The Auto Grid Review
Mercedes-Benz GLE Review: Our Verdict
The GLE that comes into our bay is a big, honest car to work on — tall, flat doors and a simple SUV silhouette with none of the fussy creases of the smaller GLC. The front bumper and the lower edge of the AMG Line apron take the first stone chips on the ORR and on any gravel approach road, and because so many GLE owners actually use the standard AIRMATIC suspension's raised setting on weekend trips, we see more underbody and sill scuffing here than on the GLC or C-Class. Most cars we see are 450d diesels or the new Night Edition in Obsidian Black, and the third-row EASY-ENTRY mechanism means the rear doors get opened and closed constantly — door edges and sills are a priority zone for us. Panel size works in our favour when filming; the main time cost is the third-row glass and the many creases around the new front grille design.
What we like
- +Standard AIRMATIC air suspension on the petrol and diesel sixes rides beautifully on broken roads
- +Genuinely usable third row and a 630-litre boot even with seven aboard
- +4MATIC all-wheel drive and the 450d's 750 Nm make it capable well off smooth tarmac
- +Simple, large body panels film efficiently despite the car's size
What we’d change
- –Among the priciest options in its class once you step up to the 450/450d
- –Fuel economy is modest for the petrol and diesel sixes in city use
- –No official current-generation Euro NCAP retest — the 5-star rating on file dates to 2019 and has since lapsed under Euro NCAP's own annual-review rule
- –Over 4.9 metres long, so tight multi-storey parking needs care
Is the GLE right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
It drives easily thanks to light steering and a smooth auto, but the sheer length and width make it a poor fit for tight Hyderabad lanes and parking.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
This is where the GLE shines — AIRMATIC suspension, a quiet cabin and strong six-cylinder torque make long ORR and expressway runs genuinely effortless.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
A real seven-seat layout, a 630-litre boot and 9 airbags make this one of the most capable family-first luxury SUVs in India.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
The GLE 450's 381 PS is quick in a straight line, but this is a comfort-tuned SUV, not something built to be hustled through corners.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Price, size and running costs put this well outside any sensible first-car brief.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Comfortable and well equipped for the second row, though a dedicated chauffeur-first buyer may still prefer the longer, lower E-Class for pure rear-seat space.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
Standard 4MATIC, AIRMATIC ride height and genuine torque make the GLE one of the more capable Mercedes SUVs for ghat roads and rough approach tracks.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Mercedes-Benz GLE: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The front bumper and the lower AMG Line apron take the first stone chips on the ORR and on gravel approach roads; owners who actually use the raised AIRMATIC setting off-road see more underbody and sill scuffing than on the GLC.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with mirror caps and headlamp coverage for city-and-highway 300d owners; AG1 full-body plus underbody protection for 450/450d and Night Edition owners who use the car's off-road height setting on weekend trips.
Coverage
Full front plus A-pillars as the base package; add lower doors, sills, rear wheel-arches and underbody film for regular off-tarmac use, and full-body coverage for the six-cylinder and Night Edition trims.

FAQs
Mercedes-Benz GLE: Questions Buyers Ask
CarDekho's current price list has the GLE from ₹1.00 crore (300d AMG Line) to ₹1.17 crore (450d 4MATIC) ex-showroom, Delhi, as of November 2026, with the Night Edition variants at ₹1.05 crore (300d) and ₹1.14 crore (450).
CarDekho lists ARAI-claimed efficiency of about 16 km/l for the GLE 300d diesel and 8.6 km/l for the six-cylinder GLE 450 petrol and GLE 450d diesel.
Euro NCAP tested the GLE in 2019 and awarded it 5 stars (91% adult, 90% child occupant protection, with front, side and knee airbags, AEB and lane-keep assist as standard on the tested car). That rating has since expired under Euro NCAP's own annual-revalidation rule — a lapsed listing reflects Euro NCAP's review schedule, not a retest showing lower safety.
Most buyers who want AIRMATIC comfort without the six-cylinder premium pick the GLE 300d. If budget allows, the 450d's 750 Nm diesel six is the one our bay sees most among owners who specifically wanted the extra pull and standard air suspension.
The most recent dated figure we found (CarWale, 15 April 2023) grouped the GLE with the GLS and S-Class at 2-6 months. We could not source a 2026-dated figure, so confirm live stock and your variant with a dealer before booking.
Yes — the front bumper and lower apron are the panels we repair most often on GLE cars that come through our bay, especially on owners who use the raised AIRMATIC setting off smooth tarmac, so a full-body AG1 film with underbody protection is our usual recommendation.
