The Auto Grid Review
Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line Review: Our Verdict
The Tiguan R-Line is a rare sight in our Kondapur bay — a handful of cars a year, always the sole fully-loaded trim, almost always Oryx White or Grenadilla Black. Being a CBU import, the paint and panel quality are visibly a step above the locally-assembled Taigun: deeper clear coat, tighter shut lines, and the 19-inch wheels' diamond-cut faces that need careful masking during PPF work. The big, flat doors and the matrix-LED headlamp housings are straightforward to film, but the blacked-out R-Line grille and bumper trim show fine scratches against the gloss finish faster than the body paint. Owners who bring these in have usually done their homework — they know this is a CBU car with a longer parts lead time than the Taigun, so they tend to protect it more thoroughly from day one rather than waiting for the first stone chip.
What we like
- +204 PS 2.0 TSI with genuine 4MOTION all-wheel drive
- +Level 2 ADAS and 9 airbags, among the most comprehensive safety kits in its class
- +CBU build quality — tighter panel gaps and deeper paint than locally-assembled SUVs
- +652-litre boot is generous for the segment
What we’d change
- –Single trim, single colour-accent choice — no configurability
- –CBU import means longer parts and service lead times
- –₹47-lakh starting price puts it well above the Taigun and Tayron Life
- –12.58 km/l ARAI mileage trails hybrid-powered rivals
Is the Tiguan right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
Capable but oversized and pricey for pure city duty — the 4MOTION AWD and DSG are wasted in stop-go traffic.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
The 2.0 TSI's 320 Nm and 4MOTION grip make it one of the most composed SUVs on an ORR run or an expressway trip.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
9 airbags, a 652-litre boot and a Euro NCAP 5-star-tested platform make it a genuinely safe, spacious family SUV, if a premium-priced one.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
204 PS, 4MOTION AWD and the R-Line's sharper tuning make this the most driver-focused Tiguan sold in India.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Price, size and import running costs put it well outside first-car territory for most Indian buyers.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
A refined, quiet cabin with a head-up display and massage front seats; rear space is good though it is driver-focused rather than chauffeur-focused.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
176 mm ground clearance and genuine 4MOTION AWD handle broken ghat roads with real confidence, unlike the front-wheel-drive Taigun.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The blacked-out R-Line grille and bumper trim show fine scratches against their gloss finish faster than the body paint; the matrix-LED headlamp housings and the diamond-cut 19-inch wheel faces need careful masking during protection work.
Our recommendation
AG1 Square full body is our standard recommendation given the CBU import's longer parts lead time and the R-Line's gloss-black trim — full-front alone leaves too much of the car's distinctive styling exposed.
Coverage
Full body standard for this trim, with wheel-face film on the diamond-cut alloys as an add-on.

FAQs
Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line: Questions Buyers Ask
The Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line, Volkswagen India's sole Tiguan trim, is priced at ₹47,11,013 ex-showroom as of 30 October 2026, per the official volkswagen.co.in price page.
No. The Tiguan R-Line is a fully-imported (CBU) SUV; Volkswagen India's locally-assembled SUVs are the Taigun and Tayron.
The current-generation Tiguan has a 5-star rating under Euro NCAP's 2024 protocol (Adult 33.5/40, Child 43.2/49) from its European testing; it has not been separately crash-tested by Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP for the India-spec car.
One. The Tiguan is sold in India only as the fully-loaded R-Line with the 2.0 TSI, 7-speed DSG and 4MOTION all-wheel drive.
Its gloss-black R-Line grille and bumper trim are the panels we see scratched most often, so we recommend AG1 Square full-body coverage rather than a partial package, especially given the CBU import's longer parts lead time. Message Auto Grid on WhatsApp for a plan.
The Tiguan R-Line is the pricier, CBU-imported flagship with 204 PS and genuine 4MOTION all-wheel drive; the locally-assembled Kodiaq undercuts it on price with a similar engine and offers a dedicated RS performance variant the Tiguan doesn't have.
Taigun is the locally-assembled mid-size SUV starting under ₹11 lakh; Tayron is the locally-assembled 5/7-seat premium SUV from ₹42 lakh; Tiguan is the fully-imported (CBU) flagship SUV at ₹47.11 lakh with the most power and 4MOTION all-wheel drive.
Yes, for buyers who want a genuinely capable, well-equipped premium SUV — 204 PS, real 4MOTION all-wheel drive, Level 2 ADAS and 9 airbags are a strong package, though its single trim and CBU import status mean no configurability and longer parts lead times.
Volkswagen's official India specification for the Tiguan R-Line does not list a sunroof as standard equipment; it is not offered on this generation's India-spec car.
Indicatively ₹56.83 lakh–₹58.47 lakh on-road in Hyderabad: ex-showroom ₹47.11 lakh (Delhi, 30 Oct 2026) plus Telangana life tax (18%–20%), first-year insurance and registration. Dealer quotes vary with insurance add-ons and accessories.
Volkswagen's claimed figures: 2.0L TSI EVO turbo-petrol — 12.58 km/l (ARAI). Real-world figures depend on traffic, load and driving style.
Ground clearance 176 mm, boot space 652 litres, 5 seats, length 4539 mm (Volkswagen official specification).
