The Auto Grid Review
Jeep Compass Review: Our Verdict
The Compass is a steady, if infrequent, visitor to our Kondapur bay — buyers who choose it over a Harrier or a Tucson tend to care about the badge and keep the car longer, so they protect it properly from day one. The seven-slot grille and the squared wheel arches are the first things to chip on the ORR; the lower bumper apron on the diesel-only range takes genuine stone damage given how often these owners drive long distance. Panel fit is tight and the paint holds up well under film, which makes the Compass one of the cleaner jobs on our bay despite its lower volumes meaning fewer repeat customers to compare notes with.
What we like
- +Strong 170 PS/350 Nm diesel with a genuine 9-speed torque-converter automatic
- +Locally assembled with reasonable parts availability despite low volumes
- +4x4 available on the range-topping AT trim
- +Jeep brand cachet against mainstream rivals
What we’d change
- –No Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP test published for the India-spec car
- –6 airbags reserved for Limited trim and above, not the full range
- –Diesel-only engine line-up, no petrol or hybrid option
- –Jeep's own price pages have shown inconsistent figures across sources this run
Is the Compass right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
The 9-speed AT is smooth in traffic, but the Compass's size and turning circle are a step behind sub-4m SUVs for tight city driving.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
350 Nm of diesel torque and a genuine 9-speed torque converter make this one of the more composed executive-SUV highway cruisers in its price band.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
6 airbags from the Limited trim up are reassuring, but the lack of a published India crash-test score is a real gap for safety-first family buyers.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
The diesel pulls strongly in the mid-range and the 4x4 AT adds genuine light off-road ability, though it's tuned for comfort over outright driver feedback.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Price, running costs and Jeep's thinner service network than Tata or Hyundai make this a harder sell as a first car.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
The panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats and dual-zone climate control on Model S trims suit a chauffeur-driven brief well.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
178 mm ground clearance plus a genuine 4x4 AT top trim with Hill Descent Control make it a credible weekend-trail SUV, not just a highway cruiser.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Jeep Compass: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The seven-slot grille surround and squared front wheel arches take the first stone chips on the ORR, and the lower bumper apron shows genuine highway damage given how far these owners typically drive.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with lower-door and wheel-arch strips for every Compass, since this is a highway-heavy car by owner profile; add the 4x4 AT's underbody-adjacent panels for buyers who use the off-road drive modes.
Coverage
Full front standard; add rear-wheel-arch guards for 4x4 AT owners who actually use the terrain modes.
Jeep Compass vs Harrier vs Meridian vs Creta

FAQs
Jeep Compass: Questions Buyers Ask
Jeep's India lineup overview lists the Compass from ₹17.99 lakh to ₹30.70 lakh ex-showroom (Autocar India, last updated 26 October 2026); individual dealer and configurator pages show some variation by trim, which buyers should confirm locally.
The India-spec Compass has not been tested by Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP as of October 2026. A 2017 Euro NCAP 5-star result exists for an earlier-generation export Compass and is not directly applicable to today's India model.
A dealer survey by Ackodrive (22 January 2026) put it at roughly 90 days across major Indian cities; given Jeep's low volumes this varies by dealer, so confirm locally before booking.
It's a strong highway and light off-road SUV with a genuine 9-speed automatic and 4x4 on top trims, but it's cross-shopped against sharper-value rivals like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos at a lower price, and against the Tata Harrier and Skoda Kodiaq closer to its own price band — weigh the Jeep badge and diesel-only drivetrain against those before deciding.
The Harrier is cheaper, petrol-free but well-equipped with ADAS across more trims and a much wider Tata service network; the Compass counters with a genuine 9-speed torque-converter automatic, 4x4 on the top trim and Jeep's off-road pedigree.
Longitude gives the panoramic sunroof and dual-zone climate control without the Limited trim's premium. The Model S(O) 4x4 AT is the only variant with the full off-road 4x4 drivetrain and the complete feature list together.
They share the same 170 PS diesel and chassis. The Compass is the smaller, 5-seat version for sharper handling and a lower price; the Meridian adds a longer body with a genuine 7-seat option and the new sliding second-row seats, for roughly ₹5–7 lakh more.
No — the India-spec Compass is diesel-only, with a 170 PS 2.0-litre Multijet II available with a 6-speed manual or a 9-speed automatic.
Its grille surround and front wheel arches take the first ORR stone chips, so a full-front AG1 film with lower-door strips is our standard Compass recommendation. Message Auto Grid on WhatsApp for a plan by trim.
Indicatively ₹21.92 lakh–₹38.13 lakh on-road in Hyderabad: ex-showroom ₹18.29 lakh–₹30.70 lakh (Delhi, 29 Oct 2026) plus Telangana life tax (17%–18%), first-year insurance and registration. Dealer quotes vary with insurance add-ons and accessories.
Jeep's claimed figures: 2.0 Multijet II diesel — MT — 15.3 km/l; 2.0 Multijet II diesel — AT / AT 4x4 — 17.3 km/l (FWD AT). Real-world figures depend on traffic, load and driving style.
The top variant is the Model S(O) 4x4 AT (Diesel, 9-speed AT) at ₹30.70 lakh ex-showroom Delhi; the base model is the Sport (Diesel, 6-speed MT) at ₹18.29 lakh. 10 variants in all, as of 29 Oct 2026.
Ground clearance 178 mm, 5 seats, length 4405 mm (Jeep official specification).
