The Auto Grid Review
Hyundai IONIQ 5 Review: Our Verdict
The IONIQ 5 is a rare car in Kondapur but one we remember, because the panels are unlike anything else Hyundai sells: a clamshell bonnet that runs to the wheel arches with almost no gap, flush door handles that must pop out cleanly after filming, and parametric-pixel lamps that sit proud of the bumper. The Gravity Gold Matte cars are the ones owners worry about most, and rightly so, because the matte is permanent the moment someone polishes it. Paint on the CKD cars is deep and the clear coat is hard. The big flat bonnet takes the first stones on the ORR, the 20-inch aero wheels kerb easily, and the sharp Z-crease on the doors is where car-park dings show. The updated 2026 car's bumper skid plates are textured plastic, which helps. It is a full-body car for us by default, usually with a ceramic top coat on the matte.
What we like
- +690 km ARAI range and 18-minute 10–80% charging
- +800 V E-GMP platform with V2L and a flat floor
- +Relaxation seats, vision roof and 22-function ADAS
- +Design that still looks new in 2026
What we’d change
- –One variant at ₹55.70 lakh; no AWD
- –Few 350 kW chargers in Telangana
- –No Bharat NCAP result
- –Matte paint and flush handles demand careful protection
Is the IONIQ 5 right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
Silent, smooth and with a tight turning circle for its size, though 4.66 m and 20-inch wheels need care in Jubilee Hills basements.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
A 3,000 mm wheelbase, 690 km range, adaptive cruise with lane following and a hushed cabin make it the most relaxing car Hyundai sells in India.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Six airbags, ISOFIX, a flat floor, a huge boot and a frunk; the crash rating is not published and the matte paint is not child-proof.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
228 PS and instant torque are brisk, but it is rear-drive comfort-tuned and the N version is not sold here.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
A ₹55 lakh electric crossover is not a first car; charging and insurance alone are a learning curve.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Reclining, sliding, heated rear seats, a vision roof and near silence; the best rear seat in a Hyundai in India.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
V2L and range suit long weekends, but it is rear-wheel drive on 20-inch road tyres and not a trail car.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Hyundai IONIQ 5: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
Clamshell bonnet leading edge and the pixel-lamp housings from highway stones; door Z-creases from car-park dings; 20-inch aero alloys from kerbs; Gravity Gold Matte is ruined by any polish.
Our recommendation
AG1 Square full body is our default on the IONIQ 5, with a matte-finish film on Gravity Gold Matte and careful release of the flush door handles; AG1 full-front only for lease cars.
Coverage
Full body preferred; minimum full front, door creases and wheel-arch lips.
