The Auto Grid Review
Renault Kwid Review: Our Verdict
The Kwid is a common sight in our Kondapur bay — it's one of the cheapest ways into a new car in Hyderabad, and most arrive for their first film job within weeks of delivery. The thin factory clear coat on Fiery Red and Zanskar Blue cars shows dealer-prep swirl under our inspection lamps almost every time, and the short front overhang means the lower bumper and the SUV-styled skid plate take the first stone chips on ORR ramps within a few hundred kilometres. The bonnet is small and simply creased, so it is an easy, inexpensive car to film — which matters, because Kwid buyers are usually protecting the one new-car purchase they've saved hardest for. The Climber's dual-tone Mystery Black roof shows scuffs at the roof rail junctions that owners don't expect on a car this size.
What we like
- +Cheapest way into a new Renault, with a 3-year/100,000 km warranty
- +184 mm ground clearance shrugs off Hyderabad's broken side streets
- +279 L boot (620 L expandable) is generous for the segment
- +Easy-R AMT removes the city clutch chore for first-time drivers
What we’d change
- –1-star Global NCAP rating (2016-era base-spec test) is the weakest in our catalogue
- –69 PS feels strained with four aboard or on Outer Ring Road inclines
- –Thin clear coat and hard interior plastics show wear and swirl early
- –Only two trims since the July 2026 simplification, so feature choice is narrow
Is the Kwid right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
Light controls, a tight turning circle and the Easy-R AMT make it an easy daily hatchback for Hyderabad's stop-start traffic, though the AC struggles on the hottest afternoons.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
69 PS and a short wheelbase make it feel breathless and nervous past 90 km/h on the ORR; it's built for the city, not the expressway.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
The 1-star Global NCAP adult rating and a tight rear bench make this a car we'd steer a young family away from if the budget allows a Kiger or Tiago instead.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
No turbo, no manual engagement to speak of, and a chassis tuned purely for low-speed compliance; there is nothing here for a keen driver.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
This is exactly the buyer Renault built it for — low purchase price, light running costs, easy AMT option and a wide service network for a first-time owner.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Rear seat space and refinement are both entry-level; nobody is being chauffeured in a Kwid.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
184 mm clearance is useful on broken roads, but the 69 PS engine and road-biased tyres run out of breath well before any real off-road use.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Renault Kwid: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The short front overhang and SUV-styled skid plate take the first stone chips on Hyderabad's ORR ramps; Fiery Red and Zanskar Blue show dealer-prep buffing swirl under our lamps on almost every car, and the Climber's dual-tone roof scuffs at the rail junctions in tight parking.
Our recommendation
AG1 front-bumper and headlight film is the realistic entry point for most Kwid buyers on a tight budget; we recommend adding the lower doors for anyone who regularly drives the ORR or outstation routes.
Coverage
Front bumper, bonnet lip and headlights standard; add lower doors and mirror caps for highway-heavy use.

FAQs
Renault Kwid: Questions Buyers Ask
Renault prices the Kwid from ₹4,52,900 (Evolution 1.0 MT) to ₹5,60,900 (Climber 1.0 Easy-R AMT) ex-showroom, all-India, as per Renault's own price page checked on 1 November 2026.
CarDekho's 15 September 2026 dealer survey put Hyderabad at 1–4 weeks across the Kwid range, similar to most Renault dealerships outside Delhi, Pune and Mumbai.
A Global NCAP test (2016, base specification) rated the Kwid 1 star for adult occupant protection. Renault has not published a separate Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP result for the current MY2026 Evolution/Climber facelift as of this writing.
Owner reviews and Renault's long-term tests most often flag road and wind noise at speed, hard interior plastics that mark and scratch, and the Easy-R AMT's hesitant low-speed response — typical trade-offs of its entry-level pricing rather than mechanical failures.
Its thin clear coat shows dealer-prep swirl on darker and metallic colours almost as soon as it leaves the showroom, so an AG1 front-bumper and headlight film is our standard recommendation even on a budget-first car like this.
It is reliable for what it is — a basic, inexpensive runabout with a wide service network — but its 1-star Global NCAP rating and strained performance with a full load mean we'd point a safety-conscious or highway-heavy buyer towards the Kiger or a Tata Punch instead.
The Kwid counters both with more ground clearance and a bigger-feeling cabin, the Alto K10 is the cheaper, simpler choice with Maruti's wider service reach, and the Tata Tiago beats both on crash-test rating with its 4-star Global NCAP result.
Resale value is middling — owners typically have a harder time matching Maruti Alto K10 or WagonR resale prices because Maruti's used-car trust and network reach remain stronger in the entry-hatchback segment, though the Kwid's low running costs partly offset this over an ownership cycle.
No. The Kwid is still on sale in India — Renault relaunched it in July 2026 with a new brand identity and a simplified two-trim Evolution/Climber line-up, and it remains Renault India's entry-level hatchback.
Autocar India's EMI calculator quotes the Climber 1.0 AMT, on-road priced around ₹6.09 lakh in Delhi, at roughly ₹8,849 a month; the Evolution MT starts noticeably lower. Exact EMI depends on the loan tenure, interest rate and down payment a dealer or bank offers.
Indicatively ₹5.29 lakh–₹6.68 lakh on-road in Hyderabad: ex-showroom ₹4.53 lakh–₹5.61 lakh (Delhi, 1 Nov 2026) plus Telangana life tax (13%), first-year insurance and registration. Dealer quotes vary with insurance add-ons and accessories.
Renault's claimed figures: 1.0L SCe petrol — 22.3 kmpl (Easy-R AMT, CarDekho spec listing). Real-world figures depend on traffic, load and driving style.
The top variant is the Climber 1.0 Easy-R AMT (Petrol, 5-speed AMT) at ₹5.61 lakh ex-showroom Delhi; the base model is the Evolution 1.0 MT (Petrol, 5-speed MT) at ₹4.53 lakh. 4 variants in all, as of 1 Nov 2026.
Ground clearance 184 mm, boot space 279 litres, 5 seats, length 3731 mm (Renault official specification).
