GLS Waiting Period

Typical across India: 2-6 months for the standard GLS as of April 2023; the GLS Maybach has run far longer (8-16 months as of that same report) (as of 15 Apr 2023)

CarWale's dealer survey (15 Apr 2023) grouped the GLS with the GLE and S-Class at 2-6 months, with the Maybach-badged GLS singled out at 8-16 months. An earlier Autocar India report (9 Apr 2022, previous generation) put the GLS as high as 8-11 months. No 2026-dated figure was found — confirm current stock with a dealer before booking.

The Auto Grid Review

Mercedes-Benz GLS Review: Our Verdict

4.4/ 5 · Auto Grid Editorial

The GLS is the biggest, heaviest car we regularly see at the Kondapur bay, and its sheer scale changes how we work on it — the 5.2-metre body means more time per panel, but the surfaces themselves are large and simple, which actually makes the film go down cleanly once we're set up. The tall, deep front bumper and the lower AMG Line apron take the worst of the stone chipping on the ORR and any gravel approach, and because this is usually a chauffeur-driven car that owners keep for years, we see less casual kerb damage on the doors than on a daily-driven GLE. Most cars that come in are 450d AMG Line diesels in Obsidian Black or Polar White; the Maybach GLS 600, when we do see one, gets the full-body treatment without exception given what the owner has paid for the car. Panel gaps are tight for something this size, and the two-tone Night Edition cars need careful masking around the black-out trim rather than filming over it.

What we like

  • +AIRMATIC air suspension standard across the range rides excellently despite the car's size
  • +Genuinely usable three rows and a flagship-grade rear-seat experience
  • +4MATIC all-wheel drive and the 450d's 750 Nm give real off-tarmac capability for a car this size
  • +Strong resale and brand cachet as the 'S-Class of SUVs'

What we’d change

  • –Among the most expensive SUVs on sale in India, before even considering the Maybach
  • –355-litre boot with all three rows up is modest given the car's overall length
  • –No Euro NCAP or Global NCAP crash-test result has been published for the GLS
  • –5.2 metres long and over 2 tonnes, so tight city parking and narrow lanes need real care

Is the GLS right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored

Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.

City Commuter

10–30 km a day through traffic

This is not a city car by any reasonable measure — its length and turning circle make daily Hyderabad commuting and parking genuinely difficult.

Highway Cruiser

ORR laps and expressway weekends

AIRMATIC suspension, a hushed cabin and a diesel six with 750 Nm make long highway runs the GLS's natural habitat.

Family First

Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips

A real seven-seat layout and 9 airbags work well for larger families, though the 355-litre boot with all rows up is tighter than the car's size suggests.

Driving Enthusiast

Cares how it steers, not just how it looks

381 PS moves a 2.5-tonne SUV competently, but this is a comfort- and status-led car, not one bought to be driven hard.

First-Car Buyer

Budget-conscious and resale-aware

Price, size and running costs put the GLS entirely outside any first-car consideration.

Chauffeur-Driven Executive

Judged from the rear seat

The MBUX rear tablet, Chauffeur package and reclining second row make this one of the best chauffeur-driven luxury SUVs money can buy in India.

Weekend Explorer

Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads

Standard 4MATIC and AIRMATIC ride height give it real capability off smooth tarmac, within the limits of its size on genuinely narrow trails.

Paint Protection

PPF for the Mercedes-Benz GLS: What We Install and Why

Where it takes damage

The tall front bumper and lower AMG Line apron take the worst of the stone chipping on the ORR and gravel approach roads; because most GLS owners are chauffeur-driven, door-edge kerb damage is less common than on a daily-driven GLE, but the leading edges still need protecting.

Our recommendation

AG1 full-body as the default for AMG Line and Night Edition cars given the car's price point and how long owners typically keep it; Maybach GLS 600 owners invariably choose full-body coverage without exception.

Coverage

Full-body coverage as the standard package, with special masking around Night Edition black-out trim; underbody and sill protection added for owners who use the car's off-road height setting.

FAQs

Mercedes-Benz GLS: Questions Buyers Ask

CarDekho's current price list has the GLS from ₹1.38 crore (450 4MATIC AMG Line) to ₹1.43 crore (450d Night Edition) ex-showroom, Delhi, as of November 2026. The separate Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 sits well above this, around ₹2.56-2.75 crore ex-showroom per Autocar India.

Multiple India price-aggregator listings (Cars24, CarDekho, 91wheels) cite an ARAI-claimed figure of around 12 km/l for both the GLS 450 petrol and GLS 450d diesel.

No independent crash-test agency — Euro NCAP, Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP — has published a result for the GLS; Euro NCAP has not tested this model. It carries 9 airbags, AIRMATIC stability support and 4MATIC all-wheel drive as standard, but there is no third-party star rating to cite.

Most GLS owners we see choose the 450d AMG Line diesel for its torque and highway manners; the petrol 450 saves roughly ₹2 lakh upfront but gives it back at the pump. The Night Edition adds black styling and a head-up display for a modest premium.

CarWale's dealer survey (15 April 2023) put the standard GLS at 2-6 months, with the Maybach-badged GLS stretching to 8-16 months. We could not source a 2026-dated figure, so confirm live stock and your exact variant with a dealer before booking.

Yes — given the price point and how long owners typically keep a GLS, we recommend a full-body AG1 film as standard rather than a front-only package, with extra care taken around Night Edition black-out trim. Message Auto Grid on WhatsApp for a plan suited to your trim and colour.

The top variant is the GLS 450d 4MATIC Night Edition (Diesel, 9-speed automatic (9G-TRONIC), 4MATIC all-wheel drive) at ₹1.43 crore ex-showroom New Delhi; the base model is the GLS 450 4MATIC AMG Line (Petrol, 9-speed automatic (9G-TRONIC), 4MATIC all-wheel drive) at ₹1.38 crore. 5 variants in all, as of 6 Nov 2026.
