How to Judge a PPF Shop Near You: 7 Checks
“Near me” finds you the closest shop, not the right one. Film is only half of a PPF job; the other half is the bay, the templates and the hands. These are the seven things we would check before handing over our own car, and they apply to us as much as to anyone else.
Ask who certifies the installer
Every major film brand runs an installer programme. A shop that is certified by the brand it sells can register your warranty with that brand. A shop that cannot name its certification is usually buying film through a trader, and the warranty then rests on the shop alone.
Look at the bay, not the showroom
PPF goes on in a closed, dust-controlled bay with filtered lighting. If the installation area is open to the road, dust gets trapped under the film and shows up as specks and lifted edges within weeks. Ask to see where the car will actually be worked on.
Computer-plotted templates, not freehand cutting
Good installers cut film on a plotter using a template for your exact model, then fit it. Freehand cutting on the car risks blade marks in the clear coat. Ask whether they have a template for your model and what they do for panels the template does not cover.
Check the film is genuine
Branded PPF rolls carry batch codes, and XPEL, STEK and 3M all let you verify a roll. Unbranded "imported" film is where most peeling and yellowing complaints come from. Ask to see the roll and the box before work starts.
Get the warranty in writing, from the brand
The warranty you want is the manufacturer warranty, registered in your name, covering yellowing, cracking, peeling and delamination. A verbal "lifetime warranty" from a shop is not the same thing.
Ask how edges and corners are handled
Wrapped edges on the bonnet and bumper last longer than film cut at the panel edge. Ask whether edges are wrapped, how mirror caps and sensors are treated, and whether the car is inspected with you before it leaves.
Judge the answer to "which brand should I take?"
A shop that only sells one film will recommend that film. One that installs several should be able to say which brand fits your car, your colour and how long you plan to keep it, and why. We install seven films and will tell you which one we would not put on your car.
