The Auto Grid Review
Volkswagen Tayron Review: Our Verdict
The Tayron is still new enough that we've only had a handful through the Kondapur bay, mostly R-Line cars in Grenadilla Black or Oryx White booked by families wanting a step up from the Taigun. Being locally assembled rather than a CBU, the paint is closer in feel to the Taigun than the imported Tiguan, and the bonnet and front bumper on the big SUV take stone chips quickly on highway runs given its size and speed. The gesture-controlled tailgate's sensor strip is a spot we're careful to mask during PPF work, and the 19-inch Coventry alloys on the R-Line scuff against kerbs more than owners expect given the car's premium positioning. The second-row captain-feel reclining seats and the 8-mode massage front seats on the R-Line make this one of the more comfortable premium SUVs we've driven onto the lift, and the panoramic sunroof frame is a common spot for small chips from gravel thrown up on Outer Ring Road construction stretches.
What we like
- +204 PS 2.0 TSI with genuine 4MOTION all-wheel drive on both trims
- +Level 2 ADAS with 14 features and 9 airbags standard on R-Line
- +Flexible 5-seat Life or 5/7-seat R-Line layouts under one nameplate
- +Locally assembled, so parts and service lead times are shorter than the CBU Tiguan
What we’d change
- –345-litre boot on the 7-seat R-Line configuration is tight with the third row in use
- –No official ground clearance figure published yet
- –No Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP result published for the India-spec Tayron
- –Premium pricing puts it close to the CBU Tiguan
Is the Tayron right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
Capable but large for pure city use; the 4MOTION AWD and DSG are more suited to highway runs than tight Madhapur lanes.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
The 2.0 TSI's 320 Nm and 4MOTION grip make long ORR and expressway runs genuinely relaxed and composed.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
9 airbags, Level 2 ADAS and the flexible 5/7-seat R-Line layout make this one of the most capable family SUVs in its price band, even without a published crash-test score yet.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
204 PS and 4MOTION give it real pace for its size, but the Tayron is tuned for comfort and space over outright driver engagement.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Price, size and premium running costs put it well outside first-car territory for most Indian buyers.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
The R-Line's reclining second-row seats, 3-zone climate and head-up display make it a genuinely chauffeur-friendly premium SUV.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
4MOTION all-wheel drive and the Tayron's size handle long family road trips well, though a laden ground-clearance figure isn't yet published.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Volkswagen Tayron: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The large front bumper and bonnet take stone chips quickly on highway runs given the SUV's size and speed; the gesture-controlled tailgate's sensor strip and the R-Line's 19-inch Coventry alloys need careful protection against kerb scuffs.
Our recommendation
AG1 Square full body for R-Line cars given the premium positioning and the gesture tailgate sensor area; AG1 full-front with sill guards is the minimum for Life-trim buyers who use it mainly on better roads.
Coverage
Full body recommended for R-Line; full front and sill guards as the baseline for Life trim, with wheel-face film for the alloys.
Volkswagen Tayron vs Kodiaq vs Tiguan vs Fortuner
Cross-shopped against: Škoda Kodiaq, Jeep Meridian, Toyota Fortuner, Kia Sorento.

FAQs
Volkswagen Tayron: Questions Buyers Ask
Volkswagen's official launch pricing lists the 5-seat Tayron Life at ₹41,99,000 ex-showroom (July 2026) and the 5/7-seat Tayron R-Line at ₹46,99,000 ex-showroom introductory price (February 2026), both unchanged on the official site as of 30 October 2026.
The Tayron R-Line can be configured with up to 7 seats across three rows; the Life trim is a dedicated 5-seater focused on cabin space and boot volume.
The Tayron replaces the Tiguan Allspace in Volkswagen India's line-up, built on the newer MQB EVO platform.
No Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP crash-test result has been published for the India-spec Tayron as of this writing. It carries 9 airbags, Level 2 ADAS and electronic stability control as standard safety equipment on the R-Line.
Its front bumper and bonnet take the most stone-chip damage on highway runs given the SUV's size, and the gesture tailgate sensor strip needs careful masking, so we recommend AG1 Square full-body coverage for R-Line cars. Message Auto Grid on WhatsApp for a plan.
Both share the same MQB EVO platform, 204 PS 2.0 TSI engine and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. The Tayron undercuts the Kodiaq on price at launch and offers the 5-seat Life trim; the Kodiaq has a longer India track record and a dedicated RS performance variant.
The Tayron is a monocoque SUV with sharper on-road manners, 4MOTION AWD and more premium cabin tech; the diesel Fortuner remains the body-on-frame choice for serious off-roading and tried-and-tested long-term reliability.
Indicatively ₹50.66 lakh–₹58.33 lakh on-road in Hyderabad: ex-showroom ₹41.99 lakh–₹46.99 lakh (Delhi, 30 Oct 2026) plus Telangana life tax (18%–20%), first-year insurance and registration. Dealer quotes vary with insurance add-ons and accessories.
The top variant is the R-Line 2.0 TSI 4MOTION DSG (Petrol, 7-speed DSG) at ₹46.99 lakh ex-showroom Delhi; the base model is the Life 2.0 TSI 4MOTION DSG (Petrol, 7-speed DSG) at ₹41.99 lakh. 2 variants in all, as of 30 Oct 2026.
boot space 345 litres, 7 seats, length 4792 mm (Volkswagen official specification).
