinely use the way Jeep intends — doors and roof come off for real off-road weekends, and that exposes the whole cabin surround and door hinges to dust, grit and sun in a way no other car on our bay sees. The flat bonnet and square wheel arches film cleanly, but the removable hard-top's seals and the Rubicon's rock rails take real scuffing from trail use that a highway-only SUV never would. Owners who actually wheel it understand protection isn't optional; this is one car where we rarely have to convince anyone.

What we like

  • +Genuine body-on-frame off-road capability with locking differentials on Rubicon
  • +270 PS turbo-petrol with a proper 8-speed torque-converter automatic
  • +Removable doors, windscreen and hard-top — a unique format in India
  • +Standard 4x4, ADAS and 6 airbags on both trims

What we’d change

  • –No Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP test published for the India-spec car
  • –No official exterior colour palette published for India as of this writing
  • –Fuel efficiency of 10.6–11.4 km/l is among the lowest in its price bracket
  • –Only two trims and no direct same-segment rival to cross-shop against

Is the Wrangler right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored

Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.

City Commuter

10–30 km a day through traffic

Its size, turning circle and fuel economy make it an impractical daily city commuter despite the smooth 8-speed automatic.

Highway Cruiser

ORR laps and expressway weekends

270 PS and 400 Nm cruise comfortably, but the boxy shape and off-road tyres bring more wind noise at expressway speeds than a crossover-based SUV.

Family First

Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips

6 airbags and ADAS are welcome, but the lack of a published India crash-test score and a firm, trail-tuned ride make it a niche family choice.

Driving Enthusiast

Cares how it steers, not just how it looks

Locking differentials, a disconnecting sway bar on Rubicon and genuine low-range 4x4 make this the most capable off-road enthusiast's car in Jeep's India range.

First-Car Buyer

Budget-conscious and resale-aware

Price, fuel costs and its specialised off-road format rule it out as a first car for almost any buyer.

Chauffeur-Driven Executive

Judged from the rear seat

A removable-roof off-roader is the opposite of a chauffeur-driven executive brief; look at a Range Rover or a Mercedes-Benz GLS instead.

Weekend Explorer

Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads

237 mm ground clearance, 864 mm water-wading and genuine locking differentials make this the benchmark weekend-trail SUV on sale in India today.

Paint Protection

PPF for the Jeep Wrangler: What We Install and Why

Where it takes damage

The removable hard-top's seals, door hinges and the whole cabin surround are exposed to dust and grit far more than a sealed SUV, and the Rubicon's rock rails and front fender flares pick up real trail scuffing that a highway-only car never sees.

Our recommendation

AG1 Square full-body film for every Wrangler given how many owners actually off-road it; reinforce the rock rails, fender flares and door-hinge surrounds on Rubicon trims specifically.

Coverage

Full body standard, with reinforced coverage on rock rails and fender flares for Rubicon owners who trail-drive regularly.

FAQs

Jeep Wrangler: Questions Buyers Ask

Autocar India (last updated 17 October 2026) lists the Wrangler at ₹77.13 lakh for the Unlimited and ₹82.49 lakh for the Rubicon, ex-showroom; Jeep's own dealer configurator still shows older, lower figures as of this writing.

Not really — Autocar India notes the Wrangler has no direct same-segment competitor, positioning it as an alternative to the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class, or a serious step up from the Mahindra Thar Roxx and Force Gurkha for buyers who want more power and refinement.

Yes — the doors, windscreen and hard-top are all removable, Wrangler's signature modular design, which is why the cabin surround and hinge points need careful protection against dust and UV exposure.

Yes — Jeep locally assembles the Wrangler at its Ranjangaon plant in Maharashtra and sells it in two trims, Unlimited and Rubicon, both with 4x4 and an 8-speed automatic as standard.

No — Rubicon is the range-topping trim, adding front and rear locking differentials, a disconnecting sway bar, 17-inch off-road wheels, rock rails, skid plates and Nappa leather over the Unlimited's standard kit.

The Thar Roxx costs a fraction of the Wrangler and offers genuine off-road ability for most Indian trails; the Wrangler adds more power, a locking-differential Rubicon trim, removable doors and roof, and a stronger off-road pedigree for buyers who can pay for it.

No Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP result has been published for the India-spec Wrangler as of October 2026 — it is a low-volume import-assembled model and typically isn't submitted for testing.

Its removable roof seals and the Rubicon's rock rails and fender flares take genuine trail wear, so a full-body AG1 Square film is our standard Wrangler recommendation. Message Auto Grid on WhatsApp for a plan by trim.
