The Auto Grid Review
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe Review: Our Verdict
The 2 Series Gran Coupe is the cheapest way into a BMW badge in India, and that shows in who buys it — mostly first-time luxury buyers moving up from a premium hatchback, almost always in Black Sapphire or Alpine White, and almost always the 218 M Sport rather than the Pro. The low, frameless-window silhouette means the front bumper sits close to the ground, and it's the first panel to show stone chips on Hyderabad's speed breakers — this car scrapes its chin more than any other BMW we see. The M Sport's black high-gloss grille surround and side skirts pick up fine scratches from hand washes faster than the painted panels do, which is the opposite problem to most cars we film. Because it's front-wheel drive and built on a shared platform with the 1 Series hatchback globally, the four-star Euro NCAP reassessment from November 2025 is worth knowing about before you compare it to the rear-drive 3 Series on safety alone.
What we like
- +Cheapest genuine BMW sedan on sale in India at ₹45.80 lakh ex-showroom
- +Curved Display cabin and OS9 feel far ahead of its price bracket
- +Locally assembled at Chennai, keeping pricing competitive against imported rivals
- +Frameless windows and M Sport styling give real road presence for the segment
What we’d change
- –Front bumper scrapes on speed breakers more readily than taller BMWs
- –Euro NCAP rating was downgraded to 4 stars in a November 2025 reassessment
- –Petrol-only — no diesel option, unlike some rivals
- –M Sport Pro's ₹2.10 lakh premium is mostly sunroof and audio, not substance
Is the 2 Series Gran Coupe right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
The 7-speed DCT and compact dimensions make it an easy daily driver, though the low front bumper demands care over Hyderabad's speed breakers.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
156 hp and the Sport Boost function are enough for confident overtaking, but this is a smaller, lighter car than the 3 Series and feels it on long expressway stretches.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
A 430-litre boot and the 2025 four-star Euro NCAP reassessment make this a reasonable but not top-tier choice for a young family's first luxury car.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
The dual-clutch gearbox and paddle shifters add genuine engagement for a front-wheel-drive entry BMW, though it's no substitute for the M340i's inline-six.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
It's the most affordable new BMW in India, but at ₹45.80 lakh it's still a stretch as an actual first car rather than a second or third vehicle.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Rear space is compact-sedan sized despite the Gran Coupe's four-door coupe looks; an executive wanting rear-seat comfort should look at the 3 Series LWB instead.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
Low ground clearance and a sporty front bumper rule out anything beyond smooth tarmac weekend drives.
Paint Protection
PPF for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The low front bumper and chin spoiler are the first panels to scrape on speed breakers and steep driveways; the M Sport's black high-gloss grille surround and side skirts show fine wash-induced scratches quickly; frameless window trims pick up marks from repeated opening against the seal.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with chin and side-skirt coverage as standard, since this is the BMW most likely to scrape its lowest point in daily Hyderabad driving; we specifically reinforce the chin spoiler edge on M Sport Pro cars.
Coverage
Full front plus chin spoiler and side-skirt strips standard; add mirror caps and door-edge guards for owners parking in tight apartment basements.

FAQs
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe: Questions Buyers Ask
BMW India's configurator lists the 2 Series Gran Coupe from ₹45,80,000 (218 M Sport) to ₹48,90,000 (218 M Sport Pro) ex-showroom as of 6 November 2026, confirmed on the official bmw.in pricing pages.
BMW sells the second-generation 2 Series Gran Coupe in India exclusively with the 1.5-litre TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder petrol producing 156 hp and 230 Nm, paired with a 7-speed Steptronic dual-clutch automatic — no diesel is offered.
We could not find a dated 2026 dealer-reported waiting period specific to the second-generation Gran Coupe; Autocar India's general BMW 2 Series FAQ cites 3-4 months without a publication date, so we are not repeating that figure as current. Confirm directly with your dealer.
No longer at the top rating. The related BMW 1 Series platform, on which the Gran Coupe's safety rating is based, was reassessed by Euro NCAP in November 2025 and downgraded from 5 stars to 4 stars, driven by its adult occupant protection score.
For buyers wanting an entry-point BMW with real styling and tech presence, yes — the Curved Display cabin and dual-clutch petrol punch above the price. It's worth it less so for outright safety bragging rights after the November 2025 four-star Euro NCAP reassessment, or for rear-seat space, where a 3 Series LWB does more for roughly ₹15 lakh more.
For a first BMW it's a strong choice — the Curved Display cabin, M Sport styling and a dual-clutch petrol feel properly premium for the money. The trade-offs are a four-star (not five-star) Euro NCAP rating after the November 2025 reassessment and a low front bumper that scrapes on tall speed breakers, which we'd flag honestly to any buyer.
Both are entry-luxury compact sedans around the ₹45-50 lakh mark with broadly similar petrol power outputs; the BMW's dual-clutch gearbox and M Sport-as-standard styling are its strongest selling points against the Mercedes' badge and interior finish. We'd suggest comparing both on a test drive rather than on spec sheet alone.
These sit in different segments despite cross-shopping searches — the Camry is a larger, hybrid-only executive sedan built for rear-seat comfort, while the 2 Series Gran Coupe is a compact, driver-focused four-door coupe with a petrol-only dual-clutch drivetrain. Buyers choosing between them are usually deciding between space (Camry) and badge-plus-handling (BMW).
Its low front bumper and chin spoiler scrape on speed breakers more than any other BMW we see in Hyderabad, so a full-front AG1 film with chin coverage is our standard recommendation from day one. Message Auto Grid on WhatsApp for a plan matched to your trim.
Indicatively ₹56.57 lakh–₹60.70 lakh on-road in Hyderabad: ex-showroom ₹46.90 lakh–₹48.90 lakh (Delhi, 6 Nov 2026) plus Telangana life tax (18%–20%), first-year insurance and registration. Dealer quotes vary with insurance add-ons and accessories.
BMW's claimed figures: 1.5L TwinPower Turbo petrol (218) — 16.35 km/l (ARAI). Real-world figures depend on traffic, load and driving style.
The top variant is the 218 M Sport Pro (Petrol, 7-speed Steptronic DCT) at ₹48.90 lakh ex-showroom Delhi; the base model is the 218 M Sport (Petrol, 7-speed Steptronic DCT) at ₹46.90 lakh. 2 variants in all, as of 6 Nov 2026.
2 Series Gran Coupe: Entry-luxury compact sedan, ₹46.90 lakh – ₹48.90 lakh ex-showroom, Petrol, Auto Grid rating 3.9/5. C-Class: Entry-luxury sedan, ₹59.90 lakh – ₹65.60 lakh ex-showroom, Petrol/Diesel, rated 4.3/5. See the Mercedes-Benz C-Class page for its full variant list and our verdict.
