The Auto Grid Review

Honda City Review: Our Verdict

4.1/ 5 · Auto Grid Editorial

The City is the sedan every detailer in Hyderabad knows on sight, and the May facelift hasn't changed what we see when one rolls into the Kondapur bay. The front bumper and the long, flat bonnet take the brunt of ORR stone chips, and the Lunar Silver and Platinum White cars show swirl marks from dealer-stage polishing more readily than the darker shades. The e:HEV's extra weight over the front axle means we see slightly more front-tyre-driven chipping on the lower air dam than on the petrol car. The boot lid on the e:HEV is a frequent request for film too, since owners load it carefully around the smaller 306-litre hybrid boot and still manage to scuff the lower edge. Honda's clear coat here is a notch harder than Tata's, so paint correction before filming is usually light. It remains the default choice for buyers cross-shopping the Verna and the new Slavia, and our bay sees roughly as many ZX+ petrols as e:HEVs book in for protection in the first service year.

What we like

  • +Only strong-hybrid sedan in its class, with a genuine 27+ kmpl
  • +Honda SENSING ADAS from the V grade, not locked to the top trim
  • +Refined engine and a CVT that doesn't drone under load
  • +Strong resale and the widest dealer network among the sedan rivals

What we’d change

  • –Still untested by Bharat NCAP as of October 2026
  • –Hybrid boot shrinks to 306 litres against the petrol's 506
  • –No ground clearance figure published, and it rides low for Indian roads
  • –e:HEV commands a steep ₹5–7 lakh premium over the top petrol

Is the City right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored

Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.

City Commuter

10–30 km a day through traffic

The CVT is smooth in stop-go traffic and the e:HEV's EV-only crawl helps in jams, though the low nose means care over speed breakers on Hyderabad's inner roads.

Highway Cruiser

ORR laps and expressway weekends

145 Nm of petrol torque and a stable chassis make it a relaxed expressway car; the e:HEV adds effortless overtaking without a fuel-economy penalty on long runs.

Family First

Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips

Six airbags and ISOFIX are reassuring, but with no Bharat NCAP score yet and a shrunken hybrid boot, families cross-shopping the Verna will want to wait for a rating.

Driving Enthusiast

Cares how it steers, not just how it looks

The petrol's high-rev VTEC character rewards a keen driver more than the hybrid, but neither variant gets a manual on the hybrid or any sport-tuned chassis option.

First-Car Buyer

Budget-conscious and resale-aware

Easy controls, a light clutch on the MT and Honda's strong resale value make the SV and V grades sensible first sedans for a new driver.

Chauffeur-Driven Executive

Judged from the rear seat

Rear seat comfort and cabin refinement are a clear step above segment norms, and the e:HEV's silent EV mode is genuinely limousine-like at low speed.

Weekend Explorer

Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads

Low ground clearance and road-biased tyres mean the City is built for tarmac, not the broken ghat roads a weekend explorer actually wants to cover.

Paint Protection

PPF for the Honda City: What We Install and Why

Where it takes damage

The low front bumper and flat bonnet take the first stone chips on ORR and highway stretches; the e:HEV's heavier nose shows slightly more wear on the lower air dam, and dealer-stage polishing swirls show up fastest on Lunar Silver and Platinum White cars.

Our recommendation

AG1 full-front film with a sill strip for daily commuters; AG1 Square full body for e:HEV owners who want the hybrid's resale premium protected through its longer ownership cycle.

Coverage

Full front and mirror caps standard; add rocker panels and a boot-lip edge guard for the e:HEV given how often that lower boot edge gets scuffed loading the smaller cargo bay.

FAQs

Honda City: Questions Buyers Ask

Honda's own price checker lists the City from ₹11.99 lakh (SV MT petrol) to ₹20.99 lakh (ZX+ e:HEV hybrid) ex-showroom Delhi, as of the 22 May 2026 launch price list, current on hondacarindia.com as of 29 October 2026.

The petrol is ARAI-rated at 17.77 kmpl (MT) and 17.97 kmpl (CVT); the e:HEV strong hybrid claims 27.26 kmpl, both as certified under CMVR Rule 115 and published on Honda's official City pages.

The current facelifted City has not been independently crash-tested by Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP as of October 2026 (confirmed via Autocar India's Honda safety round-up). It carries 6 airbags, ESC and ISOFIX as standard across the range.

The V CVT is the value pick with Honda SENSING ADAS and the bigger touchscreen; step up to ZX+ e:HEV only if the lower running cost and hybrid refinement matter more than the ₹5–7 lakh premium and smaller boot.

The Verna offers a more powerful turbo-petrol option, while the City counters with a genuine strong-hybrid e:HEV variant and better-than-average Honda resale value. Choose the Verna for outright turbo performance, the City for hybrid efficiency and refinement.

The Slavia and Virtus are built on the European MQB-A0-IN platform with a turbo-petrol and a torque-converter automatic, and both carry a 5-star Global NCAP rating the City's current facelift does not have. The City counters with the segment's only strong hybrid.

Yes — Honda's official specifications confirm both the 1.5L i-VTEC petrol and the e:HEV hybrid are compliant with E20 (20% ethanol-blended) petrol.

Its front bumper and bonnet take the most stone-chip damage on Hyderabad's highways, and the e:HEV's boot lip scuffs from everyday loading, so a full-front AG1 film is our standard recommendation. Message Auto Grid on WhatsApp for a City-specific plan.

Indicatively ₹14.40 lakh–₹26.10 lakh on-road in Hyderabad: ex-showroom ₹12.00 lakh–₹21.00 lakh (Delhi, 29 Oct 2026) plus Telangana life tax (17%–18%), first-year insurance and registration. Dealer quotes vary with insurance add-ons and accessories.

The top variant is the ZX+ e:HEV (Hybrid, e-CVT) at ₹21.00 lakh ex-showroom Delhi; the base model is the SV MT (Petrol, 6-speed MT) at ₹12.00 lakh. 8 variants in all, as of 29 Oct 2026.
