The Auto Grid Review
Kia Carens Review: Our Verdict
The plain Carens is a smaller slice of our business now that the Clavis has taken over as Kia's main three-row MPV, but we still see a steady trickle of Premium(O) CNG units from small-fleet and large-family buyers who want the lower running cost. The flat doors and simple surfacing make it an easy car to film, and the chrome rear bumper garnish is the one trim piece that needs extra masking care during any correction work. Paint quality is unremarkable but consistent — we haven't seen the dealer-buff swirls that show up on some rivals, and the main wear point is stone chipping on the front bumper from Hyderabad's ORR approach roads.
What we like
- +Factory-fitted CNG option — no aftermarket kit, with the fuel-change switch as standard
- +Six airbags and a strong basic safety package at under ₹12.5 lakh
- +Practical 60:40 second-row and 50:50 third-row seating for genuine 7-seat use
- +Lower price than the Carens Clavis for buyers who don't need the newer styling and features
What we’d change
- –Only 3 stars for adult occupant protection at Global NCAP (2024 retest), with 5 stars for child occupant protection
- –Just two trims — far less choice than the Clavis or most rivals
- –No turbo-petrol, diesel-automatic or sunroof option any longer on this model
- –Interior tech and styling are now a clear generation behind the Clavis
Is the Carens right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
It's an easy, unintimidating car to drive around Kondapur, though the CNG variant's tank cuts into usable boot space.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
The 1.5 petrol is adequate but unremarkable on the ORR with a full load; there's no diesel or turbo option on this model anymore.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Six airbags and genuinely usable second- and third-row seating make it practical for a family, though its 3-star Global NCAP adult score trails the Clavis and newer rivals.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
There is nothing here for a driver who cares about how a car steers or accelerates — it's a pure practicality play.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Reasonable running costs, especially on CNG, but a first-time buyer on a budget is usually better served by a smaller hatchback or compact SUV.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Second- and third-row comfort is adequate rather than special; an executive buyer should look at the Carens Clavis or a dedicated SUV instead.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
It's a people-mover, not a weekend adventure vehicle — ground clearance and tyres are both road-biased.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Kia Carens: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The front bumper takes the first stone chips on ORR approach roads, and the chrome rear bumper garnish needs careful masking during any correction work; the CNG variant's extra weight over the rear axle shows up as slightly faster rear tyre and arch wear.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front film for daily city and highway use; add rear-bumper protection for CNG variants doing regular highway distance.
Coverage
Full front as the standard Carens package; add rear-bumper and arch protection for CNG highway users.

FAQs
Kia Carens: Questions Buyers Ask
Kia's showroom page lists the Carens from ₹11,11,900 (Premium (O) 7 petrol) to ₹12,11,900 (Premium (O) CNG) ex-showroom, as of 29 October 2026.
The Carens is Kia's older, value-priced three-row MPV now trimmed down to two variants (petrol and factory CNG); the Carens Clavis is the newer, larger line-up with turbo-petrol and diesel-automatic options, a sunroof and more features, priced from about ₹11.4 lakh up to roughly ₹21.8 lakh.
The Carens scored 3 stars for adult occupant protection and 5 stars for child occupant protection at Global NCAP after a 2024 retest (it initially scored zero stars for adults before Kia improved the restraint system); it has 6 airbags standard.
ARAI certifies the 1.5-litre petrol at 15.7 kmpl; Kia does not publish a separate ARAI figure for the factory CNG variant on its own specification pages.
The Ertiga has Maruti's wider service network and a strong CNG and mild-hybrid reputation; the Carens counters with a roomier cabin and a stronger standard safety package (6 airbags, ESC, hill-assist). For pure running cost and resale, the Ertiga edges it; for cabin space and kit, the Carens does.
Its front bumper takes the most stone-chip damage on highway approach roads, so a full-front AG1 film is our standard Carens package. Message Auto Grid on WhatsApp for a plan matched to your variant.
