The Auto Grid Review

MG Comet EV Review: Our Verdict

3.5/ 5 · Auto Grid Editorial

The Comet EV is the smallest thing we see on the Kondapur ramp, and it comes in almost always for a single purpose — parking-lot and valet protection, because that is exactly how its owners use it. Its tiny overhangs and the narrow 145-section tyres mean low-speed scrapes concentrate on the front and rear bumper corners and the lower door edges, exactly where Hyderabad's basement parking pillars and speed-breakers bite. The flat, simple panels make it one of the quickest cars we film, and because most buyers treat it as a second city car rather than a showpiece, they ask for sensible, budget coverage rather than the full-body job a Windsor or Hector owner wants. We have not seen a Comet EV in for paint correction yet — the cars are too new and too gently used for that — but the bumper corners already show the first chips by six months.

What we like

  • +Tightest turning circle (4.2 m) of any new car sold in India — true city-parking ease
  • +Low running cost and MG's BaaS option lowers the upfront price further
  • +Floating twin-display cabin feels modern for the segment
  • +Easiest car in our bay to wrap end-to-end

What we’d change

  • –230 km claimed range is strictly a city-only number once AC and traffic are factored in
  • –No Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP result published for the Comet EV
  • –4-seat layout and tiny boot rule out anything but solo or two-up city use
  • –Base Executive trim skips rear disc brakes and the electronic parking brake

Is the Comet EV right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored

Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.

City Commuter

10–30 km a day through traffic

Built for exactly this — the 4.2 m turning circle and narrow footprint make it the easiest car in India to park and thread through Hyderabad's old-city lanes.

Highway Cruiser

ORR laps and expressway weekends

42 PS and a tiny wheelbase are not meant for the ORR; this is strictly an inside-the-city car.

Family First

Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips

Four seats, no boot to speak of and no published crash-test result make this a poor family choice beyond a single-parent school run.

Driving Enthusiast

Cares how it steers, not just how it looks

There's no driving engagement on offer here — it's an appliance, and MG never pretended otherwise.

First-Car Buyer

Budget-conscious and resale-aware

A genuinely cheap way into EV ownership with low running costs, though resale data is still thin this early in the model's life.

Chauffeur-Driven Executive

Judged from the rear seat

Not a car anyone is chauffeur-driven in; it's a tiny self-drive city runabout, nothing close to an executive brief.

Weekend Explorer

Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads

No ground clearance figure is even published — this stays within city limits by design.

Paint Protection

PPF for the MG Comet EV: What We Install and Why

Where it takes damage

The short overhangs and narrow tyres mean low-speed scrapes land on the front and rear bumper corners and the lower door edges — exactly where basement parking pillars and speed breakers make contact in city use.

Our recommendation

AG1 bumper-corner and sill-strip film covers the Comet EV's real-world damage pattern without over-spending on a car bought for low running cost.

Coverage

Front and rear bumper corners plus door sills as standard; full-front film only for owners who also use it for longer, unpredictable routes.

FAQs

MG Comet EV: Questions Buyers Ask

MG prices the Comet EV from ₹7,89,800 (Executive) to ₹10,16,800 (Exclusive FC) ex-showroom, as per MG Motor India's own price page checked on 1 November 2026. A Battery-as-a-Service option starts at ₹4.99 lakh plus ₹3.3 per km.

MG claims 230 km on the MIDC test cycle from its 17.4 kWh battery. Expect noticeably less in real Hyderabad traffic with the AC running, so treat it as a true city-only EV rather than a highway car.

No Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP result has been published for the Comet EV as of this writing. It carries a high-strength body with 17 hot-stamped panels per MG, but there is no independent star rating to cite.

The Comet EV is a smaller, 4-seat city-only micro EV best suited to parking-starved metros; the Tiago EV is a proper 5-seat hatchback with a bigger boot and longer real-world range, and is the better pick if you need a usable family-size EV rather than a second city car.

Yes. It uses a single-speed automatic transmission, as all electric motors do — there is no manual option.

Its short overhangs take the first scrapes from basement pillars and speed breakers, so our standard recommendation is bumper-corner and sill film rather than a full-body job most Comet EV buyers don't need.

Indicatively ₹8.15 lakh–₹10.63 lakh on-road in Hyderabad: ex-showroom ₹7.90 lakh–₹10.17 lakh (Delhi, 1 Nov 2026) plus Telangana life tax (0% (EV exemption)), first-year insurance and registration. EVs pay no road tax or registration fee in Telangana until 31 December 2026. Dealer quotes vary with insurance add-ons and accessories.

The top variant is the Exclusive FC (Electric, Automatic) at ₹10.17 lakh ex-showroom Delhi; the base model is the Executive (Electric, Automatic) at ₹7.90 lakh. 5 variants in all, as of 1 Nov 2026.

Comet EV: Micro electric hatchback, ₹7.90 lakh – ₹10.17 lakh ex-showroom, Electric, Auto Grid rating 3.5/5. Carens Clavis EV: Electric 3-row MPV, ₹18.04 lakh – ₹25.00 lakh ex-showroom, Electric, rated 4.1/5. See the Kia Carens Clavis EV page for its full variant list and our verdict.

Comet EV: Micro electric hatchback, ₹7.90 lakh – ₹10.17 lakh ex-showroom, Electric, Auto Grid rating 3.5/5. Model Y: Full-size electric SUV, ₹50.89 lakh – ₹61.99 lakh ex-showroom, Electric, rated 4.1/5. See the Tesla Model Y page for its full variant list and our verdict.
