The Auto Grid Review
Volvo XC90 Review: Our Verdict
The XC90 has been Volvo's flagship for Hyderabad's old-money buyers for a decade, and the cars that come into our bay are almost always well cared for already — this is a car owners already protect. Its estate-like, low-key styling makes it one of the more straightforward full-size SUVs to film, with long flat doors and a bonnet free of aggressive creases. The matrix-LED headlight units are a real investment if damaged, so we're careful during any front-end masking. With the EX90 now sitting above it as Volvo's electric flagship, the XC90 has settled into being the value, familiar-badge choice — and the build quality on the units we see reflects over a decade of local assembly refinement at Hoskote.
What we like
- +Genuinely practical 7-seat layout with third-row AC
- +Locally assembled, keeping it sharper-priced than most full-size luxury SUV rivals
- +Pilot Assist and Volvo's comprehensive ADAS suite as standard
- +A decade of local-assembly refinement shows in consistent build quality
What we’d change
- –No up-to-date Euro NCAP or Bharat NCAP rating found for the current mild-hybrid facelift
- –Ground clearance figure not published by Volvo for the current generation
- –No dated India waiting-period survey exists yet
- –Now overshadowed internally by the newer, pricier EX90
Is the XC90 right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
A near-5-metre, 7-seat SUV rides comfortably in traffic, but its size makes it oversized for daily city-only use.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
Pilot Assist, a settled ride and genuine third-row comfort make the XC90 an excellent long-distance family cruiser.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Seven real seats, Volvo's safety-first reputation and a practical cabin make this one of the strongest family picks at the price.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
Comfort and composure are clearly the priorities here, not outright driver engagement or a sporty chassis feel.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
At ₹98.80 lakh, with running costs to match its size, this is nobody's realistic first car.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
A comfortable, quiet second row suits a chauffeur-driven brief well, just behind the dedicated-executive ES/RX on isolation.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
AWD and active air suspension help on light trails, but this is fundamentally a road-biased family SUV.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Volvo XC90: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The flat bonnet and front bumper take highway stone chips first, and the matrix-LED headlight units are expensive to replace if scuffed or chipped during a front-end incident.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with lower-door coverage for most owners; full body for buyers who want the finish protected from day one, especially around the headlight units.
Coverage
Full front standard; add lower doors, wheel protection and headlight-surround coverage for highway-heavy use.

FAQs
Volvo XC90: Questions Buyers Ask
Volvo prices the XC90 B5 AWD Mild Hybrid from ₹98.80 lakh ex-showroom as of November 2026.
Yes. The XC90 seats seven across three rows, with third-row air conditioning as standard.
The EX90 is Volvo's newer, all-electric flagship with more tech and a higher price (₹1.26 crore); the XC90 remains the more affordable, familiar mild-hybrid petrol option with the same practical 7-seat layout.
No up-to-date Euro NCAP or Bharat NCAP rating was found for the current mild-hybrid facelift sold in India.
From the installer bay, it's one of the most consistently well-built full-size luxury SUVs we see, with a comfortable, practical 7-seat cabin — the main gap is the absence of an up-to-date crash-test rating for the current mild-hybrid facelift, unlike the newer EX90.
Its matrix-LED headlights are expensive to replace and the bonnet takes highway chips readily, so we recommend at least a full-front AG1 film, ideally extended to a full body.
Indicatively ₹1.19 crore–₹1.24 crore on-road in Hyderabad: ex-showroom ₹98.80 lakh (Delhi, 2 Nov 2026) plus Telangana life tax (18%–21%), first-year insurance and registration. Dealer quotes vary with insurance add-ons and accessories.
Volvo's claimed figures: B5 mild-hybrid petrol — 8.072 l/100km combined (WLTP). Real-world figures depend on traffic, load and driving style.
XC90: Full-size luxury SUV, ₹98.80 lakh ex-showroom, Petrol (Mild Hybrid, 48V), Auto Grid rating 4.3/5. XC60: Mid-size luxury SUV, ₹70.90 lakh ex-showroom, Petrol (Mild Hybrid, 48V), rated 4.2/5. See the Volvo XC60 page for its full variant list and our verdict.
