The Auto Grid Review
Force Gurkha Review: Our Verdict
The Gurkha is a cult off-road buy, and the few that reach our Kondapur bay are almost always already carrying trail scars by the time the owner thinks about protection. The flat bonnet, square wheel arches and the air-intake snorkel are the panels that take the first hit on rocky trails, and the untested crash rating doesn't seem to put off buyers who choose this car specifically for its 4WD with locking differentials rather than for daily duty. The boxy panels film cleanly, but owners who off-road regularly need the rock-exposed lower body covered, not just the usual highway-chip zones.
What we like
- +Genuine ladder-frame 4WD with front and rear locking differentials
- +233 mm ground clearance and strong approach/departure angles
- +Choice of a compact 3-door or a practical 7-seat 5-door
- +Among the most affordable genuine off-roaders on sale in India
What we’d change
- –Not tested by Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP
- –Only 2 airbags and a single diesel-manual powertrain, no automatic or petrol option
- –Only 4 colour choices published
- –Force's dealer and service network is far thinner than Mahindra's or Maruti's
Is the Gurkha right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
A tall, ladder-frame off-roader with a manual-only gearbox is a poor fit for daily stop-go city driving.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
140 PS and a 5-speed manual feel stretched at sustained highway speeds, and cabin refinement trails crossover-based SUVs.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
The 5-door's 7-seat layout is genuinely practical, but only 2 airbags and no published crash-test score make it a hard recommend for safety-first families.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
Front and rear locking differentials, a proper ladder frame and 233 mm clearance make this one of the most capable genuine off-roaders money can buy in India.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
A specialised manual-only 4WD off-roader with a thin service network isn't a sensible first car for most buyers.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
A bare-bones off-road cabin with only 2 airbags doesn't suit a chauffeur-driven brief at all.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
This is built for exactly this persona — genuine 4WD, locking diffs and 233 mm of clearance for serious weekend trails.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Force Gurkha: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The flat bonnet, square wheel arches and the air-intake snorkel take the first hits on rocky trails, and the lower doors and rock-exposed sills see genuine scrape damage that a highway-only SUV never experiences.
Our recommendation
AG1 Square full-body film for every Gurkha that sees trail use, with reinforced coverage on the snorkel, wheel arches and lower sills where rock contact is most likely.
Coverage
Full body standard; reinforce the snorkel, wheel-arch lips and rock-exposed sills for serious off-road use.

Jeep
Wrangler
The Jeep Wrangler is Jeep India's flagship off-roader, locally assembled at Ranjangaon with a 270 PS 2.0-litre turbo-petrol, an 8-speed torque-converter automatic and standard 4x4 across both trims. Removable doors, windscreen and hard-top carry over the model's signature off-road format, with 237 mm ground clearance and 864 mm water-wading capability.
Maruti Suzuki
Jimny
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny is a five-door, four-seat ladder-frame off-roader sold through NEXA with a 1462 cc K15B petrol (5MT or 4AT), AllGrip Pro part-time 4WD with a low-range transfer case and three-link rigid axles front and rear. It is Maruti’s only true off-roader and is sold in Zeta PRO and Alpha PRO trims with six airbags standard.
FAQs
Force Gurkha: Questions Buyers Ask
Force Motors lists the Gurkha 3 Door at ₹16,51,881 and the Gurkha 5 Door at ₹17,83,366, ex-showroom, excluding insurance, registration and road tax, per forcemotors.com as of 29 October 2026.
No — the Gurkha has not been tested by Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP as of October 2026.
Force's official FAQ states an ARAI-certified 15 km/l with the air conditioning on, for the single 140 PS 2.6-litre diesel engine.
If you genuinely off-road, yes — front and rear locking differentials and a proper ladder frame at this price are rare. If you want a daily-usable SUV with an automatic option, a crash-test rating or a wider service network, the Mahindra Thar or Thar Roxx is the easier recommendation.
Both run genuine 4WD with locking differentials. The Thar and Thar Roxx offer petrol and automatic options and a far wider dealer network; the Gurkha is diesel-manual only but is often considered the more hardcore trail vehicle of the two.
The Jimny is more road-friendly, automatic-available and backed by Maruti's huge service network. The Gurkha counters with front and rear locking differentials, more ground clearance and a more serious trail pedigree, at the cost of refinement and daily usability.
No — the current-generation 3-door and 5-door Gurkha, launched in 2024, remains on sale as of October 2026, per Force Motors' official price list.
Its snorkel, wheel arches and lower sills take real rock-trail damage, so a full-body AG1 Square film with reinforced lower coverage is our standard Gurkha recommendation. Message Auto Grid on WhatsApp for a plan.
