The Auto Grid Review

BMW 3 Series Review: Our Verdict

4.1/ 5 · Auto Grid Editorial

Fewer 3 Series come through our Kondapur bay than the mass-market cars, but when they do it's almost always a 330Li M Sport in Carbon Black or Mineral White, and the paint tells its own story. BMW's clear coat on the LWB is harder than Tata's or Hyundai's, which is good news long-term but means a dealer-fit film has to be laid down carefully — it doesn't forgive stretched or badly cut edges the way a softer coat would. The long doors on the stretched wheelbase are the single biggest surface we work on; owners who use the 320Ld for daily highway runs show stone chips low on the front bumper and across the bonnet lip within the first few thousand kilometres, right where the Active Air Stream kidney grille meets the apron. The M340i xDrive cars we've filmed are nearly always kept for weekend driving rather than daily commuting, and their larger 19-inch M wheels and black high-gloss trim pick up kerb rash on the rear doors sooner than the paint itself fails. On-road price in Hyderabad, as with most BMWs, runs a clear 12-15% over the ex-showroom figure once registration and insurance land, which is the first thing every 3 Series buyer asks us about before they ask about protection.

What we like

  • +330Li and 320Ld LWB give rear-seat room a standard 3 Series can't match
  • +M340i xDrive is a genuine 374 hp performance sedan built in Chennai
  • +Curved Display cabin and Driving Assistant feel a generation ahead of segment rivals
  • +Harder clear coat than most mainstream rivals, filmed cleanly

What we’d change

  • –Only three trims on sale — no base-spec SWB petrol anymore
  • –Diesel 320Ld carries a premium over the Audi A4 diesel equivalent
  • –Stone chips concentrate hard on the front bumper and bonnet lip
  • –Service costs and parts pricing sit well above the mainstream luxury segment

Is the 3 Series right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored

Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.

City Commuter

10–30 km a day through traffic

The 330Li's 8-speed auto is smooth in traffic, but the LWB's longer turning radius and the M340i's stiffer ride make this a car you'd rather park than thread through Madhapur lanes daily.

Highway Cruiser

ORR laps and expressway weekends

The 320Ld's 400 Nm and the M340i's inline-six make this one of the best ORR cruisers in its price band, with adaptive dampers soaking up Shamshabad's expansion joints at 120 km/h.

Family First

Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips

The LWB's extra legroom helps rear passengers, but a 5-star Euro NCAP result is from the 2019 standard-wheelbase car, not an India-specific crash test, and the 480-litre boot is modest for a family that travels with luggage.

Driving Enthusiast

Cares how it steers, not just how it looks

The M340i xDrive is the real draw — a 374 hp inline-six, M Sport differential and 4.4-second 0-100 time that few rivals at this price can touch.

First-Car Buyer

Budget-conscious and resale-aware

Nobody's first car at this price point; BMW India service costs and depreciation off a luxury sedan make this a poor choice for a first-time owner.

Chauffeur-Driven Executive

Judged from the rear seat

The LWB's rear seat, extended legroom and quiet cabin suit a chauffeur-driven brief well, though the 5 Series LWB does the job with more space again.

Weekend Explorer

Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads

Low-profile run-flat tyres and 135 mm ground clearance mean this stays on sealed roads; it's not built for anything beyond a smooth ghat drive.

Paint Protection

PPF for the BMW 3 Series: What We Install and Why

Where it takes damage

Front bumper and bonnet lip take the first stone chips on the LWB's longer nose; the long rear doors pick up kerb rash and door-edge chips from tight parking; chrome kidney grille surrounds and M Sport black high-gloss trim show swirl marks from dealer-prep buffing.

Our recommendation

AG1 full-front with bonnet and mirror caps as the minimum for 330Li/320Ld commuters; AG1 Square full body for M340i xDrive owners who want the paint and the black trim protected together, since the harder clear coat holds a film cleanly once correctly prepped.

Coverage

Full front standard on all three trims; add door-edge guards and rear wheel-arch strips for LWB cars doing regular highway runs, full body for the M340i.

FAQs

BMW 3 Series: Questions Buyers Ask

BMW India's configurator lists the 3 Series LWB from ₹62,70,000 (330Li M Sport petrol) to ₹64,20,000 (320Ld M Sport diesel), with the M340i xDrive performance sedan from ₹77,80,000, all ex-showroom as of 6 November 2026 on bmw.in.

For regular trims, yes — BMW India sells the mainstream 330Li and 320Ld exclusively in the stretched LWB body with 110 mm more wheelbase than the global standard car. The M340i xDrive is the only standard-wheelbase 3 Series variant still offered.

On-road prices for BMWs in Hyderabad typically run 12-15% over the ex-showroom figure once road tax, registration and insurance are added; for the 330Li M Sport's ₹62.70 lakh ex-showroom price that puts the on-road figure in the ₹70-72 lakh range, though exact RTO charges vary by buyer category.

The G20-generation 3 Series scored a 5-star Euro NCAP rating when tested in 2019 (97% adult occupant, 87% child occupant). That test covered the global standard-wheelbase sedan; BMW has not published a separate Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP result for the India-spec 3 Series LWB.

The Audi A4 typically undercuts the 330Li on ex-showroom price and offers quattro all-wheel drive on some markets' trims, while the 3 Series LWB counters with its stretched rear cabin and the M340i's extra performance headroom that the A4 range doesn't match in India. We'd weigh dealer network and test-drive feel over the spec sheet alone.

Both are petrol-and-diesel luxury sedans around the ₹60-65 lakh ex-showroom mark; the 3 Series LWB's extra 110mm wheelbase gives it a clear rear-space edge over the standard-wheelbase C-Class in India, while the M340i xDrive out-powers the C300. Your dealer test-drive should decide it — we only see the paint and panel gaps, not the drive.

No. BMW India currently sells three 3 Series trims — 330Li M Sport, 320Ld M Sport and M340i xDrive — all live on bmw.in's configurator as of 6 November 2026. The regular standard-wheelbase 330i petrol has been discontinued in favour of the LWB.

Most buyers we see choose the 330Li M Sport petrol for the balance of performance and running cost; the 320Ld M Sport suits owners doing heavy highway mileage; the M340i xDrive is for buyers who want a genuine 374 hp performance sedan and are prepared to pay ₹77.80 lakh for it.

BMW's official specification material for the 3 Series LWB and M340i does not list ventilated front seats as standard or optional equipment in India; that feature appears on higher BMW nameplates such as the 5 Series LWB.

The front bumper and bonnet lip take the first stone chips on the LWB's long nose, and the rear doors pick up kerb rash quickly in tight parking, so a full-front AG1 film is our standard recommendation from day one. Message Auto Grid on WhatsApp for a plan matched to your trim.

BMW's claimed figures: 2.0L TwinPower Turbo petrol (330Li) — 15.39 km/l (ARAI); 2.0L TwinPower Turbo diesel (320Ld) — 19.61 km/l (ARAI); 3.0L M TwinPower Turbo inline-6 petrol (M340i xDrive) — 13.02 km/l (combined, BMW). Real-world figures depend on traffic, load and driving style.

The top variant is the M340i xDrive (Petrol, 8-speed Steptronic Sport AT) at ₹77.80 lakh ex-showroom Delhi; the base model is the 330Li M Sport (Petrol, 8-speed Steptronic Sport AT) at ₹62.70 lakh. 3 variants in all, as of 6 Nov 2026.

3 Series: Luxury mid-size sedan, ₹62.70 lakh – ₹77.80 lakh ex-showroom, Petrol/Diesel, Auto Grid rating 4.1/5. 5 Series: Luxury executive sedan, ₹77.00 lakh ex-showroom, Petrol, rated 4.3/5. See the BMW 5 Series page for its full variant list and our verdict.

Ground clearance 135 mm, boot space 480 litres, 5 seats, length 4819 mm (BMW official specification).
