BMW 7 Series — price 2026, specs, rivals & review

The facelifted BMW 7 Series arrived in India in September 2026 as a single 740 M Sport petrol variant — a 3.0-litre inline-6 with 48V mild-hybrid assist, 400 hp, 580 Nm and an 8-speed automatic. It rivals the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Audi A8 L, and sits below BMW's fully electric i7 M70 in the same body.

The Auto Grid Review

BMW 7 Series Review: Our Verdict

4.4/ 5 · Auto Grid Editorial

We see far fewer 7 Series than 3 or 5 Series cars, but the facelifted 740 M Sport that has come through Kondapur so far wears paint that's noticeably more resilient to stone chips than its predecessor, likely down to a thicker factory clear coat on the Neue Klasse-era cars. The Iconic Glow kidney grille's crystal-effect elements and the long, flat doors are the panels we watch most closely — the grille surround picks up swirl marks from dealer-prep buffing almost every single time, and the automatic soft-close doors mean owners rarely touch the paint themselves, so most of the damage we correct is pre-delivery rather than owner-caused. At ₹1.95 crore ex-showroom this is a car bought for the back seat, and every one we've filmed has had the rear doors and C-pillar treated with the same care as the bonnet — chauffeurs notice wrap seams faster than owners do. On-road price in Delhi lands around ₹2.27 crore once registration and taxes are added, a gap buyers moving from an S-Class are already used to budgeting for.

What we like

  • +₹43 lakh cheaper than the equivalent Mercedes-Benz S-Class, per Autocar India
  • +Executive Lounge rear seating with massage and 4-way lumbar is genuinely chauffeur-grade
  • +Thicker factory clear coat on the facelift takes PPF cleanly
  • +Panoramic iDrive and the 8K Theatre Screen are unmatched at this price in India

What we’d change

  • –Single 740 M Sport petrol variant — the diesel 740d has been dropped for India
  • –₹1.95 crore ex-showroom puts it in a very thin ownership segment
  • –No independently published Bharat NCAP or Euro NCAP rating for this generation
  • –Dealer-prep swirls on the Iconic Glow grille surround are near-universal on delivery

Is the 7 Series right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored

Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.

City Commuter

10–30 km a day through traffic

A 5,395 mm flagship with chauffeur-focused rear seating is not built for the owner to drive themselves through daily traffic.

Highway Cruiser

ORR laps and expressway weekends

The adaptive air suspension and Integral Active Steering make long expressway stints genuinely restful, though this is a car to be driven in, not to drive hard.

Family First

Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips

Six airbags and extensive passive safety are standard, but BMW has not published an independent crash-test star rating for this generation in India, which we flag honestly to safety-conscious buyers.

Driving Enthusiast

Cares how it steers, not just how it looks

400 hp and a 5.4-second 0-100 time are quick for a car this size, but the 7 Series is tuned for comfort and isolation, not driver engagement; look at the M340i or an M5 instead.

First-Car Buyer

Budget-conscious and resale-aware

At ₹1.95 crore ex-showroom, with running costs and depreciation to match, this is nowhere near a realistic first-car budget for anyone.

Chauffeur-Driven Executive

Judged from the rear seat

This is the single best chauffeur-driven car we see in Hyderabad — Executive Lounge seating, massage function and the Theatre Screen are built entirely around the rear passenger.

Weekend Explorer

Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads

A low, air-suspended flagship sedan built for chauffeur duty has no business anywhere off smooth tarmac or a well-kept driveway.

Paint Protection

PPF for the BMW 7 Series: What We Install and Why

Where it takes damage

The Iconic Glow kidney grille's crystal-effect elements and surrounding chrome pick up dealer-prep swirl marks on nearly every delivery; the long flat doors and C-pillar are the panels chauffeurs and owners scrutinise hardest; the front apron takes stone chips on expressway runs despite the thicker factory clear coat.

Our recommendation

AG1 Square full body as the default recommendation on a car bought for appearance and rear-seat presentation as much as for driving; we pay particular attention to correcting grille-surround swirls before the film goes down.

Coverage

Full body standard, including door edges, C-pillar and the rear bumper under the automatic tailgate, which takes repeated light contact during boot loading.

FAQs

BMW 7 Series: Questions Buyers Ask

The facelifted BMW 7 Series launched in India on 11 September 2026 at ₹1.95 crore ex-showroom for the sole 740 M Sport petrol variant, per Autocar India and Cars24's launch coverage.

No. The previous generation's 740d diesel has been dropped; BMW India now sells the 7 Series only as the 740 M Sport, a 3.0-litre petrol with 48V mild-hybrid assist. A fully electric i7 M70 xDrive is sold as a separate model range.

Autocar India lists the on-road price in Delhi at approximately ₹2.27 crore for the 740 M Sport, roughly ₹32 lakh over the ex-showroom figure once registration, road tax and insurance are included.

BMW has not published an independent Bharat NCAP, Global NCAP or Euro NCAP star rating for the current G70-generation 7 Series, so a direct safety-rating comparison with the S-Class isn't possible from public crash-test data; both cars carry extensive standard passive safety equipment.

Yes. The facelifted BMW 7 Series is available to order in India as the 740 M Sport petrol, launched 11 September 2026 and locally assembled at BMW Plant Chennai; the fully electric i7 M70 xDrive is sold alongside it as a separate model range.

BMW has not published an ARAI-certified or official combined fuel-economy figure for the facelifted 740 M Sport's 3.0-litre petrol engine in India as of 6 November 2026; Autocar India's own estimate puts it in the 10-12 km/l range, but we are not treating an unofficial estimate as a confirmed spec.

The standard 7 Series Sedan sold as the 740 M Sport is petrol, not electric. BMW sells a fully electric version of the same body as a separate model, the i7 (including the high-performance i7 M70 xDrive), alongside the petrol 740 M Sport in India.

Yes. Adaptive 2-axle air suspension is standard on the 740 M Sport, automatically adjusting damping to the road surface, and it works with Integral Active Steering for rear-wheel steering up to 3.5 degrees, per BMW India's official 7 Series Sedan page.

The Iconic Glow grille surround shows dealer-prep swirl marks on almost every car we've inspected, and the long doors are scrutinised closely by chauffeurs and owners alike, so we recommend a full-body AG1 film rather than a partial package on this car. Message Auto Grid on WhatsApp for a plan.
