The Auto Grid Review
Volkswagen Virtus Review: Our Verdict
Virtus sedans come into our Kondapur bay less often than the SUVs, but when they do it's almost always a GT Line or GT Plus in Carbon Steel Grey or Candy White, and the owners care about the paint. The Virtus's low front splitter and front bumper lip are the first things to scrape on speed breakers and basement ramps, and we see stone-chip pitting on the bonnet edge within the first few thousand kilometres on ORR-heavy cars. The long doors and chrome window surrounds on the Chrome trim pick up fine swirl marks from frequent hand-washing faster than most cars this size, and the GT Line's gloss-black roof and mirror caps show scratches more readily than the body colour underneath. It is a well-built, reassuringly stiff sedan to work on — flat panels, consistent paint thickness, and the 5-star GNCAP rating shows in how the body shell holds its shape in a minor parking knock. Buyers cross-shop it against the City and Slavia, and most tell us the Virtus feels the most 'German' of the three on the lift.
What we like
- +5-star Global NCAP rating for adult and child occupants
- +1.5 TSI DSG is genuinely quick and refined for the segment
- +Stiff, reassuring body structure with consistent panel gaps
- +521-litre boot is class-leading for a sedan this size
What we’d change
- –Low front splitter scrapes on speed breakers and ramps
- –Chrome trim's window surrounds show swirl marks quickly
- –Rear headroom is tight for tall rear passengers
- –Service network is thinner than Maruti/Hyundai in smaller towns
Is the Virtus right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
The 1.0 TSI AT is smooth in stop-go traffic and the sedan's low stance makes it easy to place in tight Madhapur lanes, though the front splitter needs care on ramps.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
The 1.5 TSI DSG is the standout here — strong mid-range, a stable high-speed ride and the quietest cabin in its class on ORR runs.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Six airbags, a 5-star GNCAP rating and a genuinely large 521-litre boot make it a sensible, safe family sedan; rear knee room is adequate but not class-best.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
The 1.5 TSI DSG's torque and the Virtus's planted German-tuned chassis reward a keen driver more than most sedans at this price.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Comfortline and Highline are easy to drive and well-equipped, but resale and service costs trail the Honda City and Maruti equivalents.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
A composed, quiet ride for the rear seat on the GT Plus, but legroom is sedan-class average rather than limousine-like.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
179 mm ground clearance and a low front splitter make it a car for good roads, not broken ghat sections.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Volkswagen Virtus: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The low front splitter and bumper lip scrape first on speed breakers and basement ramps; the bonnet edge picks up stone chips on ORR-heavy commutes, and the Chrome trim's window surrounds and GT Line's gloss-black roof show fine wash swirls faster than the body paint.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with a front-splitter wrap for Comfortline/Highline commuters; AG1 Square full body for GT Line and GT Plus owners who want the contrast roof and chrome trim kept scratch-free long-term.
Coverage
Full front and splitter standard; add door-edge and sill guards for daily city parking, full body for GT Line/GT Plus cars.

FAQs
Volkswagen Virtus: Questions Buyers Ask
Volkswagen lists the Virtus from ₹10,70,900 (Comfortline 1.0 TSI) to around ₹19,20,000 (GT Plus Anniversary Edition 1.5 TSI DSG) ex-showroom Delhi as of 30 October 2026, per volkswagen.co.in and CarWale's dated variant breakdown.
The Volkswagen Virtus holds a 5-star Global NCAP rating for both adult and child occupant protection, one of the first sedans in India to achieve the full 5 stars in both categories under GNCAP's updated protocol.
Highline Plus 1.0 TSI gives the sunroof, digital cockpit and leatherette seats without the GT premium. The GT Line and GT Plus add the 1.5 TSI DSG's extra power for buyers who want the quicker engine.
Its low front splitter is the panel we repair most often on Virtus sedans that come through our bay, and the Chrome trim's chrome window surrounds show wash swirls quickly, so a full-front AG1 film with splitter protection is our standard Virtus package. Message Auto Grid on WhatsApp for a plan for your trim.
Chrome is the standard trim range (Comfortline through Topline) with chrome exterior accents; Sport/GT Line and GT Plus add the 1.5 TSI DSG engine option, black styling elements, sportier seats and the GT badging.
The Virtus and Slavia are mechanical siblings sharing the same MQB-A0-IN platform and engines. The differences are styling, infotainment software and trim packaging; the Virtus leans slightly sportier in GT trims while the Slavia is marketed as the more premium-feeling cabin.
The Virtus is the more engaging drive with its turbo-petrol engines and the 1.5 TSI DSG's stronger performance, plus a larger 521-litre boot; the City counters with a four-cylinder engine's extra refinement and Honda's wider service network. Both are 5-star rated for safety.
Yes, for buyers prioritising safety and driving refinement — it holds a 5-star Global NCAP rating, a stiff MQB-A0-IN body shell and the quickest engine in its class (1.5 TSI DSG), though resale value and service-network reach still trail the Honda City and Maruti equivalents.
No. The current Virtus line-up is petrol-only, with a 1.0L TSI (MT/AT) and a 1.5L TSI EVO (DSG); Volkswagen does not offer a diesel Virtus in India.
Indicatively ₹12.86 lakh–₹23.49 lakh on-road in Hyderabad: ex-showroom ₹10.71 lakh–₹19.20 lakh (Delhi, 30 Oct 2026) plus Telangana life tax (17%–18%), first-year insurance and registration. Dealer quotes vary with insurance add-ons and accessories.
Volkswagen's claimed figures: 1.0L TSI turbo-petrol — 20.19 km/l (MT), 18.7 km/l (AT); 1.5L TSI EVO (Active Cylinder Technology) — 19.62 km/l. Real-world figures depend on traffic, load and driving style.
The top variant is the GT Plus Anniversary Edition 1.5 TSI DSG (Petrol, 7-speed DSG) at ₹19.20 lakh ex-showroom Delhi; the base model is the Comfortline 1.0 TSI MT (Petrol, 6-speed MT) at ₹10.71 lakh. 11 variants in all, as of 30 Oct 2026.
Ground clearance 179 mm, boot space 521 litres, 5 seats, length 4561 mm (Volkswagen official specification).
