The Auto Grid Review
Volkswagen Taigun Review: Our Verdict
The facelifted Taigun is the VW SUV we see most often in Kondapur, usually a GT Line or Topline in Candy White or Carbon Steel. The front bumper's lower intake and the sculpted bonnet crease take the first stone chips on ORR and Shamshabad-highway runs, and the new illuminated front logo sits close enough to parking-sensor height that it picks up scuffs from tight mall basements. The Infinity LED tail-lamp cluster at the rear is a known scratch-prone zone on cars that reverse into narrow slots often. Panel fit and paint depth are consistently good across the range — the MQB-A0-IN platform's German-spec body tolerances show in how evenly the clear coat sits even on the cheaper Comfortline trim. The 1.5 TSI DSG cars that come in for detailing are almost always driven hard on the ORR, and their front bumpers and lower doors show the most road rash of anything we see from this brand.
What we like
- +5-star Global NCAP rating with 6 airbags standard across the range
- +1.5 TSI DSG is the quickest, most refined engine in its class
- +Consistent, German-spec paint and panel quality
- +Genuinely useful 8-speed automatic on the 1.0 TSI, best-in-segment
What we’d change
- –Front bumper and illuminated logo scuff easily in tight parking
- –385-litre boot trails the Creta and Seltos
- –Rear headroom is average for the segment
- –Service costs run higher than Hyundai/Kia equivalents
Is the Taigun right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
The 1.0 TSI with the new 8-speed automatic is relaxed in stop-go traffic, and 188 mm ground clearance shrugs off Hyderabad's broken stretches.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
The 1.5 TSI DSG's 250 Nm and the Taigun's planted high-speed ride make it one of the best SUVs in its class for ORR laps.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Six airbags standard and a 5-star GNCAP rating make it a safe family pick, though the 385-litre boot is smaller than rivals for luggage-heavy trips.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
The 1.5 TSI DSG's mid-range punch and the MQB chassis's composure reward a keen driver more than most mid-size SUVs here.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Comfortline and Highline are easy to drive and well-equipped, but resale value and service costs trail the Creta and Seltos.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
A quiet, composed ride on the Topline and GT Plus, but rear legroom is SUV-class average rather than class-leading.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
188 mm ground clearance and a well-sorted chassis handle broken roads confidently, though it remains front-wheel drive only.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Volkswagen Taigun: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The front bumper's lower air intake and bonnet crease take the first stone chips on highway runs; the illuminated front VW logo and the Infinity LED tail-lamp cluster scuff easily in tight parking and frequent reversing.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with logo and tail-lamp cluster protection for daily commuters; AG1 Square full body for GT Line/GT Plus owners who want the contrast black elements and illuminated badging kept scratch-free.
Coverage
Full front standard; add tail-lamp and door-edge guards for city parking, full body for GT Line/GT Plus/Topline cars.
