The Auto Grid Review
Kia Sonet Review: Our Verdict
The Sonet is the Kia we see most often from first-time SUV buyers in Kondapur, usually a GTX+ or X-Line DCT in Gravity Grey or Imperial Blue straight off the transporter. The bonnet and the chiselled wheel arches are the first things to chip on Hyderabad's ORR approach roads, and the crystal-cut alloys pick up kerb rash fast enough that owners ask us about wheel film in the same visit. The clear coat itself is average for the segment — not as soft as some rivals, but the tall, flat bonnet and steep A-pillars mean stone chips show up quickly on the darker shades. We see fewer Sonets with dealer-fit swirls than Tata products, but the turbo-petrol DCT cars come in wanting paint correction on the front bumper within the first few thousand kilometres of city use.
What we like
- +Widest engine choice in the segment — NA petrol, turbo-petrol and diesel, each with a manual and an automatic
- +ADAS Level 1 and a 360° camera on a sub-4m SUV
- +Strong diesel manual mileage (24.1 kmpl ARAI) for high-distance buyers
- +Kia's service network and resale have both improved since launch
What we’d change
- –India-spec Sonet has not been independently crash-tested; a dual-airbag export-spec version scored only 1-star at Global NCAP (not comparable to the 6-airbag India car)
- –Alloy wheels mark easily on Hyderabad's broken outer-ring roads
- –Turbo-petrol's real-world mileage falls well short of the ARAI figure in city traffic
- –Rear seat and boot are tight for a family of four with luggage
Is the Sonet right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
The turbo-petrol DCT or the plain petrol 5MT both suit Hyderabad traffic well, and the compact footprint and 360° camera make it easy to place in tight Kondapur lanes.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
The diesel has the legs for ORR runs, but cabin noise and a firm ride mean the Seltos or Syros feel more settled at 100 km/h plus.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Six airbags and ISOFIX are standard, but the rear bench and boot are genuinely compact-SUV sized — fine for two adults and a child, tight for more.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
The 1.0 turbo-petrol has decent mid-range punch, and the DCT shifts quickly, but the chassis is tuned for comfort, not cornering.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Easy to drive, cheap to insure relative to class, and the sheer number of powertrain choices lets a first-time buyer match the car exactly to their budget and running pattern.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Rear seat space and ride refinement are built for the owner-driver, not the back seat — look at the Seltos or Carens Clavis instead.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
Reasonable ground clearance for a compact SUV, but it's front-wheel drive only on road-biased tyres, so it's a highway and city tool rather than an off-roader.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Kia Sonet: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The tall, steep bonnet and the sharply chiselled front wheel arches take the first stone chips on ORR approach roads; the crystal-cut alloys rash easily on broken Hyderabad kerbs, and the front bumper on turbo-petrol DCT cars shows wear fastest in daily city use.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front film with wheel-arch and alloy-lip protection for daily commuters; add the bonnet-to-roof strip for highway-heavy diesel buyers who rack up ORR kilometres quickly.
Coverage
Full front as the standard Sonet package; add alloy and arch guards for anyone driving the outer ring road regularly.

FAQs
Kia Sonet: Questions Buyers Ask
Kia's own trim ladder lists the Sonet from ₹7,44,900 (HTE 1.2 petrol) to ₹13,88,900 (X-Line turbo-petrol DCT) ex-showroom, pan-India, as of 29 October 2026.
ARAI-certified figures run from 18.4 kmpl on the petrol variants to 24.1 kmpl on the 1.5-diesel manual — the widest mileage spread in its segment because Kia offers three distinct engines (Autocar India / Zigwheels).
The India-spec Sonet (6 airbags, ESC standard) has not been independently crash-tested by Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP. A dual-airbag, ESC-optional export version built in India for South Africa scored 1-star at Global NCAP in June 2026 — that result does not apply to the India-spec car, which carries more standard safety kit.
Dealer data from August 2026 put most variants at roughly a month; a 23 October 2026 report had Delhi at close to two months. Waits move with variant, colour and local stock, so check with two dealers before booking.
All four are strong sub-4m SUVs; the Sonet's edge is engine choice (three distinct engines with manual and automatic options). The Brezza and Venue lean on brand reliability and resale, while the Nexon has the stronger independently-tested crash rating. From what we see at the installer bay, pick the Sonet if you want a specific powertrain-and-gearbox combination; pick the Nexon if a confirmed 5-star crash rating matters most to you.
Yes, for buyers who value engine choice and features — it's one of the few sub-4m SUVs offered with a genuine turbo-petrol, a plain petrol and a diesel, each with manual and automatic options. Its main caveat is that the India-spec car hasn't been independently crash-tested, unlike class leaders such as the Nexon.
HTX gives you the turbo-petrol DCT, the 360° camera and ADAS Level 1 without the GTX+/X-Line premium; the HTK+(O) diesel manual is the pick for high-mileage buyers chasing the 24.1 kmpl ARAI figure.
Its bonnet and front wheel arches are the panels we repair most often after ORR driving, and the alloy wheels mark up fast on Hyderabad roads, so a full-front AG1 film with arch protection is our standard Sonet package. Message Auto Grid on WhatsApp for a plan matched to your trim.
Indicatively ₹8.74 lakh–₹17.01 lakh on-road in Hyderabad: ex-showroom ₹7.45 lakh–₹13.89 lakh (Delhi, 29 Oct 2026) plus Telangana life tax (14%), first-year insurance and registration. Dealer quotes vary with insurance add-ons and accessories.
The top variant is the X line (Petrol, 7-speed DCT) at ₹13.89 lakh ex-showroom Delhi; the base model is the HTE (Petrol, 5-speed MT) at ₹7.45 lakh. 8 variants in all, as of 29 Oct 2026.
Sonet: Sub-4m compact SUV, ₹7.45 lakh – ₹13.89 lakh ex-showroom, Petrol/Diesel, Auto Grid rating 4.0/5. Seltos: Midsize SUV, ₹11.25 lakh – ₹21.57 lakh ex-showroom, Petrol/Diesel, rated 4.4/5. See the Kia Seltos page for its full variant list and our verdict.
