The Auto Grid Review
Kia Carens Clavis Review: Our Verdict
The Clavis has become our most common three-row MPV booking out of Kondapur, usually an HTX or HTX+ DCT petrol in Gravity Gray. The dual-pane sunroof surround and the chrome digital-pattern grille both need careful masking during correction work, and the front bumper and lower doors take the expected ORR stone-chip and splash damage on family trips. We haven't yet seen independent crash-test data on this generation — Kia hasn't sent the Clavis to Bharat NCAP as of this run — so we tell owners plainly that its safety case rests on the six-airbag standard kit and the unchanged structure under the old Carens' retested 3-star adult score, not a confirmed new rating.
What we like
- +Widest powertrain and trim choice in Kia's MPV range — petrol, turbo-petrol, diesel and CNG
- +ADAS Level 2 with 20 features on the HTX+ and GTX+ trims
- +Genuinely practical 6- or 7-seat layouts with captain-seat option
- +Diesel manual's 19.54 kmpl ARAI figure is strong for a three-row MPV
What we’d change
- –Not yet independently crash-tested by Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP as of this run
- –No diesel automatic on the top HTX+ trim
- –Rear captain seats lack ventilation even on top trims
- –Pricing at the GTX+ top end overlaps with three-row SUVs like the Safari and Alcazar
Is the Carens Clavis right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
The turbo-petrol DCT is easy and relaxed in Kondapur traffic, though the Clavis' length makes it a bigger car to park than a compact SUV.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
The diesel automatic and the turbo-petrol DCT both settle well on ORR and highway runs with a full load.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
Six airbags, genuinely flexible 6/7-seat layouts and a strong equipment list make it one of the more practical family MPVs we see, pending an independent crash-test score for this generation.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
It's a family-first MPV; the turbo-petrol has decent punch but the car isn't tuned for driving enjoyment.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
It's a capable car but priced and sized well above what most first-time buyers are looking for.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Captain seats, a quiet cabin on the diesel automatic and strong equipment make the HTX+ trim work well for chauffeur-driven use.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
Reasonable space for luggage and people on a family road trip, though it remains front-wheel drive only on road-biased tyres.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Kia Carens Clavis: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The front bumper and lower doors take the expected ORR stone-chip and splash damage on family road trips, and the dual-pane sunroof surround and digital-pattern grille both need careful masking during any correction work.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front film with lower-door protection for family highway use; add sunroof-surround masking care for correction jobs on HTX+ and GTX+ cars.
Coverage
Full front as standard; add lower-door and rear-bumper protection for highway-heavy family use.

FAQs
Kia Carens Clavis: Questions Buyers Ask
Kia's trim ladder runs from ₹11,20,900 (HTE petrol) to ₹21,78,900 (GTX+ 7 turbo-petrol DCT) ex-showroom, as of 29 October 2026; Autocar India reported Kia running benefits of up to ₹95,000 on ICE variants that same month.
Not as of this run. The Clavis shares its platform with the Carens, which scored 3 stars for adult occupant protection at Global NCAP after a 2024 retest; multiple outlets (The Car Jury, ZigWheels, Team-BHP) confirm the Clavis itself had not been sent for Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP testing as of mid-to-late 2026.
ARAI figures are roughly 15.95 kmpl for the plain petrol manual, 16.66 kmpl for the automatic petrol, 19.54 kmpl for the diesel manual and 17.5 kmpl for the diesel automatic.
The Clavis is the newer, larger MPV with a turbo-petrol engine, ADAS Level 2, a sunroof and a wider trim spread; the Carens is the older, cheaper two-trim model Kia still sells alongside it.
The Innova Crysta has decades of diesel-MPV reputation and the strongest resale value in the segment; the Clavis counters with a turbo-petrol option, ADAS Level 2, a sunroof and a noticeably more modern cabin at a lower starting price. Choose the Crysta for proven long-term reliability, the Clavis for features and value.
It comes with 6 airbags, ESC and ADAS Level 2 on the top trims as standard, but as of this run Kia had not sent the Clavis itself for Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP testing — the platform it shares with the Carens scored only 3 stars for adult protection at Global NCAP. Treat the safety kit as strong on paper until an independent crash-test score for this exact car is published.
HTK+ diesel automatic is the value sweet spot with the sunroof and alloy wheels; step up to HTX+ or GTX+ if you want ADAS Level 2 and the turbo-petrol DCT.
The front bumper and lower doors take the most stone-chip and splash damage on family highway trips, so a full-front AG1 film with lower-door protection is our standard Clavis package. Message Auto Grid on WhatsApp for a plan matched to your trim.
Indicatively ₹13.46 lakh–₹27.08 lakh on-road in Hyderabad: ex-showroom ₹11.21 lakh–₹21.79 lakh (Delhi, 29 Oct 2026) plus Telangana life tax (17%–18%), first-year insurance and registration. Dealer quotes vary with insurance add-ons and accessories.
The top variant is the GTX+ 7 (Petrol, 7-speed DCT) at ₹21.79 lakh ex-showroom Delhi; the base model is the HTE (Petrol, 6-speed MT) at ₹11.21 lakh. 12 variants in all, as of 29 Oct 2026.
Carens Clavis: 3-row MPV, ₹11.21 lakh – ₹21.79 lakh ex-showroom, Petrol/Diesel/CNG, Auto Grid rating 4.0/5. XL6: Six-seat premium MPV, ₹11.62 lakh – ₹14.68 lakh ex-showroom, Petrol/CNG, rated 3.9/5. See the Maruti Suzuki XL6 page for its full variant list and our verdict.
