The Auto Grid Review

Volvo EX90 Review: Our Verdict

4.4/ 5 · Auto Grid Editorial

The EX90 is too new for us to have built up real condition data — most of what we've seen so far is pre-delivery inspection work rather than correction on a used, driven car. What its size and shape tell us: the T-shaped pixel headlamps and the connecting rear light bar are the two most expensive single components on the car, and the flush door handles need careful masking so the ground-lighting function isn't disturbed. At 5 metres and ₹1.26 crore, this is a car that gets protected in full from the day it's delivered, not after the first stone chip shows up — and being Volvo's first software-defined vehicle here, any bodywork near its sensor-dense nose should go hand in hand with a recalibration check.

What we like

  • +Current, excellent 5-star Euro NCAP rating — 92% adult occupant protection
  • +625km WLTP range and 800V architecture with rapid DC charging
  • +Genuine 6-seat flagship comfort, with massaging seats and a 4-zone climate system
  • +Volvo's first software-defined-vehicle platform in India brings OTA updates to the flagship

What we’d change

  • –₹1.26 crore is an introductory price with no stated expiry
  • –CBU import — no local-assembly cost advantage over the XC90
  • –No India-specific Bharat NCAP confirmation, only the global Euro NCAP result
  • –Deliveries only begin January 2027 — a genuine wait even for early bookers

Is the EX90 right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored

Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.

City Commuter

10–30 km a day through traffic

A 5-metre electric flagship is composed in traffic, but its sheer size makes it oversized for city-only commuting.

Highway Cruiser

ORR laps and expressway weekends

625km range, Pilot Assist and air suspension make the EX90 an outstanding long-distance cruiser.

Family First

Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips

A current 5-star Euro NCAP rating, genuine 6-seat comfort and third-row AC make this one of the strongest family flagships on sale.

Driving Enthusiast

Cares how it steers, not just how it looks

456hp is quick in a straight line, but this is a comfort- and tech-focused flagship, not a driver's SUV.

First-Car Buyer

Budget-conscious and resale-aware

At ₹1.26 crore, with running costs and a charging routine to match, this is nobody's first car.

Chauffeur-Driven Executive

Judged from the rear seat

Massaging seats, a quiet cabin and genuine third-row comfort make the EX90 a strong chauffeur-driven choice.

Weekend Explorer

Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads

Active air suspension raises clearance to 250mm, giving it more genuine off-tarmac ability than most electric SUVs, though it's still fundamentally road-focused.

Paint Protection

PPF for the Volvo EX90: What We Install and Why

Where it takes damage

The sensor-dense nose, T-shaped pixel headlamps and the connecting rear light bar are the most expensive, most failure-sensitive panels on the car, and the flush door handles' ground-lighting function needs care during any masking.

Our recommendation

AG1 Square full body is our standard recommendation for a flagship at this price, with any front-end work paired with a sensor recalibration check given the car's software-defined, sensor-dense nose.

Coverage

Full body standard, with focused protection and calibration-aware handling around the front sensor cluster and headlights.

FAQs

Volvo EX90: Questions Buyers Ask

Volvo launched the EX90 at an introductory ₹1.26 crore ex-showroom on 12 October 2026; Volvo has not said how long this price will hold.

Volvo claims up to 625 km on a full charge (WLTP) from its 106 kWh battery and dual-motor, 800V powertrain.

The India-spec EX90 is offered only as a 6-seater, unlike some global markets that also get a 7-seat layout.

Yes. Euro NCAP awarded the EX90 a 5-star rating in November 2025 — 92% adult occupant, 93% child occupant, 82% vulnerable road users and 86% safety assist, which Volvo describes as its safest production vehicle to date. No separate Bharat NCAP test has been confirmed for the India-spec car.

Volvo has stated deliveries begin January 2027 for bookings placed after the 12 October 2026 launch; bookings made before 31 December 2026 include an introductory charger, service package and buyback offer.

The EX90 is Volvo's newer, all-electric flagship with a current 5-star Euro NCAP rating, 625km range and a software-defined platform, priced ₹27.2 lakh above the mild-hybrid XC90; the XC90 remains the more affordable, familiar choice with the same 6/7-seat practicality.

Given the cost of its pixel headlamps, connecting rear light bar and sensor-dense nose, we recommend a full-body AG1 Square film, with any front-end work followed by a sensor recalibration check.

Indicatively ₹1.29 crore–₹1.31 crore on-road in Hyderabad: ex-showroom ₹1.26 crore (Delhi, 12 Oct 2026) plus Telangana life tax (0% (EV exemption)), first-year insurance and registration. EVs pay no road tax or registration fee in Telangana until 31 December 2026. Dealer quotes vary with insurance add-ons and accessories.

EX90: Full-size electric SUV, ₹1.26 crore ex-showroom, Electric, Auto Grid rating 4.4/5. EV9: Flagship electric SUV, ₹1.30 crore ex-showroom, Electric, rated 4.4/5. See the Kia EV9 page for its full variant list and our verdict.

Ground clearance 210 mm, boot space 324 litres, 6 seats, length 5037 mm (Volvo official specification).
