The Auto Grid Review
Volvo EC40 Review: Our Verdict
The EC40 is a Volvo we're seeing more of as buyers realise it's the same car they may remember as the C40 Recharge — the coupe roofline is the one real distinguishing feature versus the boxier EX30 and EX40 that used to share a showroom with it. Its tapering rear glasshouse and vertical tail-lamps are the trickiest parts of the car to film cleanly, needing extra care around the curves, while the pixel LED headlight units are expensive enough that we're deliberate during front-end work. Being locally assembled at Hoskote, the panel fit and paint consistency we see is reliably tight — this is a car bought by someone who already trusts the badge, not someone discovering it for the first time.
What we like
- +551km WLTP range from an 82kWh battery, among the stronger figures at this price
- +Locally assembled, keeping pricing sharper than a CBU-import EV rival
- +Distinctive coupe styling versus boxier EV crossovers
- +Volvo's full ADAS suite as standard
What we’d change
- –No direct Euro NCAP rating found under the EC40/C40 Recharge nameplate in this run
- –Coupe roofline reduces rear headroom versus a conventional SUV body
- –No dated India waiting-period survey exists yet
- –A minor efficiency-figure discrepancy exists between Volvo's own spec page (551km) and some secondary sources (530km) — use the OEM figure
Is the EC40 right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
Compact-for-its-segment dimensions and instant EV torque make it an easy, efficient city companion.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
551km WLTP range and Pilot Assist make it a capable, comfortable long-distance EV, assuming charging infrastructure along the route.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Decent boot space and Volvo's safety reputation help, but the coupe roofline eats into rear headroom versus a boxier SUV.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
408hp and 670Nm from the dual-motor setup give it genuine pace, even if the chassis is tuned for comfort.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
At ₹59 lakh, with a coupe body most first-time buyers don't need, this isn't a realistic first car.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
A quiet, well-equipped cabin works for a self-driven executive, though the coupe roofline is a minor compromise for a rear-seat brief.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
A road-biased electric crossover with a coupe roofline has no genuine off-road intent.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Volvo EC40: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The tapering rear glasshouse and vertical tail-lamps are the trickiest areas to film cleanly, and the pixel LED headlight units are costly to replace if chipped on the highway.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with lower-door coverage for most owners; full body for buyers who want the coupe-specific curves and rear light units fully protected.
Coverage
Full front standard; add lower doors and rear-quarter coverage for highway-heavy use.

FAQs
Volvo EC40: Questions Buyers Ask
Volvo prices the EC40 Ultra (Twin Motor) from ₹59 lakh ex-showroom as of November 2026.
Yes — Volvo itself confirms the EC40 is simply the C40 Recharge under a new name, reflecting its place in Volvo's electric car line-up; it is the same car mechanically.
Volvo's own specification page claims up to 551 km (WLTP) from its 82 kWh battery; some secondary sources cite a lower, rounded 530 km estimate.
No direct Euro NCAP or Bharat NCAP result specifically for the EC40/C40 Recharge nameplate was confirmed in this research pass — treat its safety rating as unconfirmed rather than assuming its sibling XC40's rating carries over.
Its tapering rear glasshouse and pixel LED headlights are both expensive and tricky to work around, so we recommend at least a full-front AG1 film, ideally extended to a full body.
Indicatively ₹60.53 lakh–₹61.41 lakh on-road in Hyderabad: ex-showroom ₹59.00 lakh (Delhi, 2 Nov 2026) plus Telangana life tax (0% (EV exemption)), first-year insurance and registration. EVs pay no road tax or registration fee in Telangana until 31 December 2026. Dealer quotes vary with insurance add-ons and accessories.
