The Auto Grid Review
Mercedes-Benz E-Class Review: Our Verdict
The long-wheelbase E-Class is the single most common Mercedes-Benz we see coming in for film work, and most of them arrive as E 450 4MATIC AMG Line cars in Polar White or Obsidian Black — exactly the trim Mercedes-Benz itself says is driving E-Class demand in India. The long 2,961 mm wheelbase and low-slung nose mean the front bumper and the leading edge of the bonnet take stone chips on the ORR and on broken approach roads before the clearance-sensitive lower lip even gets close to a speed breaker; we see more underbody and bumper-corner scuffs on this car than on the shorter C-Class. The split tail-lamp graphic is a simple, paint-free zone to mask around, and the big, flat doors on the LWB body make it one of the quicker Mercedes saloons to wrap cleanly. Because so many of these are chauffeur-driven company cars that stay in the fleet for years, owners default to full-body coverage rather than front-only more often than with any other model we service.
What we like
- +India-only long-wheelbase body gives genuinely chauffeur-grade rear space
- +E 220d diesel's 440 Nm and refinement suit both city and highway driving well
- +Big, flat door panels film cleanly with minimal trim removal
- +Mercedes-Benz's own data shows it as India's best-selling luxury sedan, which keeps resale strong
What we’d change
- –Roughly 135 mm unladen ground clearance needs real care on tall speed breakers and ramps
- –Petrol E 200 fuel economy falls into single digits in heavy traffic
- –Level 2 ADAS and the full Burmester system are reserved for higher trims
- –Over 5 metres long, so tight multi-storey car parks and narrow city lanes take some getting used to
Is the E-Class right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
The 9G-TRONIC is relaxed in traffic, but the car's length and the roughly 135 mm clearance make tight Hyderabad streets and tall breakers a genuine consideration.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
This is the E-Class's home turf — a long wheelbase, a quiet cabin and the E 220d's torque or the E 450's six-cylinder pull make ORR and expressway runs effortless.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
A 540-litre boot and genuinely long rear seats work well for family trips, though the car's size can be a handful in cramped parking.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
This is a comfort-first LWB saloon, not a driver's car; buyers who want to enjoy a Mercedes behind the wheel should look at the standard-wheelbase AMG E 53 instead.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Price, running costs and sheer size make this an impractical first car; it is bought as a second or company car almost without exception.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
The 36-degree reclining rear seats, Chauffeur Package and genuinely long wheelbase make this the benchmark rear-seat Mercedes at its price, and the reason it is the brand's best-selling sedan here.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
Low ground clearance, rear/all-wheel road-biased drive and a long body rule this out for anything beyond smooth tarmac.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Mercedes-Benz E-Class: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The low-slung front bumper and bonnet leading edge take stone chips on the ORR and broken approach roads before the car's own clearance becomes an issue at speed breakers; bumper corners and the underbody scuff more on this LWB body than on the shorter C-Class.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with mirror caps and headlamp coverage as the minimum for E 200/E 220d city cars; AG1 full-body for E 450 4MATIC and chauffeur-driven cars that stay in the fleet for years and are generally kept in pristine condition.
Coverage
Full front plus A-pillars as the base package; add lower doors, sills and rear wheel-arches for highway-heavy use, and full-body coverage for AMG Line and long-term fleet cars.

BMW
2 Series Gran Coupe
₹46.90 lakh – ₹48.90 lakhex-showroom

Two trims, 218 M Sport and 218 M Sport Pro, rival the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz CLA on price.
BMW
3 Series
₹62.70 lakh – ₹77.80 lakhex-showroom
The BMW 3 Series is sold in India as the stretched 3 Series LWB — a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol 330Li M Sport and a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel 320Ld M Sport, both 8-speed automatic — plus the 275 kW/374 hp M340i xDrive performance sedan. BMW
5 Series
₹77.00 lakhex-showroom
The BMW 5 Series is sold in India exclusively as the 530Li M Sport Long Wheelbase — a 2.0-litre TwinPower Turbo petrol with 48V mild-hybrid assist, 258 hp, 400 Nm and an 8-speed automatic, built on a 3,105 mm wheelbase for rear-seat space. It rivals the Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class and is BMW India's chauffeur-driven executive sedan.
BMW
7 Series
₹1.95 croreex-showroom
The facelifted BMW 7 Series arrived in India in September 2026 as a single 740 M Sport petrol variant — a 3.0-litre inline-6 with 48V mild-hybrid assist, 400 hp, 580 Nm and an 8-speed automatic. It rivals the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Audi A8 L, and sits below BMW's fully electric i7 M70 in the same body.
FAQs
Mercedes-Benz E-Class: Questions Buyers Ask
Mercedes-Benz's own online store lists the LWB E-Class from ₹80.50 lakh (E 200) to ₹82.50 lakh (E 220d) and ₹94.50 lakh (E 450 4MATIC AMG Line) ex-showroom as of 6 November 2026. The standard-wheelbase Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid sits well above this, around ₹1.69-1.72 crore ex-showroom per Autocar India.
Mercedes-Benz India sells the E-Class exclusively in long-wheelbase (LWB) form, since the brand has found Indian buyers — many of whom are chauffeur-driven — prioritise rear-seat space; India is the only right-hand-drive market to get the LWB saloon, per the official brochure.
Euro NCAP tested the current-generation (W214) E-Class in 2024 and awarded it 5 stars, naming it Euro NCAP's overall 'Best Performer' for that year with 92% adult, 90% child, 84% vulnerable-road-user and 87% safety-assist scores — the highest weighted score of any car Euro NCAP tested in 2024.
Most owners who want the brand's best rear-seat package without the E 450's premium pick the E 220d diesel for its mileage and torque. If budget allows, the E 450 4MATIC AMG Line adds a six-cylinder petrol, all-wheel drive and the sportier bodykit.
The most recent dated report we found (CarWale, 15 April 2023) grouped the E-Class among Mercedes-Benz India's shortest waits, up to 3 months. We could not source a 2026-dated figure; Mercedes-Benz's own H1 2026 update calls the LWB E-Class its highest-selling luxury sedan, so confirm current stock with a dealer.
The current W214-generation LWB E-Class launched in India in August 2024 and was updated with the '140 Years Celebration Edition' in 2026. Mercedes-Benz has not announced a successor for the India market; the brand typically runs a generation for 6-7 years before a full model change, so no near-term replacement is expected.
Yes — the low front bumper and bonnet are the panels we repair most often on E-Class cars that come through our bay, and many of these cars stay in service for years as chauffeur-driven fleet vehicles, so a full-body AG1 film is our usual recommendation.
