The Auto Grid Review
BMW iX1 Review: Our Verdict
The iX1 LWB is the first fully electric BMW most of our Kondapur customers own, and it comes in near one-spec simplicity — every one we've filmed is the eDrive20L M Sport, usually in Mineral White or M Carbon Black. The sealed-off faux kidney grille is the panel that gets the most attention: it's a single large glossy surface with no cooling intakes behind it, which means every dealer-prep swirl and every stone chip shows up starkly against the gloss black mesh, more visibly than on a conventional grille. The lower bumper and front splitter pick up the same stone-chip pattern as the related petrol X1, since both share a platform, while the charging flap on the front-left wing is a spot we always clear and film separately so it stays flush and scratch-free. EV owners in Hyderabad tend to keep these cars longer and drive them harder on daily errands than their petrol BMWs, so the cumulative wear on the lower doors and sills from kerb contact in tight basement parking is the main thing we correct before filming.
What we like
- +Locally assembled pricing from ₹54.70 lakh undercuts most imported premium electric SUVs
- +546 km claimed MIDC range is among the best in its class
- +8-year/1,60,000 km battery warranty, extendable to 10 years
- +Level 2 ADAS and an 8-airbag count standard on the single trim
What we’d change
- –Only one variant and one battery size on offer — no lower-range, lower-price option
- –FWD-only; no xDrive all-wheel-drive version sold in India
- –Faux kidney grille shows swirl marks and chips more visibly than a conventional grille
- –8.6-second 0-100 km/h is modest next to some electric rivals at this price
Is the iX1 right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
One-pedal driving, instant torque and a 546 km range make this an easy, low-stress daily commuter that rarely needs a weekday charge.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
175 km/h top speed and 130 kW DC fast charging support ORR trips, but the FWD layout and 8.6-second 0-100 time are modest for sustained high-speed cruising.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
A 5-star Euro NCAP rating shared with the X1 platform, 8 airbags and a panoramic roof make this a genuinely safe, comfortable family EV, though cabin space trails a conventional mid-size SUV.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
Front-wheel drive and a comfort-tuned chassis mean this is built for efficient commuting, not cornering; look elsewhere in the range for driver engagement.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
At ₹54.70 lakh ex-showroom this is far outside any first-car budget, EV running-cost savings notwithstanding.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
The long-wheelbase body gives genuinely good rear legroom for the segment, but this is a compact SUV, not a chauffeur-focused sedan like the 5 Series LWB.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
FWD-only and road-biased tyres limit this to tarmac weekend trips; range anxiety on remote ghat routes with sparse charging is a real factor.
Paint Protection
PPF for the BMW iX1: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The sealed gloss-black faux kidney grille shows stone chips and dealer-prep swirl marks more starkly than a conventional grille with cooling intakes behind it; the front bumper and splitter chip on the same pattern as the related petrol X1; the front-left charging flap needs careful, separate filming to stay flush and scratch-free.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with dedicated charging-flap coverage as standard on every eDrive20L, since the single-trim lineup makes panel geometry identical across cars; AG1 Square full body for owners who want the Mineral White or M Carbon Black finish fully protected against daily basement-parking kerb contact.
Coverage
Full front plus charging-flap and door-sill coverage standard; add rear wheel-arch guards for owners doing regular highway charging-stop trips.

FAQs
BMW iX1: Questions Buyers Ask
BMW India's configurator lists the iX1 LWB from ₹54,70,000 ex-showroom for the single eDrive20L M Sport variant, confirmed on bmw.in's all-models and special-offers pages as of 6 November 2026.
BMW's latest India brochure (September 2026 update) claims a range of up to 546 km on the MIDC test cycle from the 66.4 kWh battery; an earlier brochure version cited 531 km, so figures have been revised upward with testing updates.
No. BMW India sells the iX1 LWB only as the front-wheel-drive eDrive20L with a single PMS electric motor producing 204 hp; the global xDrive30 all-wheel-drive version is not offered here.
Reporting indicates the iX1 shares its 5-star Euro NCAP rating with the related BMW X1, with Euro NCAP running additional tests to confirm the electric powertrain meets the same standard. BMW has not published a separate Bharat NCAP result for the India-built LWB car.
Yes. The iX1 LWB sold in India is a fully electric SUV with no petrol or diesel option — it uses a single front-mounted electric motor and a 66.4 kWh battery. The separate BMW X1 nameplate is the petrol/diesel version of the same body.
Yes. Parking Assistant Plus with a 360-degree Surround View camera is standard on the single eDrive20L M Sport variant sold in India, per BMW's iX1 LWB brochure.
The Sealion 7 is a larger, more powerful electric SUV with a bigger battery and a lower starting price than the iX1; the BMW counters with badge value, a more compact footprint for city use and BMW's dealer and service network. Buyers cross-shopping these are usually choosing between raw EV performance (Sealion 7) and brand plus everyday usability (iX1).
The Model Y is a larger SUV with a longer range and Tesla's Supercharger access, typically at a higher price than the iX1; the iX1's smaller size, locally assembled pricing and BMW ownership experience are its main draws for Indian buyers cross-shopping the two.
Its sealed gloss-black grille shows stone chips and prep swirls more visibly than a conventional grille, and the charging flap needs careful separate filming to stay flush, so a full-front AG1 film with charging-flap coverage is our standard package.
